The Cavalry CAUM external hard drive gives you an extra terabyte of elbow room for your archives, photo library, or digital movie collection at an incredible price! With its Hi-speed USB 2.0 interface, you get Plug & Play compatibility with your Windows computer.
This is an elegant yet practical solution to your data protection needs. Easily copy all your important files for peace of mind. Family photos, critical business documents, and your entire collection of music and videos can all be protected.
CAUM's aluminum chassis gives you cool, near-silent performance, and unbeatable durability. Stand the unit on edge with the included rack to conserve desk space, or lay it flat for stackable convenience. When you need extra storage capacity in a small space, at an even smaller price, the CAUM external hard drive is the perfect solution!
Pros: Small and sturdy design, the USB cable is standard, and the power supply "brick" is smaller than a laptop supply, but larger than it looks in the photograph. Having it formatted NTFS is handy since many of the files that one would intend to store on such a large drive will be larger than fat32 would allow. (ie: backup archive files) The blue LED front panel is kinda neat looking, it seems possible that you could pop that end off and make a bezel with a custom logo or name that would illuminate when the drive is in operation. (have not done that since the kid gets this one.) It was quickly delivered and well packed. The included stand is not necessary since the unit stands quite firmly on it's edge without it, being hewn from heavy metal and one side is flat. They were thinking a little when they designed this one.
Cons: It is heavier than expected, however probably due to the metallic enclosure. It uses a power supply that has 4-conductor cable (dual voltage) which makes it impossible to find a replacement power supply if it should go out. The power connector is also unlike anything commonly available, again would be difficult to repair if a child tripped over the cord and damaged it. It did seem to have an intermittant usb jack in the rear, but after close examination it was because of the manufacturing process that did not fully clean the PCB wash from the terminals, and it had oxidized slightly. So if this happens, just plug & unplug about 50 times and it will clear it up if you do not have the micro tools to brighten it up. Did notice that it took a while to initiate the first time on each computer it was attached to, I did not care to investigate since it worked perfectly afterwards, but it probably was fault of XP and the surprisingly large size causing Bill's XP software to go loony for a sec.
Other Thoughts: Overall the best bargain for such a device I can find (at this time), and a great way to send your kid to another country loaded up with all the data (movies of course) that he would be bored without. Just be sure to include the full "backup archive" data to restore his computer when he (or his roomie) gets a virus from downloading the "donky-show" from Kazaa or Limewire.

This item is a steal.

Pros: Took a risk on this one, purchasing the lowest cost 1TB external drive on newegg. This unit stays quite cool without the aid of an internal fan, is a clean looking piece of hardware and the biggest surprise, it has a good hard drive inside. I was pleasantly suprised to discover a Western Digital HDD inside insteal of some cheap knockoff drive. I've never had a problem with a WD HDD.
Cons: Backlit logo is a touch on the bright side. Power cord is waaayyyy to short.
Other Thoughts: Great bargain.

Tech Level: average - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I bought this back in May 2009 when my laptop started acting like it was about to die. (It eventually did earlier this month.) I just use it to back up my data, using a freebie backup program I downloaded. So far have not had any problems with the drive.
I like having the power switch, and I like the pretty blue light in front that tells me if it's on or off. I typically keep it off when I'm not performing a backup, but one time it got left on a couple days. It wasn't hot at all. It also runs quietly.
Cons: I can't use it to backup my old Windows 98 computer, since the external drive is formatted with NTFS instead of FAT/FAT32. At least that's what I learned after hours of trying to get my old computer to recognize/read it.
Other Thoughts: It comes with a plastic stand, but I find it stands upright just fine without it.

Great Drive, going strong for almost a year so far

Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I bought this drive on 2/17/2009 and it has done it's job well since then. Never had any issues at all. I now have it filled to capacity and am in need of another.
Cons: 16MB cache is a bit weak for a 1TB but you really wont find much better for the price (only a few this price hit 32MB).
Other Thoughts: I have had it running for close to a month without turning it off and it can get warm but nothing it can't handle. The power switch is a plus because I HATE having to unplug each time I want to turn my external off.
