4 out of 5 eggsGood for what it is

Pros: compact size, easy to setup, versatile

Cons: not a speed demon

Other Thoughts: While the data transfer speeds are not screaming, this little box does exactly what its supposed to do. I installed 4 500G Western Digital drives, told it to config as Raid 5 and let it do its thing. Sure the RAID build is slow but its a one-time setup so who cares? It has enough speed to stream DVDs, mp3, and has been no trouble so far. I set up secure directories for each family member, loaded up my music and other files and its been doing its thing for about 4 months now.

4 out of 5 eggsNice system

Pros: Easy to setup, pop drives in and software finds device quickly. Security is very nice. If you're having problem with disconnected shares, use static IP (check the thecus forums!).

Cons: Yes appliance isn't lightning fast. I wanted it for data backup with redundancy incase a drive fails. I'm only using RAID 1 for now (raid 5 maybe next paycheck!). The backup software is a limited trial application. I liked the smtp pages incase of failure, but it also notifies me when the unit does scheduled power save. Bittorrent is a module you install; while the module works well, only admin user can run it. It creates some generic folders "music" "photos" and such - while these folders are nice, you can hide them but you can't delete them. Audio playback gets choppy maybe 10 seconds every other hour but it's not bad.

Other Thoughts: Again, I wanted the unit for data backup so if my PC dies, the data is safe.

2 out of 5 eggsN 4100+

Pros: Lots of security, compatable with lots of different networks (linux, AD, Novell ect...). Compatible with any size Serial ATA. Nice web interface.

Cons: The Lan port and the Wan ports have to be on different subnets. I found this very annoying. Maybe I wanted to use both nics internally. Once configured, I created a map drive to the nas and tried to pass a file and got an error "Drive as become disconnected". I couldnt fix this issue and has to send the unit back to newegg which tried to charge me a restocking fee ($68.00). I called and complained and got my money back. Thanks newegg!!

Other Thoughts: This is a litte box that tries to be to much. I just wanted some storage space on my network to put my media files that was fast enough to stream video.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Slow

Pros: Quiet

Cons: Very slow read/write operations on a gigabit network. Was unable to maintain multiple read/write operations at the same time.
