Bring the power and security of a RAID 5 back-up server home with the N4100PRO from Thecus. It can handle up to 4 SATA drives in its lockable hot swap bays. The Auto Rebuild and Hot Spare functions combine to keep your data secure even if a drive goes down. You can add drives to the USB 2.0 ports for added capacity.
In addition to RAID 5 the N4100PRO supports RAID levels 0, 1, 6, and 10 as well as JBOD, giving you plenty of options. RAID level migration and expansion let you add capacity and adjust your storage scheme as needed without having to add another enclosure and transfer the data.
The journaling file system keeps your backups current. Support for Microsoft, Mac and Linux protocols makes this a great choice for a multiplatform environment. It also supports FTP and HTTP/s for web based transfers.

Fantastic Little Box
- Pros: This is one of the fastest NAS boxes available, particularly at this price point. Performance compares to boxes two to three times its price. Nothing else comes close today.
It took me five minutes to get the box running, and then a few hours to format the RAID. The setup is easy enough that I would think the average PC amateur would have no troubles at all.
The 2 gigabit network links are great -- one can be a server, and the other a client.
The hot swap works perfectly -- it reported bad sectors on a Seagate drive, in went a new one, and it was back to healthy in a couple of hours. I also tested the RAID 1 to RAID 5 migration, and it did well. I am currently running RAID 6, because the reliability is better than RAID 5, and the speed is nearly as good.
The box has had no trouble with either Seagate or WD 1.5 tb drives, if it matters, and I am currently running a mix of both -- probably not optimal, but this box couldn't care less.
- Cons: The web-based interface is TOO simple... I would like to have easier access to the base filesystem.
Also, the manual is pretty basic. You don't need much manual, though, because access is meant to be kept very limited.
- Other Thoughts: For less than 1K, you can run 4x1.5 TB drives in a RAID 6 array. And, this isn't some clunker external storage, either...
If you want to set up 4 1.5 TB drives, expect to be without a box for a day. It literally takes over 24 hours to build an array that size.
Good performance to price ratio
- Pros: Very small footprint (especially for having 4 bays), construction feels very sound, operating temps and fan speeds both reasonably low, RAID 5 speed is very good for the price point, ~20Mb/sec upload, ~45 Mb/sec download over gigabit with 1500 byte frames.
- Cons: Documentation is somewhat spotty and difficult to understand because of sometimes-poor translations. Can't help but feel write times would be helped enormously with a more powerful processor and more RAM
- Other Thoughts: Great NAS for home use that requires a bit more expertise and planning than some of it's competitors.

Eggcellent NAS
- Pros: I build and repair computer for a living so my expertise is real and not self serving fantasy.
This Thecus NAS (as well as the 5200) are very well built and superior to NAS products made by other companies. Some parts of the manual not only assume a very high level of knowledge of advanced networking but fortunately you can skip the advanced setup as long as you understand the basic stuff. Be careful which of the two ethernet ports you connect to your LAN. Workmanship and attention to detail are very high. Fan is quiet and non obtrusive. Overall the NAS works really well and unlike Buffalo, thecus clearly explains how to upgrade the unit with larger HD's as well as how to recover from an HD failure. Raid5 capacity is n-1, and Raid10 is n-2 (where n is the capacity of a single drive). Raid10 advantage is faster performance, initial Raid build, and recovery time with a trade off for capacity. Use RAID5 or RAID10 for the highest reliability and speed.
- Cons: Manual has no explanations of some of advanced features
- Other Thoughts: Works great with some of the 5200 rpm green drives (Samsung 1Tb Ecogreen F2)

Very nice
- Pros: Super easy setup, nice (scheduled) power management features, management provided many configuration options but it was not overwhelming. Highly recommended for someone needing large amounts of storage in a small form-factor!
- Cons: Really there were not any cons. I didn't think formatting took an unreasonable amount of time. Copying large amounts of data to the device took awhile. I used a 1Gb crossover link to attain maximum throughput and it only copied at about 12% utilization even using jumbo packets. I wasn't able to try multiple computers/configurations to try and speed it up. Not really a con, because other NAS devices I've tried seem to be about the same.
- Other Thoughts: Filled the unit with 1TB drives RAID 5 - no issues. I set this up for a friend whom wasn't very familiar with this type of technology, but they are running just fine and understood the options in the management interface that I explained. Be sure and use group permissions if you use local authentication, otherwise the unit takes awhile to update permissions when you change them. (if you have alot of files on the unit, which we did) I personally am waiting to get the 5200 because I could use some of the additional features, but this box was really solid from my experience.
