Great unit
- Pros: Solid construction. Easy to mount the drives and get the unit connected.
I got this unit so that I could have a raid 5 back up solution for all of my digital pictures and provide an easy central location for my wife to access the pictures.
It is working just like I wanted and I'm very happy with this.
- Cons: The instructions are very limited, but not really a con if you are tech savvy.
- Other Thoughts: It did take a long time to build the raid 5 array across 3 1TB drives, but well worth it.
Poor shipping and plenty of problems
- Pros: 1. Raid 5 with three drives
2. Well constructed case
3. Compact size
4. Drives were quick and easily installed
- Cons: 1. I've been unable to consistently boot the unit up.Sometimes it hangs during startup and I must hold down the power up button or pull the plug. I contacted Thecus support and they recommend returning the unit.
4. The LCD often reports incorrect information on the drive status. The amount of up-time is sometimes missing. Ditto for the date and time, and current firmware version
3. It's NOISY!!! There is nearly constant drive activity. The 3 drive lights are on and drives appear to be constantly working. I can't have this in the same room with me.
4. I have a gigabit network, but can't use jumbo frames.
- Other Thoughts: While there wasn't any physical damage to the unit when I opened the box, I suspect the startup problems are related to something that happened to the NAS in shipping. It was shipped in the OEM box and not double boxed. I also don't know if the noise is normal. The version of the unit is V1, and the Thecus support person asked me to upgrade the firmware from 1.00.02 to 03a. That didn't help any of the problems. I am disappointed and returning the NAS!
Easy No Fuss
- Pros: Plug and Play, solid build, stays cool, fits right in. This is one nice looking NAS. Integrates with my PS3 perfect.
- Cons: Instructions are not the best, clinical. Would like to see real word examples for setting up iTunes, FTP, etc.
- Other Thoughts: I've had this setup as RAID 1 with 2 1-terebyte WD drives and it was flawless. I recently purchased another for RAID 5 and is failed after building and I copied the first files to it. The drive must be bad and I'm sending it back. Does make me nervious and I may stay with RAID 1.
