Everyone knows the N4200PRO, one of the first Atom D525 based NAS. Thecus is now announcing its proud successor, the N4800, which features dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and 4x internal SATA connectors. This time, the N4800 will be one of the first Intel Atom D2700 based NAS! Gathering what’s been best for the N4200 series (small summary), the N4800 also has its own fair share of new technologies with no less than 2GB of DDR3 RAM. This very powerful NAS will become a must-have for all small and medium businesses in need of centralized storage, application serving, and top-notch response time within multi-user environments. For the more demanding users, the N4800 will also have its use at home.

USB 3.0: from optional to mandatory

Thecus was the first to launch a NAS compatible with USB 3.0 for early adopters. Now that the technology has matured and more USB 3.0 devices exist on the market, it is time to embed it by default! The N4800 has two USB 3.0 ports, which are up to10 times faster than USB 2.0.

3rd generation Intel Atom CPU: silent power

New Intel Atom D2700 CPU is designed to work without fans. This will dramatically reduce noise and power consumption of the NAS.

Associated with 2GB of DDR3, the new Atom will provide much better performance. Reaching the limits of Gigabit bandwidth on a “small NAS” is already a standard in the industry, thanks to the N4200PRO. But what if you (and you will) want your NAS to give you more? Multi-user environment, web hosting, intense backup, data encryption, application serving, heavy RAID computations, and HD multimedia streaming: welcome to the world of smooth multi-tasking!

HDMI output: removing the middle man

After installing the proper module, just plug in a screen through the HDMI output, a mouse and keyboard on USB ports and the NAS is good to go. You don’t even need computer to check on your NAS! With HDMI output, users can watch videos or browse the Internet directly from their NAS to a monitor. (*will be available with a FW update by end of June.)

Ideal for small installations and/or mobile users, this feature is designed to lower the total cost of ownership of its user’s network architecture.

  • newegg Mini-UPS With the N4800's built-in Mini-UPS, not even a power outage can slow you down. The Mini-UPS provides power to allow the N4800 to write unwritten data to the hard disks and safely shutdown, ensuring the integrity of your data and preserving your memories.
  • newegg Dual Display Wondering how your NAS is doing? Just check out the LCD display on the N4800 for convenient status information including HDD activity, LAN activity and USB Copy status. The sharp OLED display even allows you to change various system settings without having to be near a computer.
  • newegg Multiple RAID When it comes to data management, Thecus NAS truly lets you have it your way. Create multiple RAID volumes each supporting different RAID modes including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD for your own balance of performance and data protection. Should a hard drive malfunction occur, changing one is simple thanks to online RAID migration and expansion, hot spare, and auto rebuild.
  • newegg iSCSI Thin-Provisioning Get the most out of your storage space with the extreme speed of iSCSI and the efficiency of iSCSI thin provisioning. Connect through iSCSI for the fastest data transfer speeds available and make wasted disk space a thing of the past with thin provisioning's flexible storage functionality.
  • newegg iOS/Android Connectivity In the modern world, nothing is as important as reaching your data from anywhere. With ThecusShare and the Thecus Dashboard, you can manage your NAS, and upload to and download/stream from your NAS using an iOS or Android device on the go.
  • newegg User Quotas Divide the massive storage of a Thecus NAS among multiple users. Whether there are two users or 100, user quotas make it easy to divvy up and manage disk space.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS Storage

Pros: Excellent range of storage RAID storage options
Wide range of tested and usable hard drives in consumer lines
Numerous storage applications
Expandable server potential with modular application deployment
Ability to connect a mouse and keyboard to control the NAS directly

Cons: Most help is in broken English at best and requires interpretation
Certain features within the web
Twonky media server fails at startup; requires extensive manipulation to get functioning
Media server does not have the range of other more robust media streaming solutions

Other Thoughts: This NAS server, for the cost, is extremely robust and handles a wide range of hard drives as well as robust network connectivity, remote management and remote access. It's well worth the money if a four drive NAS system is in your budget and what you're looking for. Despite the failures of some of the software, I highly recommend this unit.
