4 out of 5 eggsTS-209 Pro II, keep it up

Pros: TS-209 Pro II is a good machine, it was easy to handle, it took only the time required for the firmware and software to be installed.

Cons: I hated the part where you have to intialize the harddrive and you lose all your data. The fan noise need to be improved. and it is a bit pricy. and for teh above reasons I gave it one star less.

Other Thoughts: I bought this mainly to stream HD (.mkv) movies and bittorrent client. And it is doing a good job at both of them.
there are couple of small glitches in the upnp server software but nothing of a big deal. over all it is working as I expect it.

1 out of 5 eggsQNAP and Squeezecenter??

Pros: Quiet, easy RAID1 configuration.

Cons: I bought this NAS to store my music (FLAC), video, and pictures, and to stream the music to my stereo via the Squeezebox Duet using Squeezecenter. QNAP claims that you can install Squeezecenter and provides a guide, but the steps do not work, as the plug-in is not recognized by the server.
I opened a ticket with the QNAP helpdesk, but two months later no response...
If you check other forums and blogs you realize this is a known issue, and that QNAP and Logitech's Squeezecenter is a troublesome mix that I have not been able to get to work.
Therefore, my NAS is just a back-up unit, and I seriously consider buying another NAS that will allow me to stream music...

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Raid Array

Pros: Contrary to other posters, QNAP is QUIET, but it does depend in the drive. I choose Samsung model from newegg, low power (good for power savings $$$) and low noise.

Simply the best NAS disk array on the market, period. I looked for years for the best NAS, and finally QNAP delivered a near perfect NAS. If the price was 1/2 the current cost (400) the competition would be crushed. Instead of listing all the features, just look at QNAP's home page, it does a great job of explaining them.

I have't tried yet, but I plan to link two of them to provide redundant backup between two locations. Uses standard Linux Rsync, so it should work.

Cons: The Price, and it is a little big, but it can't get much smaler housing two 5 1/4" drives. In a few years, I'm sure they will put out 2.5" drive version, once hard drives in 2.5" get to 1tb+ range.

3 out of 5 eggsFull Featured, but LOUD. Read on for fix.

Pros: Lots of functionality - web server, itunes server, lots of supported protocols including Appletalk, nfs, smb, ftp. Drives are hot swap (RAID-1). Very simple to use web interface. Overall well built. Lost points due to noise and the fact that I needed to mod the device for it to be usable.

Cons: LOUD due to exceptionally low quality internal fan. Since the fan is an odd size, replacement options are limited. Less expensive options available if budget conscious.

Other Thoughts: The device was SO loud I couldn't keep it running in my office across from my bedroom. Replaced the 70mm (odd size) internal fan with a Nexus 70mm quiet fan and now I can't hear it. The Nexus barely fit into the spot where the original fan was, but loosened a couple screws and got it in there. Drives stay below 35 deg C with the new fan.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat box

Pros: Fast, quiet, stable, great file server for small offices of up to about 10 users. Doesn't require paying $3000 for a Windows 2003 server with 10 CALs. Doesn't require antivirus or antispyware software. Gigabit port, RAID 1.

Cons: Doesn't answer the phone.

Other Thoughts: When small businesses realize that they don't need M$, watch out. This is an awesome solution for a file server for small business.
