5 out of 5 eggsWorkhorse NAS

Pros: Impressive might be an understatement. I've been using the QNAP TS-259 Pro for several months now (purchased in April 2010) to store all my data files, and without a single problem or hiccup.

I was drawn to this QNAP NAS by the fast transfer rates, great software and low power consumption. Certainly no complaints in this department. My 259 Pro runs for weeks, if not months at a time without any attention whatsoever. The Hitachi drives spin down into sleep mode as expected, further saving power.

I am also impressed with the ease of managing users and folder permissions using the QNAP software. It is so much easier to establish a secure working network compared to the Windows platform. For me that feature alone is worth paying a little extra.

Regarding QNAP customer service, I found it excellent. During initial setup I had some minor trouble. I called QNAP customer service and they were able to connect remotely to my NAS and fix the issue.

Cons: My Hitachi drives are a little loud, and this NAS does not do much to shield the noise.

Other Thoughts: Yes, this line of NAS products costs more than the some others. For me the speed, hardware and software quality, power efficiency and reliability of the TS259-Pro are completely worth the premium.

5 out of 5 eggsMakes a Great File Server

Pros: Offloaded file server function for small user group (8 user) from another server that is needed for more CPU-intensive functions. Users report no change in response. Setup RAID 1 with a pair of Black Caviar 1Tb drives and user groups, etc. as easy as can be. As a simple test of access speed, we currently back up about 30 G from NAS. Backup program log (Corbian v9) indicates no change in backup time from previous arrangement, seemingly showing similar file transfer speed.

Cons: Could always use a little more info in help, but otherwise all is great so far.

5 out of 5 eggsNow Serving # 56

Pros: 2 core processor, 2 locking hot-swap drive bays, 2 eSATA, 2 Gbit network ports, print service, USB, VMware, iSCSI, Sleek interface, full-featured OS, works with Windows networking, Apple networking and Linux networking, VGA port for diagnostics, durable enclosure, compact form, etc. I probably missed something, so check out the manufacturers website, and hundreds of other reviews online.

Cons: I would have liked an all black enclosure. It doesn't make coffee. It has no way to go back in time to restore the files I lost which prompted me to buy it.

Other Thoughts: There are much cheaper NAS available for the casual user. I chose this NAS based on poor experience with other models. The CPU and build quality were the main reasons why I purchased this unit. The software equals the hardware in quality. I have this set up to serve files to wherever I travel via a cellular modem for my laptop. The second drive is to keep my first drive backed up. If you need are larger capacity, QNAP puts all of the same features in a family of NAS. I also keep a directory of ISO files which I mount to my netbook with daemontools Lite.
