3 out of 5 eggsGood for basic use

Pros: It is a great file server. Uses little power and when used with QnapCloud, it gives you access to your files anywhere you have an internet connection.

Cons: There is a great deal of apps that you can load on this thing. More than I would ever be interested in. Many of which I wouldn't recommend due to this thing's main con. Lack of power/RAM. This thing can't do real time transcoding of movies. Well technically it CAN, but it just doesn't have the horsepower to do it so you can watch a movie. Granted, I don't exactly have high performance drives in this - I opted for reliability/longevity. short clips work okay, but if you load up a feature length movie (not even HD quality) you will be lucky to get a couple of minutes of video before it stops to transcode enough to fill my smart TVs video buffer, then play that minute and a half of video before it stops to let the buffer fill again and so on.

Other Thoughts: I think others have said, this does have a learning curve to it as it is not that intuitive. There is also some annoying quirks to the way the folder system is setup. I don't know if this is just the way linux embedded is or just they way Qnap decided to code it, but I wish I could have the freedom to decide what folders are used for what and how. Overall I can't recommend that you use it for many of the large number of apps that are available, because it would not give you the performance that you need. But for a basic file server that gives you access on the go it would be hard to beat at this price.

4 out of 5 eggsGood device

Pros: The device is quiet and surprisingly feature packed. This really could replace the average home server. It allows for undvertised features like a DHCP server, Web Server, BitTorrent client and many many more. I was amazed.

Cons: Even though this is one of the faster processors available it still isn't really fast enough. I have two drives in the device in a striped RAID and the unit will max it's CPU at 100% while transfering at about 60 MB per second or about 500 mbps.

Other Thoughts: The inital install was a little bit troublesome. When I went to download firmware off of their site every time I downloaded the .zip file it came across corrupted. I tried several versions back. Eventually I gave up and provided it the file on the provided disk and it worked fine. then on first boot I got a message saying that there was newer firmware available and it successfully updated to the one that I was trying to download. Odd and frustrating, but it worked out okay.

I am giving 4 eggs becuase the inital config was a bit of heartache and the performance doesn't quite make it to the advertised speeds.

All in all, however, I would recommend this device.

1 out of 5 eggsbroken

Pros: Small package, quiet.

Cons: Doesn't work at all. The New Egg page for this product has a link to a web page that is supposed to list the hard drives that this product supports, but the link goes to a non-existing web page (Once I navigated through QNAP's web site I was able to find the page and ordered two drives from their approved list.) The Application that QNAP provides that is supposed to connect to the NAS device was not able to find it, even after multiple tries.
Tried again by changing my machine to the 169.254.100.* subnet, as suggested by QNAP, still nothing. Same attempt from a linux box, same results. The device will not make a connection on the address & port that the manufacturer specifies. To make it worse, it reboots itself every ten minutes or so (no idea why, since I can't connect to it). They have newer firmware available for download on their web site, but to utilities to upgrade the device to the new firmware. I'll keep the hard drives, since I can find a use for them. The QNAP box is going straight back to New Egg.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear value customer, I am sorry to here that. Can you please contact our Technicial Support at 909-595-2782 so we can take care of you. Our warranty policy is included 30 DOA Exchange.

5 out of 5 eggsQuite happy

Pros: Raid 1 (mirror) support
Connect to multiple Linux and Windows machines
Gigabit Ethernet port
Solid performance
Sturdy build
Low power
Quite (I have it a little distance away)

Cons: Can not physically lock the drives into the NAS.

Other Thoughts: I've had this NAS for 11 months now. It just works well. Using it for a file server, have not tried streaming media. Have 2 WD 500 GB Caviar Blue drives in a RAID 1 configuration.

5 out of 5 eggsFlexible and POWERFUL

Pros: -Full storage support with Raid so I don't lose my data when a drive fails
-Has a full suite for data management, back-up, and syncing capabilities across multiple computers
-Can be used as a web server, a printer server, a personal cloud server, and a iTunes airplay/DLNA server
-Completely flexible for security and network adaptation
-Use it as a webcam/security system hub and record video from around the house, and watch anywhere remotely
-Literally this list goes on an on. These were the ones I found most impressive.

-The biggest PRO for the system is it's active development by QNAP. They released a firmware update recently that allows the server to act as an airplay server for my appleTV. I now can access my ENTIRE library without having to turn on the computer and run iTunes. I did some research with the other companies for NAS'es, and QNAP doesn't disappoint. They even have mobile applications to access and use it remotely.

Cons: There is a learning curve to these, and it takes more than four hours to figure it out. Once I figured out how to map the network drives, I had my little breakthrough, but it took a few hours to accomplish.
-The fan is loud. I put mine in a spot where that doesn't really matter (garage) but may affect some people
-The web UI is very un-intuitive, and takes a while to learn. Patience and a good beer is necessary when setting this up!
-the power brick isn't internal, and it's huge. no chance hiding it anywhere...

Other Thoughts: I originally purchased this so I could access my data from two computers in the house and allow my main computer to go completely silent, as the HDD's were the only things making noise in the computer.

Now I have it set-up so my appleTV can access directly without iTunes running, I have the ability to sync my music to my phone from anywhere in the world with no 5GB storage data limit, and I have it all set-up so when I plug my external esata hard drive to the back it automatically backs everything up, and I don't have to touch a button.

If you only give this thing 4 hours to set-up, you're going to RMA it because it has a learning curve. For me I was having the hardest time determining the right ip address for my network, when in reality it was DHCP and didn't require any static address, so I just set it to what the router gave it internally in my network, and it works flawlessly.

But now that I've had it for a while, I would never go back.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Good

Pros: None

Cons: I have Google Chrome and IE on a Windows 7x64 install, half the links wouldn't connect using Chrome, half wouldn't connect using IE, never saw anything like this before. Needles to say, the setup never got completed. 4 hours after the unit was delivered, it was re-boxed and RMA'd to Newegg - dissatisfied with purchase.

Other Thoughts: I have no idea what caused the situation with this unit, it seems like a well constructed piece of hardware.

As soon as I get the credit, minus return shipping and re-stocking, I'll start looking for another NAS.

Newegg has been my one and only computer shopping site for years - this unit is not at all symbolic of my experience with them.

5 out of 5 eggsLove all the options this has

Pros: Got this unit so we could store all the pictures we have, along with music and videos. We use it for documents, pictures and music now too. It does take time to understand what all this unit can do, but if you go through the PDF manual this comes with, anyone could set this up.

Cons: No physical manual.

5 out of 5 eggsGood product for home and SOHO

Pros: I bought 2 x 2Tb disks and placed them in a RAID 0 (stripe for performance), but no data redundancy. I was worried about my data, but I also wanted the speed from striping.

A wonderful feature that the QNap device has is that you can setup replication jobs with Amz S3's cloud storage. The device replicates very well, with minimal setup. The only gotcha in this process is that your Amz bucket needs to be all lower case.

Over all an amazing little NAS device. Lots of functionality, good speed (disks are the bottle neck as they always are), iSCSI, NAS, RDA support for VMWare Windows Server clusters. Great for home learning lab for VMware.

Cons: Sometimes disk provisioning can be a little slow, but I haven't been able to determine if the bottle neck is the QNap or the disks. Based on utilization being reported by the QNap I’m thinking this is a disk speed issue.

The only issue I’ve found so far has been a problem with iSCSI LUN snapshots. When trying to create a LUN snap shot non of my LUNs were being displayed for snap shots.

Other Thoughts: If you're interested in setting up a home VMWare lab for learning and educational purposes this is a wonderful little device.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy so far!

Pros: Linux based box with easy setup gives a lot of flexibility. The administration interface is very helpful in setting up the most commonly used services, the community forums that qnap has also provides a huge wealth of information/addons/etc to increase the value/worth of what this NAS can do. I bought 2 hard drives for this nas, a seagate green and a WD caviar green 2 TB each. I put the disks in a JBOD configuration to give me one nice big disk. Performance seems to vary a little bit, but it's been pretty solid. I was able to stream videos no problem whatsoever to my TV while imaging one of my laptop hard drives using clonezilla with no issues.

Cons: Setting up did not go perfectly smooth. I would advise against trying to do initial setup with 2 hard drives. Just do 1 hard drive, then after the box is initially configured install the second one. Some options in some of the qnap software (vs 3rd party software) are a little odd. For example, by default, you can only select the top level of a share folder to use for the qnap bit torrent client.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm pretty happy with my NAS so far. Any problems/questions I've had were answered by searching the QNAP forums, and there is definitely a feeling of support behind this product, though I have yet to see if that is going to be the case or not.
