Best Thing Since Sliced Bread!
Pros: I bought this device to run an internal VMWare VSphere environment and to handle some misc storage needs. This thing has so many bells and whistles it's unreal. It has a bunch of apps that can be used to eliminate deploying multiple machines to handle small tasks. Some examples are a built in SMTP server, SFTP server, Web Server, Open SSL VPN server, remote file manager, and more. Some of these features aren't full products but they get the job done
Cons: One annoying thing I found is that the NAS comes with two NICs and they can be trunked and teamed for HA/Performance but can only contain 1 IP address per interface. You cannot subinterface and create multiple IP addresses if you want the device directly accessible.
Other Thoughts: Great device. Highly recommended.

Pros: Very nicely made NAS box with a ton of features. I use this primarily as a file server at home. I have 4 3TB WD Red NAS hard drives running in RAID 5 in this box. Set-up is a breeze and was as simple as popping in the drives and running the set-up disc. The default choice was RAID 5 for 4 drives, so I went with an automatic set-up. This thing is great for sharing files and they have a lot of awesome android/iphone apps to help manage your media collection. I have yet to try a lot of the media playback over the HDMI port, but I will test that out soon. What is nice about this unit is that they natively support a variety of networking standards from apple, microsoft, and unix/linux. If you want to have an itunes server to stream music, done. If you want to see your pictures library on your tv, android/iphone, ipad/tablet, done. Streaming video is the only thing that seems to be a con based on the processor speeds..
Cons: Some of the QPKG applications can cause severe performance issues. The google cloud storage app seems to cause issues. I was able to transfer files to the box at 11mb/s and then when I turned on some more QPKG's, it reduced down to 5 or 6mb/s. Because the processor is not as beefy as high-end NAS boxes ($1000+), you can't take full advantage of some of the applications. The most notable app where that is an issue is the PLEX media server app. PLEX states on its site that you have to have a some minimum processor requirements to be able to convert 1080p content on the fly or to upconvert to 1080p.
Other Thoughts: Can you get a cheaper unit to serve as a RAID5 file server? Yes.
