4 out of 5 eggsGREAT NAS FOR PRICE!!!

Pros: Hot swap 5 bays, plenty of add on applications, easy to set up and use, quiet, efficient

Cons: does allow you to run XBMC but can be sluggish at times which is not enough for me to remove an egg since this was a pleasant discovery and you should really use a HTPC for watching your movies, however what does cost this NAS one egg is that it only supports 3GB of RAM max.

Other Thoughts: So much more efficient than my home built file server. Uses way less power so much so that I have noticed a $15 decrease in my power bill per month.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent NAS, not completely polished

Pros: Attractive unit. Supports large drives and any type of RAID. Has a myriad of features, including iSCSI, NFS and AD integration if you are looking at a business or home IT lab use, HDMI and VGA outputs with built-in xbmc to double as a home theater PC, various internet server applications. US based technical support will go as far as to schedule live calls and remote access sessions to resolve an issue. The price is in line with most other reputable 5-6 bay NAS units. Pretty good mobile apps are available for managing the unit and serving as the media center remote.

Cons: The documentation isn't very good or up to date. The user community (not the actual technical support from QNAP) seemed intentionally unhelpful and there are some clear firmware bugs (none harmful to data so far).

Those interested in the home theater PC use should consider that the unit is a bit loud. Most of it seems to come from a 40mm power supply fan. It's not terrible, especially if you could stick it in a cabinet, but it is more than I would expect from a HTPC device.

A memory upgrade is required for the home theater PC use and generally speeds the unit up for other uses as well. The Crucial memory module (CT25664BF1339) I got worked fine, but some third party modules are said to not work and QNAP's own memory offering is absurdly priced.

Other Thoughts: For the number of negatives I listed, I think it's only fair to add at the end that I overall like the unit and don't feel that any of the alternatives would necessarily be better.

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME

Pros: WOW.. This thing is awesome. Really fast performance compaired to some other systems I've used. Easy to setup and configure and good power management with the ability for a power on, power off schedule.

Cons: Uses a LINUX file system so if the device were to go out, the disks cannot be read from windows. Also about 600MB is lost to a management partition per disk if using single disk configuration or only 600MB total if in a RAID configuration. Very expensive.

Other Thoughts: This system is worth the cost to me but not sure everyone would want to fork out the money on this system.
