4 out of 5 eggsProbably the best deal in town for a low end ARM based NAS device

Pros: - Very easy setup
- Performance seems good so far
- The QTS Web GUI desktop is VERY slick

Cons: - printed documentation in the box could be more for beginners. Even if it is just a few pages that goes over some of the basics of logging in and pointers to the online docs.
- Included "Squid" proxy service app is having a problem updating itself.
- Not completely silent. It is not loud by any means though. It is on my desk in front of me now with a very low "whir" from the fan. It might become annoying after a while. I might end up moving it near my router

Other Thoughts: I bought this TS-212P more than 6 months ago at an insanely inexpensive price when it was first released, but just finally got around to setting it up the other day.
I had looked at the older model of this and comparable units from Synology for a long time. When I saw the "212P" on sale for a dirt cheap price, I grabbed it.
Overall, this is a very slick product and I am happy so far. The installation process was problem free. The only hitch I had was when I forgot to go into my email to confirm my "cloud" account before proceeding to the next step. Once I did that, everything went without a hitch.
I have only two immediate problems. 1) I need to figure out how to allow "anonymous" access to a Windows file share, and 2) I installed the Crashplan server from the "Apps Center" so I need to figure out how to get that configured. The QNAP community forums look to be active and well supported so I don't think I will have much of a problem. Oh, the included Squid proxy service says there is an update for it. When I tried to let the update run, it fails to update. I don't know why. I disabled it anyway and probably won't be using it so it is not a major issue for me. I am sure there is a fix or will be. I am using it with two Samsung 1TB drives in RAID 1 . I just want to say that I disagree with some of the other reviews here. I don't know how the setup could get much easier.

1 out of 5 eggsWorked Briefly and then Died

Pros: Easy to assemble/setup and compact

Cons: Well where to start.......The unit worked after initial setup however I didn't realized that this unit was cloud-based as opposed to attaching it to my existing network. So I got optimistic and tried it and its features. It was functioning for 2 days and then the 3rd day I could no longer connect to it via the provided software. I finally put the troubleshooting aside since I was going overseas and finally got back to it last week. That is when I found out that there was something wrong with the firmware and it needs to reconfigured and re-initialized according to a tech that emailed me in response to my inquiry (Mr. Chen). After going through all the steps (over and over again) I still could not get to work even with the advise to have it seen through my network via Qnap Finder. Emailed the tech back to let him know what my findings are and I was told to open a ticket to have it sent in. I have nothing against QNAP's customer service here as I think they were great, its just I think this product is sub-standard. I told the tech rep that I wasn't going through the RMA process and would much rather buy a more reliable unit.

Other Thoughts: Like I've said, QNAP's customer service was really helpful but this product, IMHO, is a waste of money.

1 out of 5 eggsReally Bad in all aspects!!!

Pros: Sleek Model
Nice features (which doesn't work)
reasonable price

Cons: I'll strat from the time I opend the package:
1) No instructions - Very Bad start up guide
2) If you prefer to register the product via cloud, GOOD LUCK...After going thru registration process, you will get link to activate your account. Which will confirm you are registered. But when you try to login with the regitration credentials, it won't work. You have to request for "forgot password". On screen it will say password link is sent to email registered, 48 hours still didn't get password link (checked in SPAM as well).
3) Very poor customer service. I was 5th in line and I was still 5th after 60 minutes of hold time....
4) QNAP published compatible NAS drives. I brought two Seagate NAS ST2000VX000 and installed.
5) Still get error message saying "missing hard drive"
6) Tried muliple ways to make it recognize, still doesn't work.
7) Opened Support ticket sent them screenshots, no response.
8) Called customer service, again 5th in line, waited for 45 minutes before I hung up..

Other Thoughts: Thank you NewEgg for quick refund....

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Works very well, both out of the box and after tinkering with it. Supports ssh, opkg/ipkg.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: QNAP likes their users -- this has ssh capability out of the box. Supports opkg extensions so adding more functionality is a snap for linux geeks. Decent user forum at

5 out of 5 eggsBest budget NAS

Pros: QTS 4 interface is excellent...........myQNAPcloud works great, easily accessible from the web...........serves my Logitech Squeezeboxes with built in Squeezebox server........Wake ON LAN........UPS power control......speeds very acceptable for cost of device

Cons: Fan is slightly noisy but at this price, no other cons

Other Thoughts: Running 2 Seagate 3TB NAS drives in mirrored RAID. Very happy with this device...........$360 for the whole package from Newegg.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat...a...pain

Pros: Delivered quickly, and packaged well.
Looks like it has a lot of nice features....when I finally get them to work! I have been successfully using the music streaming app to my home stereo and iPhone, and those apps are nice.

Cons: So far, this has been anything but intuitive to use. Starting with the initial setup, I've spent more time troubleshooting it than I have had enjoying the features. My initial use for this unit was simply for backup and music streaming, so it's not like I'm doing a lot of power user stuff. In two weeks, have had two tickets with their Help Desk, (one still unresolved). The device keeps restarting every few hours for no apparent reason. Now having issue with back up, which will likely require another ticket. If I can get it to work, it will probably be great, but right now I'm wondering if I should have bought the Synology product.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost Perfect

Pros: Very easy to setup and full of great features. Setup as a RAID 1 and it went very smoothly.

Cons: Would not go into standby mode unless I unplugged the LAN cable. For some reason something on the system was keeping it awake.

Other Thoughts: This thing was almost perfect if not for the standby issue. based on the forums it seems to be a common one. I had every application disabled to try and isolate which one was keeping it in standby. I used SSH to get and look at the running processes and nothing indicated what was keeping it from going into standby. As having bought non enterprise hard drives, I was worried about the life of them if they didn't showdown when not in use. So I had to return it. If not for this one thing I would have loved it.

5 out of 5 eggsFeature rich home NAS solution

Pros: Purchased with (2) WD10EFRX "RedNAS" 1TB drives. Web-based setup is very simple and takes about 30 minutes from power up to ready-to-use (mostly automated setup). Default for the drives is mirroring. Pre-loaded apps include DLNA server (beta), TwonkyMedia DLNA (works well), iTunes server, MySQL, LDAP, etc - and an "app" store that includes Plex (for best results with Plex, the available version needs to be upgraded beyond what is available in the download area. Go to the Plex website and forums and find the latest ARM x19 version of the qpkg file for QNAP) On board BitTorrent software does a remarkably good job anon searching and retrieving. I've had remarkable success with 720p encoded BluRay rips but 1080p bogs down after ~2mins. No performance issues with 720p/DTS though. Files management through the Web GUI in "File Station" is very clean and quick. Interfaces are very clean and easy to use. Some familiarity with apps and NAS concepts is helpful, but likely not required. Auto-negotiate set 1000G/full duplex out of the box. Mapping network drive(s) requires creation of shared folders and permissions through user accounts, or, "everyone" access with standard permission sets. Again, some understanding of creating user accounts and setting folder/drive permissions is useful. First 12 hours of usage will require some tuning and patience as the drives are still mirroring the volumes of data I moved to them. If you have a lot of services running it can impact video streaming performance. I've also been trying to get transcoding with Roku devices working for all videos files - there are some details I am still working through. On Android devices (tablets, phones) the Plex media for movies and music works at 100% - and there's even a 'step down' setting allowing them to go to 3G devices smoothly. QNAP provides an external URL (personalized) so you can create a personal cloud. Nice feature I wasn't expecting. (3) external USB connections for expanding storage or adding peripherals (e.g. WiFi)

Cons: 3rd party Plex software (to provide Android functionality) requires installation of beta software from the user forums at Plex user forums. TonwkyMedia DLNA struggles with 1080p content delivery but FLAWLESS 720p/DTS.

Other Thoughts: This is the first NAS I've built for home use. I had the idea that during setup I'd get to choose mirroring of volumes or making a JBOD. I might have missed that, but, I think it defaulted to mirroring. Having known that upfront, I likely would have bought a pair of 2TB drives to have 2TB available in storage. Just the same, since I can expand through external connections I am not disappointed. The WD Red NAS drives are very, very good drives.

2 out of 5 eggsNot as expected

Pros: Nice interface, many functions on the first look.

Cons: Plastic enclosure. Functions I am looking for not actually available. The purpose I bought this NAS is to use as a IP camera recorder. Although there are over 1000 IP camera models listed, unfortunately, the IP camera I had with Onvif can not be recognized by QNAP. There is no available help to setup a generic IP camera. The second issue is with ftp. Ftp setup is quite easy, but it ends there. The problem is ftp upon login in, is root folder, you can put anything files there without having 550 forbidden filename error. As a general Linux ftp login, it should bring you in the user's folder, not in root. Of course, you can change folder but it defeats the purpose since I can't control my IP camera to change a folder upon ftp.

Other Thoughts: The function set could be useful to other users. But the very first 2 functions I am hoping for simply let me down.
