3 out of 5 eggsGreat, if I needed a slow server solution

Pros: RAID easy to set up
Basically a mini server
Low power consumption
Interface with AFP, SMB, etc.
Could, technically, hook up KVM

Cons: Having a box with it's own Q-OS seems silly
Seems more focused on delivering Apps instead of being a storage solution (modern computer trend, eh?)
Not sure my current computer can interface NAS any other way but through network
Frustrating to have no option to stay logged in through web interface
Inflexible feeling, prefers you to do things its way

Other Thoughts: What I really wanted was a box filled with storage (and RAID). What I got is a small, slow computer filled with apps. Being my first entry into the NAS world, maybe I should have expected that. Having said that, it is possible that I might, maybe, find some of these apps useful. AFAIK, I don't think I could swap them out like, say, if this were just a small, standard Linux box. What this also means, is that interacting with the thing--through a browser that times out way too quickly--is a slow, frustrating process. Transfers from a drive hooked up externally to do initial copying has been slow and failure producing. I tried pushing the data through the network, but that seemed even more awfully slow and a drain on my network (to be fair, I think there is a non-Gigabit hub in the way). Did I mention it's slow? It also really wants to be your digital entertainment hub, and, again, NOT just a RAID storage solution. Sigh.

5 out of 5 eggsGood For the money

Pros: Reasonable for what I paid.
Works well for my file storage needs.
4 x 3 TB WD red drive in it.
I have 2.1 TB free

Cons: It seems a little slow to me when it did the disk check after creaking the array. I do not think it was slow I mean 4 x 3 TB drives is 12 TB of data.
Yes I know it is only 9 TB total but it has to write 3 TB of parity and do a crc check.

Other Thoughts: I think I will go to the TS-431+ or TS-451 next time. This device is good for what I needed it for, make no mistake. I have used about 15 of the higher end QNaps at work this one is good for the price.

Remember all good NAS's use Linux so ram requirements are minimum.

You will be limited on how many apps you can run since it only has 512 K, For me it was not an issue at all I need a good and reliable file storage device.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This is a fantastic little unit. I have always wanted a NAS to store my data such as pictures and music. So I can easily stream over the network whether I am at home or on the road.

Cons: Plus, the benefit of large storage space where I can store backup. Overall, I am happy with the purchase. I am sure this unit will be with me for a while.

5 out of 5 eggsMC

Pros: I was skeptical about the performance and usability of this unit. luckily, my friend owns one. so I borrow it and test it out myself before I purchase it. Overall, for simple data storage, this unit is good for the task. However, if the CPU can be faster. it will be a even better deal.

For my usage and need, this is a great buy.

Cons: N/A

3 out of 5 eggsqnap ts-451

Pros: OK NAS for the home or small business.

Cons: cannot upgrade the memory, your stuck with 500mb and I have experienced some HD streaming issues. I purchased this for the raid redundancy.

Other Thoughts: This is my first QNAP. Not first NAS.
I purchased this after reading reviews about the ts-451.
come to find out QNAP likes to make major changes
while keeping same model# they add things like a
plus sign or call it pro, Most of the online reviews I researched never stated exactly what model it was other than the TS-451.

1 out of 5 eggsThe Worst NAS I've encountered

Pros: Great Construction with a solid build. The hardware is well designed and the fit/finish is there. Physically a great device. The UI is well designed as well.

Cons: Functionally the product is horrible. I purchased this unit with 4x6TB WD RED drives. The compatibility list gave me a warning that it only handled 18TB volumes so I thought that's fine I'll create a 4disk Raid 5 of the max size. Nope, it won't even touch the 4th disk because the total size would be over 18TB. Fine, I picked up a different unit that could and used this for backing up the primary. Unfortunately the primary QNAP 651 had firmware problems (couldn't upgrade/downgrade or anything) after Tech Support messed around for 5 weeks they asked me to send everything in (including drives with data on them) so they could investigate. Ya right! I secure wiped that and returned (5 days since they received and still waiting for my refund). So I have my data on this unit, no primary unit. I picked up a Synology, built the array and started copying data from my backup to the primary. Half way through the backup the QNAP threw an I/O error on a disk did a automatic ejection of drive 3 from the raid...then ejected drive 2, drive 1 and finally drive 4. in the mean time it kept trying to recover. End result corrupt RAID and ALL DATA LOST!!!! reboot the NAS and all drives are fully functional with ZERO SMART errors logged. Pure and simple this was a QNAP problem which wiped my backup of data while trying to recover from their non-functional primary NAS device. Fortunately this was for home use so just movies and music.

Other Thoughts: Worst tech support I've ever had to deal with. They work during the day only M-F. Real useful for people with jobs of their own. For those who think this may be a user situation, that's possible of course but I am an infrastructure engineer and manage enterprise NAS and SAN for a living. I've never had problems like this before.

4 out of 5 eggsHardware is great, software needs work

Pros: -Solid build quality
-Fast
-Surprisingly quiet
-Easy setup
-Remove access & media streaming capabilities are excellent

Cons: -Backup software is a bit buggy with auto start
-Requires a lot of proprietary software on the local machine to take advantage of the NAS's features

Other Thoughts: Bought this and slapped 2 3TB drives into a RAID 1 configuration to back up the various systems I have around the house. Solid home office backup solution that doubles as a remote media server, which is nice. My main issue is with QNAP's software, which is required to utilize even the most basic features on the NAS. Their backup utility is a little buggy when it comes to actually connecting to the NAS and accepting user credentials. Beyond that, it's just annoying to have to download a new program from QNAP any time I want to use another feature on the NAS. The machine itself though is solid.

5 out of 5 eggsQNAP rocks!

Pros: I always wanted to buy a NAS to store all my family photos and videos, as well as my movie collection. After doing my research, I decided to buy this new entry-level NAS from QNAP which was released in late 2014.

One of the major reasons why I chose QNAP over the others such as Synology is simply because of the product and software support. I now use it to store all my media files with a RAID 5 volume and also use the built-in DLNA media server to stream my files to several smart TVs in our house. In addition, I also set up the remote access with the built-in myQNAPcloud feature, and now I am able to access my NAS from virtually everywhere either via web browser or my iphone, QNAP provides ton of iOS apps for its NAS device.

Cons: Plex Media Server is not yet available for this series, but I heard that Plex will release it very soon.

3 out of 5 eggsSupport a little lacking - Update

Pros: See prior Review

Cons: See prior review

Other Thoughts: After writing the review and posting it I received an E-Mail from Qnap tech support with an apology that my initial request had been mis routed. I sent them the requested log files and other information and they are replacing the unit. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is but we can move to the next step. Their response time when it finally started has been good.

I'v upgraded my review by 1 egg and if the replacement unit works correctly I will update this report.
