5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: very easy to set up right out of the box. use it mainly for photo and file sharing with familiy in Europe. use the print server function to be able to print of our laptop. use a 250 GB WD (IDE, 5400rpm) with it and does not get very hot.

Cons: None so far. meets my expectations.

5 out of 5 eggsExpensive for an NAS but worth it because it's so much more

Pros: I've purchased a total of 3 of these (the DS-106j and 2 DS-107's) and have been enthralled by the number of features each time. This one I use at home for personal NAS and created a network drive on all my machines, print server, external photo gallery I can show friends and family, external file station (download files from NAS over easy to use web interface), web server with php. It does everything I was planning a server I'd put together would except recording TV shows.

I use one at work as an external file server. Since it's not windows based it's less likely (but not impossible) to be hacked, so I can put it directly connected to the Internet without a firewall for an easy to access external FTP, file station, and photo gallery.

In both cases I can attach a USB disk and backup to it in a format any computer can read. I was even able to backup one to the other ENCRYPTED OVER THE INTERNET!! for easy to manage SCHEDUALED off-site backup.

Cons: Pricey if you're just looking for an NAS, or print server, but not if you plan to fully utilize it. Also, should have a way to do initial setup without having to install software (work around is installing the software on a virtual computer, setup, then undo disk changes).

Backup solutions are well done and thought out, but backup to windows share should be included as well, or at least instructions on setting up an rsync server on a windows machine.

Other Thoughts: If you don't have an IDE HD for this already buy one of the DS-107's and a SATA drive instead. They perform better.

Some people might not like having to install the HD, but with an enclosure that costs this much, would you want it to be useless when the internal drive fails? Or not be able to expand later?

4 out of 5 eggsPost Photos Newegg!

Pros: Excellent features: GB Ethernet, 1 touch backup of USB devices, allows FAT32/NTFS formatted drives up to 500GB(Read-only when using net), allows expantion with another USB 2.0 drive

Cons: At the time of this post Newegg had no pics, but then again go to Synology's website and they've got them.

Other Thoughts: This drive will be arriving soon as I've done research I will write another review in a week or so
