5 out of 5 eggsGreat device

Pros: Easy setup, simply operation, intuitive web front end, mod-able back end, one click USB device syncing, and so much more. Active development from Synology. Many features are being refined at user request. This makes for a more compelling product.

Cons: many of the feature are only available over the internet (rather then local network) while connecting as Admin. This is a problem if you have a two people who wish to listen to audio remotely at the same time.

Other Thoughts: My main concern was the limited user access. However, this draw back has only reared it's head once in the 4 months I've owned this product.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS Synology DS107+ (128MB)

Pros: easy setup via ip address in web browser ex. 192.168.x.x
easy mapping to NAS drive through Windows Explorer
fast transfers using hard-wired ethernet
energy saving options for example, HDD power down
This NAS does other things but wanted it to do 1 thing and it does it very well (external file access to all computers on a network)

Cons: not as fast transfers using wireless from router
price could be a little cheaper but you get what you pay for

Other Thoughts: Was intimidated upon setting up this NAS but isn't everything like that when it's your first time? Anyway, I bought an approved HDD listed on the Synology site; chose the ST31000340AS (1TB) slid it in and installed the mount screws, shut the lid and plugged in the connections. Next was to format the HDD and then set the user preferences through the internet browser which I found the interface very satisfying. It's interface is set-up like Windows Explorer. Once the users and their priveliges were assigned, restart and map the drive in Windows Explorer and you're ready to populate the external NAS. After everything was done, this wasn't as hard as I thought it was gonna be. Also, I was looking just to have an external location on my network to store files externally and that's it.
I would recommend this setup to anyone who wants a location on their network where wired/wireless computers can access files without having a dedicated computer to be left on.

3 out of 5 eggscould be better

Pros: It´s a reasonably priced NAS for a home/office network. Has many nice features, like been avail to be manage thru the web. Easy to setup.
The operation system is unix based.
Synology has a forum with info on different topics like: General Support, network management, internet services, etc.

Cons: For the multimedia part of it (Photos, music, videos). If you put too many items at once (some people say more than 200 object) the system will chock, and will give an eternal “reindex” message. Which will degrade the performance.
About the Download Station
• Uses a “cripple” old version of rtorrent.
• Some BitTorrent places will ban you for using it
• don´t allow you to seed after the file finishes,
• The speed is not great, especially if compare with a new version of rtorrent or utorrent.
• Doesn’t use DHT.

Other Thoughts: If it’s a NAS what you are look for, this is it. But, if you want a system to download bittorrent files, think of it as buying and old car; in this case, you will learn a lot of UNIX if you want it to run smoothly, but also consider that the “mod” will void the warranties.
