5 out of 5 eggsGreat device

Pros: Works as advertised. No problems in an Active Directory environment alongside Macs. Both types of users found the device w/ no problem. Performance was very good configured in RAID5, though it will take several hours to initialize w/ 5-1TB drives attached simultaneously.

Cons: Inserting the drives took a few tries. The drive bays are a bit flimsy, so you have to align the drive perfectly for proper installation. Also, the locking mechanism popped off a couple of times when trying to lock the drive due to the drive not being perfectly aligned. It did go back on w/o damage though.

Other Thoughts: Can't beat the price vs performance.

5 out of 5 eggsSuhwheeet!

Pros: Plug and play. Idiot Proof. Good transfer speed. Extremely simple, straightforward interface. 50w at the wall average power usage with (5) Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EACS 1TB. So, amazing power efficiency, blazing speed, decent price, brainless UI, looks good too. Whisper soft. What more can you ask for?

Cons: Ummm... Aaahhh.... Hmm.... Sorry....

Other Thoughts: This thing is packed with user-friendly features. I'd buy another 10 of them if I needed the space. I'm going to have to try really hard to fill this thing as it is. LOVE IT!

Also, people are talking about testing each of the drives in a stand-alone hd case before even plugging them into the system. I'm kind of paranoid, so I considered it, but after plugging the drives in, the system indicated that all of the drives were working fine. I simply created a raid 5 volume out of the 5 1tb drives and let it do it's thing for about 7 hrs (using the long, safer option - there's 2 options to create volume, chose the second for safety's sake). After it was done, everything was good! No network issues, just works.

2 out of 5 eggsNot worth the price

Pros: Good looking, nice designed software, 5 bays

Cons: loose disk tray, very easy be broken. long time building raid array, in my case, 5 * 1TB raid5 last 14 hours. 11 hours for 5 * 640GB and 7 hours for 5 * 147GB. I spent a whole week try to make this thing work. all failed with disk sets above. keeps drop out even I followed offical instruction to prepare disks(cost me extra 2 days).

Other Thoughts: I have thecus 5200BR and 3200, they never give me any trouble, rock solid NAS. those disk sets I have tested on ds-508 all have no problem work with thecus products.

3 out of 5 eggsBeen waiting for this. Will wait more....

Pros: Synology makes a very good NAS. I own a 4 disk NAS from years ago, and it is still working very nicely. Their latest firmware updates add some very nice features, and they keep add more and more. They are non-stop on features. Plus a very nice community that supports their products too.

Cons: Too pricey. I agree with the other poster here, that these devices are just too expensive. The high price of this unit will keep me looking for a while longer. Just an outdated slow ITX computer, 4 or 5 SATA ports, linux, and a power supply should be only $100 IMHO. (I know, I could build my own if I wanted to at this price.) These prices are just silly. Some company will figure that out soon and blow this market to pieces.

Other Thoughts: Waiting for a real consumer level RAID box.... Synology deserves a rating of 5, but not at this price.

4 out of 5 eggsReally neat

Pros: Great feature set for the price, in my opinion. My old RAID box was a simply USB/Firewire and cost more than this device with just only 4 500GB PATA drives. I haven't speed tested the 1000BASE-TX transfer speeds but I have both interfaces configured for jumbo frames and it is noticably faster than my old USB / FW RAID box.

Cons: The drive trays are a little flimsy but you really don't mess with these much and the thinness contributes to more airflow. This thing stays pretty cool even with 5 Seagate 1TB drives working for hours non-stop. The only feature I am waiting for is shrink volume and hot spare RAID 5 as well as RAID 6 support. Synology says they are looking for September 2008's firmware to add these features.

Other Thoughts: Well worth the purchase. I am using 5 Seagate 1TB drives in RAID 5 which gives me a 3.53TB archive.

2 out of 5 eggsi expected too much

Pros: attractive enough. seems to do what's advertised. gives you ssh access to its own running environment, which is a nice touch until you break something in there. synology does seem to be making frequent firmware updates, so perhaps it will improve in the future.

Cons: as of july 2007 this product's firmware doesn't support hot spares. arrays can be grown but not shrunk.

the drive rail mechanism is very poorly engineered - my disks continually go in wrong or get stuck, and the metal springs on each drive tray fall off over time. this is one of the NAS's worst aspects.

the user interface uses AJAX as synology has marketed it, but primarly to throw up "loading" and "please wait for this operation to complete" alerts. it's not so useful for monitoring anyway as it continually logs me out.

it won't recognize a drive moved from one bay to the next, so this occasions a whole degrade/rebuild cycle. repairs don't happen automatically either - the administrator has to hit a "repair" button.

Other Thoughts: i would like to have paid about a hundred bucks for this item. too bad i had to buy close to the cutting edge and paid an order of magnitude more.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: This NAS does everything and does it really fast. It is easy to set up and use. The software that comes with it is good. It streams movies and pictures to my PS3 no problem, with one click set up.

Cons: It's pricey, and the documentation is a little sparse, but it's so easy to use you really dont need it.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if you could do online back up to mozy or carbonite with this.
