5 out of 5 eggsDoes EVERYTHING

Pros: This thing does everything you could want. iTunes library sharing, bittorrent downloading, FTP, one touch backups, print server, and it is ntfs so if it dies you can still get the data. This thing is awesome! Oh and the user interface is actually nice and easy to use!

Cons: price, some people say it s slow...

Other Thoughts: if you are not constantly using this as a fileserver for all your files, it is perfect for sharing things amongst multiple computers like all those photos or those seasons of tv shows. Also the bittorrent feature is great because you dont have to leave your main computer on to download stuff. Saves a lot of power.

4 out of 5 eggsJust Good, Awesome if it was faster

Pros: First the good: It works, took about an hour to format a 1TB WG green drive. Local syncing possible via USB drive and synch button as USB2 speeds. Defaults for extra services all off as shipped. Lots of options to play with, google for details.

Cons: It. Is. Slow. Though plenty fast for your ISP, downloads and music, even (highly compressed) HD video streaming, but slooooow for power users using it as a mini file server. Large file (GB) sizes transfer at just 6MByte/sec or so. Little files are much worse. Copying an XP CD folder goes at an average of 2MByte/sec. Figure you'll get 10GB/hour on average - it would take 2 weekends to fill a TB drive via ethernet.

Other Thoughts: The USB sync is a major benefit as far as offsetting the initial sync goes, and rsync will help longer term, but... Don't think you'll serve ghost images off this puppy in a hurry. Basically it's a fancy NSLU2 with an internal bay.

Power Use: Killawatt measured power draw is 0 watts when off off, 10-15 in use, 20 on bootup. Idle >10watts.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Good price, very easy to install HD and set up the basic stuff, it is very very quiet and it has low power consumption. It works!!

Cons: I find the included manual short and not very informative. For initial setup not a big problem, but this product has many advanced features that I feel is not explained very well.

Other Thoughts: I only give 4 eggs because of the poor manual, but overall I recommend this product

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: Print server, iTunes server, file server with access control, ftp server, automated backup software comes in package, dhcp client. You plug it in and it just works, I tried this NAS with several SATA drives I had lying around. ranging from an 80GB I had from a macbook upgrade, to a 500GB I bought specially for this. I can leave the unit on and it'll be just fine. The fan kicks on but it rarely ever needs it. The specific feature I bought this for was Hard Drive Spindown. This means when the hdd isn't in use, it essentially turns it off until its needed again, this greatly increases the life of a hard drive and is a must have feature in all NAS's.

Cons: Slow network speed. I saw a max throughput of 4MBps (yes MB, not mb) And the unit froze up when I used the USB drive backup feature once, it required a hard reboot.

Other Thoughts: Everything just works, I can't tell you enough as a network administrator how important it is that is just works. I will take a more reliable product over a slightly faster simply because I don't have to deal with troubleshooting it. After buying my first, I've preceded to buy two more and install them at other locations and I don't have to worry about them going out on me.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice

Pros: Features - Great features for the price.
Easy Setup - You can setup most things very easily and with very little time spent.
Cost - You get plenty of feature for relatively low price.

Cons: For the price I cant say there are any cons.

Other Thoughts: The CPU speed is rather slow and the ram is only 32 MB, but this is an entry/beginner (NAS). I use this primarily for photo album, FTPand webpage host and it works great.
Network transfer speeds are a bit slow (about 70 mbps) for people like myself that are use to using 70%+ (700+ Mbps) of a full gigabit network, but I am still happy with the speed it is runs. I would assume the higher end models would transfer faster. If anyone knows please comment.

5 out of 5 eggsRidiculously Good

Pros: Quiet, cool, fast (for price range), low power. Nice AJAX admin interface. Linux. All sorts of protocols, services, extensions available. Hackable, if you can cross compile for PPC. Can schedule on/off times.

Cons: It could use a tiny bit more memory. Apparently this device actually does have only 32mb of memory and 512mb swap, so if you turn on all the features it might get chunky and slow. I was very happy with transfer rates though with defaults at this price level (maxed out 100 ethernet).

Other Thoughts: Linux 2.4.22. Freescale PPC processor, ~130 bogomips. Uses busybox + ash. This thing has a slowish processor, but on the flip side with a WD green drive the total unit draws only 7 watts idle and 12 watts while active (includes loss from power brick). Basically power use will depend almost entirely on your drive. Never got above +20 fahrenheit ambient even after continuous use for hours. Can't recommend this unit highly enough, only speed freaks could be disappointed but at this price and power use it's still awesome.

2 out of 5 eggsDS108j Probs

Pros: Out of the box Assembly.
I have only had the DS108j lockup once in the first month.
Print server seems OK.
USB copy works OK.
USB drive Externals seems OK.
Quiet...

Cons: Synology Assistant seems to be required to map drives with Windows 2000 Pro.
Almost everything that could be a problem with the Web interface WAS... and IS... (I need FreeType support with the PHP, which seems to be missing (will run phpBB3 and Joomla but NOT Expose'))!
Adding Packages seems to be more a sales pitch and less a usable function.
The 108j Disk Station software directory's seem to be only available with the Telnet interface.
MySQL access seems to be localhost ONLY unless you use a 3rd party software program that isn't included by Synology (which adds more the learning curve as well as problems).
I haven't found a way to get Synology Assistant to detect the DS108j with Windows 2000 Pro using Comodo Firewall Pro in any config other than Allow All (lots of Force's, still no JOY) (after the DS108j is found the firewall can be set back to custom) (works ok with Windows XP Pro and Comodo).

Other Thoughts: I got the cheaper 108j rather than spend quite a bit more on the better Synology stations. The problems I have had with my DS108J seems to be in the entire line so I'm happy I saved the money.
I would have been a !!! LOT !!! happier with a cheap computer built up with the same features of the better Synology stations for about the same money as the DS108j with Ubuntu (or Ubuntu Server) for the operating system with full feature PHP and MYSQL.
I still haven't found a way to get the DS108j to run even a minimal E-Mail server.
I can only hope that Synology will make EXTREME improvements to the DS108j's software in the weeks to come (especially in the Web interface)!!

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: - Setup is completely straight-forward.
- HTTP(S) administration interface extremely well done.
- HDD/USBHDD hibernation.
- SSH access!
- Sufficient cooling.
- Oh-so-many options...

Cons: - Built-in shell is pretty limited to start (BusyBox v1.1.0); looks hackable though.

Other Thoughts: Using with a 1TB Cuda (3G/s) @ ~45 degrees Celsius after about an hour of sustained activity.

Haven't upgraded to gigabit LAN yet, so I can't speak to full performance. If you ARE on a completely gigibait LAN, be sure to enable Jumbo Frames for maximum performance and processor efficiency.

I have an old 160GB USB2.0 external that I hooked up and attempted to copy all data from with Explorer; this of course routed the data through my local machine and back, and was thus very slow. Better way = hook up drive to front USB port and use USB Copy function to dump contents to main drive. Best way = SSH in and cp the directory(s) to the main drive.

Haven't yet (but will) test out the iTunes and FTP servers.

I did a lot of research (DEC-08) and this unit really stood out from others in the same price range. I am in agreement. Remember to upgrade the firmware.
