5 out of 5 eggsFinally a solution...

Pros: This NAS is perfect for someone who already has a marginal understanding of computer networking. I would not recommend this for someone new to computers. I have two desktops and one laptop in my house and have finally merged all of thier files on to this NAS using 2 1TB Western Digital Drives (FALS) in RAID 1 mode. I have previously lost almost 500GB of personal pictures and videos on a external drive and stress the importance of back-up as I have lost those memories. This NAS is completely controllable via FTP or HTTP and you can even set it as a "network drive" to just drag and drop from any computer on the same network. Go to thier website and read more about the OS that is installed, I love the interface and the ability to have iTunes recognize all music files on the drive as a remote folder.

Cons: Slight degree of learning for those who have never dealt with a home network, may seem a bit overwhelming at first.

Other Thoughts: I wish this technology was available and affordable in this size of enclosure years ago. Going bcak and forth fomr 3 computers in my house with 3 different music collections is a thing of the past! I can set this to turn off or on at a predetermined time of day and automatically begin d/l'ing torrent files that I remotely trasnfer from any computer...I can't complain about the price, even with two 1TB drives it in it....worth every penny!

5 out of 5 eggsExpensive But Good NAS

Pros: Good performance, small form factor, easy assembly, lots of features, direct drive access via external USB/eSATA. Native UPS support for safe shutdown built-in to latest firmware. Nice application support, particularly for photo sharing or streaming applications. EXT3 filesystem. Fairly robust SMB support for Windows users.

Cons: Price.

Other Thoughts: I have to basically echo the comments of the other reviewers-if you are in search of a home or SOHO NAS that gives you more than the standard compliment of features but still maintains a media-centric vibe, this is it. In my case, I bought this unit and installed two Seagate CC1G 1.5 TB hard drives into it (and worried a little bit that they would have the firmware issues) however am happy to report that, so far, they have worked flawlessly. Great for consolidation of data and and quick place to shoot my new pictures and music to share around the house network. I look forward to the possibility of encrypted volume via TrueCrypt or some other method in the future. But for now I have a place to store my stuff without building up a whole server to do so, and get probably 70% of the features I use most anyway. Highly recommended if you have a similiar setup and are pondering if this will be adequate for your needs.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Top of the line performance with a rich feature set. The DSM UI is intuitive and all the major functions come with wizards that fully automate everything. For someone who has tried to setup a home server, to say this was entirely hassle-free is an understatement.

Cons: -Steep price for drive-less NAS
-Lacks more advanced settings for power users

Other Thoughts: Great product for small office/business/savvy/prosumer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS with tons of features

Pros: High performance - From what I read it has better transfer rates than any other NAS box in its class.
Rich feature set - Comes with web server, upnp for streaming media, surveillance center for monitoring network cameras, and a lot more.
Excellent management/user interface - The new synology web management software is sleek and easy to use.
Raid - Easy to install drives and do initial disk/raid configuration.

Cons: The price of the DS209+ is higher than other similar units, but you get what you pay for and I have not been disappointed.

Other Thoughts: This box is much much more than a place to store your files on your network. The feature set on this unit is amazing. So far I have utilized the Audio Station for streaming my music collection over the web, upnp for streaming video to my Xbox 360, Photo Station for sharing pics with family over the web, iTunes server for sharing my music library on the local network, the Web Station for hosting multiple websites. All of the above features have worked great, and they are extremely easy to control and setup using the new Synology Managment software. I'm looking forward to using the Surveillance Center as soon as my new IP Cameras arrive.

4 out of 5 eggsOverall, very good

Pros: Solid construction. Worked immediately out of the box and recognized my twin 1TB Western Digital drives without a problem. Configuration (admin tool) UI has a relatively easy layout, so it's easy to navigate to what you want. The admin tool is very fast on my Vista machine (see note below).

Cons: Expensive compared to some similar 2-disk NAS devices. Cannot setup more than a single partition per disk or RAID disk(s). This is apparently a known issue on the manufacturers support forum. One way around this is to setup a quota for a folder. Not sure if this is both software AND hardware limitation or just software, but throwing down on something this expensive, it is something I expected to be included.

Other Thoughts: I like how this looks and that it is not too large. From my usage so far, it does everything I want it to do. It's fast and reliable for almost a month now. I had a hard time picking it because of the price. However, after reading performance reviews, it out performed all similar NAS devices by a fair margin. Synology also has a great record in all the reviews and research that I read before making this purchase.

I would have given it a 5 rating, but I was highly disappointed in the lack of multiple partitions on the same disk. Furthermore, it is a fair amount more than some of its competitors, so if you're strapped for cash, this is probably not for you (considering the drives must be purchased extra).
