4 out of 5 eggsWell Thought Out NAS

Pros: This is overall a very good product. It does what it must plus a little more.

For the bit of iSCSI weirdness that I had, Synology Tech Support was clear, responsive and helpful.

In the end, I paired this device up with some diskless servers to form a ESXi Whitebox solution and with the exceptions noted below, a very good solution.

Cons: * One iSCSI Initiator per Target makes failover and things like VMotion difficult.

* Traditional SAMBA weirdness. Don't expect heavy integration with a windows environment using SAMBA. Thats more of a general comment about SAMBA than Synology.

* Video Surveillance looks like it should work great. Purchased a Panasonic camera off the Synology HCL but still experiencing integration problems.

Other Thoughts: * Don't expect HLDNA to be an acceptable form for navigating significant libraries of content. It's not really a Synology problem, but should be remembered if you are purchasing this device to use that feature.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product, outstanding service

Pros: Easy and intuitive to set up. Excellent web-based UI. Dual gigabit Ethernet ports is a strong plus.
I installed 5 WD2002FYPS drives (2TB each) and had the system up and running (RAID 6) as quickly as the drives could be formatted. Several days later, one of the drives failed (yes, that does happen in this era of "commodity" drives!). Synology tech support was quick to assist in the troubleshooting. Replacement of the drive was a snap.
I'm now ordering another DS509+ and will retire the brand B NAS systems.

Cons: None whatsoever.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Yes, it's expandable as it says, yes it has the features it says, yes it's "all that and more"! The only thing the features never say (that I want to bring up) is that it's QUIET. Also, it's not hot (it's not overheating). This is important for me, as my server room is a home office and my server is a mac mini running Mac OS X Server (which, by the way, is also quiet, but does get very very HOT indeed!) This thing rocks!

Cons: None. I couldn't get it to connect to the mac server for domain authentication, but I think that was a mac os x server problem, not a synology problem. I also only needed 5 users, so it was easy enough to just create 5 users.

5 out of 5 eggsOffsite and Local Backup

Pros: Easy to install, Joined my domain quickly. I am using this paired with SAMSUNG F1 RAID Class HE103UJ (4 in each). Raid 5. I have one NAS at my corporate office and another located across the city. I pushed 12gb of data across our two (20/5) FIOS lines in about 6 hours. The device is pretty sturdy and so far so good.
