1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE OF SYNOLOGY

Pros: Good Setup

Cons: Synology Support is horrible. You can't get through half of the time and just get hung up on, no waiting in a q or anything. Once you do get through you usually speak to someone that is very hard to understand if you speak english because they are from some foreign country. They rely too heavily on their email support which I have to say at best is HORRIBLE! "Take this step, then email us back" 2-3 days later you finally get a response to take another step and as you can see the circle continues for DAYS! I have two of these systems and I have just learned that Synology will not warranty their products if you purchased it from somewhere other than an "approved" 3rd party. Thus any Synology Diskstation that you buy from another seller or any other site or store...if something were to go wrong, like in my case a power supply malfunction, they WILL NOT cover it!! I've been 10+ years in the business and have never run across this in an IT company.

Other Thoughts: BUY A DIFFERENT NAS STATION! These guys rip you off..NO WARRANTY SUPPORT!

2 out of 5 eggsNot what the reviews say it is... by a long shot

Pros: It might eventually allow you to access files across your home network. Some computers will, other will not. Even at that, they wont always be accessible.
It can sometimes stream media to a UPnP DMA player. Then again, not always. It cannot stream media over the internet like it claims.
6 months in and one horrible dead end headache after another, it will not "simply" do anything.

Cons: Everything is a Con with this unit. I've been battling every possible simple task possible and it's been an absolute nightmare. Expect to spend countless evenings poking through synologys endless and confusing forums to try and figure out the simplest task. Do not expect answers on their forums. Especially answers that work. Expect to spin your wheels and be extremely frustrated for months on end.

Other Thoughts: - All I want to do is have a file server that I can share files on other windows based PCs. I got one to work out of three. Two are hard wired through a 24port 1gbt switch, one is wireless.
- All I want to do is stream audio files... even with a 1gbt backbone, anything greater then 192kb MP3s will pause randomly. FLACs are even worse.
- All I want to do is stream MP4 videos to a PS3. Sometimes works, sometimes doesnt... (not sure this is NAS related or not)
- All I'd like to do is access my audio and photos over the internet via the Android store application. Works great when I'm at home, but refuses to work on the cellular network.

here's the thing that frustrates me the most. When you tick a [X] box, that says basically "hey, i want to enable this function", it actually disables it. *EVERYTHING* in the latest firmware is on opposite day. If I didn't have $1K wrapped up in this NAS, I'd have gone to something far more functional.

This has been *my* experience.

5 out of 5 eggsJust awsome

Pros: so many features , simple to use and rock solid. This is my 3rd unit form synology and all have performed 100%.

Cons: sometimes formating can take a day or 2 for the varios raid types.
So far only 2TB max supported drives , check thier site for HD compatability list

Other Thoughts: buy with confidence

2 out of 5 eggsUnderpowered

Pros: Cheap NAS device; Plenty of features; runs net-SNMP, which means it can be remotely monitored without TOO much configuration.

Cons: I have two big complaints with this device thus far.

First, when I connected the system to my LAN, I ran the setup program that comes on the installation CD. It was unable to format the system drive twice, and disconnected one other time. This was nothing that a little persistence wasn't able to solve, but I thinks it's evidence of of a need for refinement. An error message would have been helpful too...

Secondly, it's clearly underpowered. I connected a USB drive up to the device and started copying files over. During the file transfer process, the system was maxed out on CPU. I would expect this if I were having it calculate fibbonacci numbers or some heavy-math operation, but a machine shouldn't max out simply from simple IO... I can't imagine what would compel someone to try to use the other features of the system like mysql or PHP, knowing how poorly it performs it's primary function of being a fileserver.

Other Thoughts: I also have owned a synology CS407 NAS device in the past, and I think that might have been better than this DS410J.

5 out of 5 eggsMore than just a perfect RAID server.

Pros: Small, quiet, excellent build quality, gigabit/jumbo support, fairly fast (25MB/s Up & 50MB/s Down) and a full software suite that does anything you want to do. Supports Win7 offline files.

Cons: Only hiccup is when you upload 10,000 photos.. it builds thumbnails for the next 3 days consuming it's CPU. Default should be off. The unit still functions but speed is a little compromised.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Little Device!

Pros: The price is right. It has a lot of capability. Whether you are an administrator or basic user, it pretty much covers the whole range. Things are really easy to implement and there are numerous little features, nooks, and crannies to enable and explore on this device. You can even go in through the back-end through terminal to tweak some of the advanced settings. Lots and lots of neat little features for the price and good performance and capability. I would highly recommend this little thing to anyone looking for a little backup server or media server w/ reliable data. Very happy with this purchase! Thanks New Egg!

Cons: I haven't run into any yet. The only thing is its doing a lot of "thinking"/read-write to the RAID after a software update, but.... I think its just adjusting :)

Other Thoughts: Smaller than I thought. It is about the size of a toaster. Its not going to win any beauty awards but it is just a cool little thing, friendly looking kinda like R2-D2....

1 out of 5 eggsGreat until Sw upgrade

Pros: haven;t used it too much given the problem I'm having with it.

Cons: had version 2.x software and it seemed to work fine. Upgraded to the latest v3.0-1337 and internal web server will not connect Synology support had been less than helpful.

5 out of 5 eggsSeems Fine

Pros: Good support from manufacturer's site, solid reputation, reasonably priced, smaller than one would expect for the capacity and layout, well packaged, comes with everything you need to set it up - excluding the hard drives, of course. Simple, fast set-up.

Cons: While not precisely a con as such, I wish that this unit offered upgradeable RAM - capacity or speed, either way. 128MB is OK, but with more and/or faster ram (and a better processor - see Other Thoughts), it would be downright wicked.

Other Thoughts: Some reviews state that it took hours to set up and format the unit. Populated with four (4) 1TB Samsung F3 SATA HDs, running through a Gigabit LAN, it took me 17 minutes to install the DSM software, access the unit, set name, admin password, date, time, network preferences and format the drives for use. Report states RAID 5 build, all discs accounted for and ready for use. Maybe it is the network, but that is no where near an hour. Gigabit router, gigabit switches, CAT6 cables, interface through a hand-built box running Win 7 Pro x64 off a RAID 0 array and pushed by a Phenom II x4 955 BE through 8GB of DDR3/1600 RAM. Right now, I am loading test data for burn-in, and the transfer rate is showing min 21MB/s with a peak of just under 42MB/s. Considering some of that data is from external USB2.0 drives connected to the comp, that is pretty good.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: + Fast shipping by Newegg (as usual) - Thank you!
+ Easy drive install - the unit comes with four trays which you slide the drives into and secure with 4 screws and then the trays simply slide in and the SATA and power connectors mate to the back-plane.
+ Easy software setup - put in the CD and follow the directions
+ Logical web management interface (haven't had to look at the manual yet)

Cons: + only one issue so far and it was minor. one of the first steps in the software setup is to select the .PAT file image from the CD to be loaded based on NAS model and it took a few tried for the browse file selection to take. I would select and when I clicked Next it would clear the field and I would have to start over. Once it took, I was off to the races.

Other Thoughts: I am setting it up with 4 1TB (WD Caviar Blue WD10EALS) and the initial volume creating with bad sector test will take like 5-6 hours (Status:Creating (Checking parity consistency. 45.69%) after 3hr 39min). So don't plan on loading it with data right away, unless you skip the bad sector test (not recommended). Once I have it in production, I will write more. So far, so good.
