5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great interface. Easy install. Highly flexible. Would buy again without hesitation.

Cons: Pricey when you consider the price of HDD to load it up, but you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: This is a top notch device. I am a home user using iSCSI and love the link aggregation ability offered by this model... great throughput.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy Setup

Pros: Setup was easy and Synology has great site for support and software/firmware updates. Active Directory Integration. Very flexible media and file sharing features.

Cons: None come to mind.

Other Thoughts: This is probably overkill for the average consumer but a great product for small business. We used it for our 25 users to place their email archives and personal files to relieve space on our Small business server.

5 out of 5 eggsOne server to rule them all

Pros: *small carbon foot print and form factor
*LARGE storage capacity for every flavor of RAID you can imagine
*built in BT functionality [downloading/seeding]
*quiet even under heavy load
*accepts multiple variations/flavors of HDD's
*extra Memory slot [Kingston 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)]
*fantastic GUI and great resources built into the interface for setup
*iPhone apps specifically designed for Synology servers
*encrypted remote file access
*scalable to 10 bays with DX510 [20 TB's!!]
*multiple networking protocols [FTP, SSH, iSCSI, Telnet]
*PHP/MySQL [web hosting]
*wake on LAN functionality
*surveillance station for IP cam
*Time Machine backup functionality for MAC
The list goes on and on....

Cons: *doesn't fold my laundry
*NOT Free
*option to purchase with drives installed would've been nice but let's be realistic you can get a much better deal buying drives separately

Other Thoughts: I've been eyeballing this server as the end all media solution for my home office and entertainment needs. Pulled the trigger finally at $799 and it's probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. The Synology box simply blows away the competition [Drobo, QNAP, Buffalo] in terms of price, features, ease of use, flexibility, functionality, etc.

I added the extra 2GB mem stick to the expansion slot for good measure; I use it as a file server, music/media streamer to my family's connected/wifi devices, Time Machine target for MacBook, also host pictures and blog. You can literally access your home network from anywhere with internet access!

*Looking into purchasing DX510 expansion box soon.

5 out of 5 eggsVery easy to set up

Pros: Great set up instuctions. Even so, not hard to set up at all! I will update this review once I evaluate performance.

Cons: No cons at all.

Other Thoughts: I also purchased from Newegg additional memory for this device (Kingston 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model KVR800D2S5/2G. ) It was a breeze to install.
I would definitely go to the Synology website and download the newest version of the setup assistant and firmware. Why not install the latest software first?

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING

Pros: THIS THING IS AWESOME! Purchased it, assembled it with 5 - Western Digital 2TB WD2003FWYYS Drives, added a KVR800D2S5/2G Ram upgrade, and fired it up. Everything went off without a hitch, I now have a nearly 6TB RAID5 array with hotspare, ready to rock. The web interface is AMAZING.

Cons: The drive carrriers could be better, but no big deal.
Setting up windows shares is annoying, but that is the nature of the beast.

Other Thoughts: NEWEGG ROCKS. i ordered at 12:30pm CDT, they had the entire setup in my hands the next morning at 10AM. (for only 85 buck shipping)

5 out of 5 eggsTruly a Thing of Beauty

Pros: 1. THE Fastest <$1000 NAS Box on the Market Today
2. More cool firmware features than you can imagine!!!
3. Dual-Gigabit Ethernet Links (Aggregation or Failover)
4. Expandable (via DX510) to 10 RAID Drives
5. Did I mention wicked fast read/write? (>100MB/sec)
6. Very low power consumption and hibernate mode
7. Stylish Black Cabinet and Clear Status Lightning
8. Excellent Web Based UI Interface (paritcularly 3.0)
9. Can Easily Saturate Gigabit Ethernet Up and/or Down
10. Controlled UPS Powerdown via USB Interface
11. USB Ports for Even MORE External Drive Expansion
12. Excellent User Community & Synology Website

Cons: Minor nit - 5 Plastic Drive Trays - Would have preferred something more sturdy and heat conductive.

Other Thoughts: Aside from Intel SSDs (for client side boot drives), best hardware purchase in years.

*** I just love my Synology NAS boxes. ***

5 out of 5 eggsSynology vs Drobo

Pros: Firmware, Firmware, Firmware!!! I havn't had one device that has had so many upgrades from firmware. My device now has EXT4!!! Hybrid Raid!!! Power On and Off!!! This Synology unit just flat out laughs at the Drobo. Offering double the speed and much much more features.

Cons: ... ... ... hum can't think of a single one.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing product

Pros: It's pretty amazing what this NAS accomplishes. Everything seems to work flawlessly. I havent found any bugs yet and this thing has so many features. I am very very impressed.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: extremely pleased with this. Hardware and software are excellent. Too often vendors dont spend enough work on the software, but software excels with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty impressed

Pros: Fast, quiet.

I use Seagate 1.5TB (ST3150054AS) drives at 5900rpm and get very good (50+ MB/sec or so) transfers when directly connected (via 1Gb ethernet) to my ESX box (using a vmdk on an iSCSI share - many layers involved there).

Cons: The drive trays do feel a little flimsy - time will tell.

Other Thoughts: I've not tried many of the features - I am using it for Time Machine backups via AFP and to host a few iSCSI targets.

I did upgrade the RAM, just because I had a space DDR2 SODIMM, the machine didn't seem too stressed otherwise.
