5 out of 5 eggsBest 400 bux I ever spent

Pros: Stable, easy to use, flexible. Synology keeps adding functionality to their device OS. It's just amazing.

Cons: None I can find

Other Thoughts: I would buy it again, I have recommended it to people who are also pleased with the device.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent NAS

Pros: Small, quiet and fast. Installed 2 Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB drives in a Raid 1 configuration.

Cons: Although the installation of base software is simple, but I found getting some of the other services not so straight-forward.

Other Thoughts: My first Synology product - very happy with it.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent NAS

Pros: I've had a DS209 at home for a year and decided to add one at the office and get the plus. This one is noticebly more robust than the 209. It integrated with AD nicely. I do software installs to PC's on the LAN from the device with no problems. The interface is very sophisticated and elegant but may be overwhelming to beginners.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I love Synology products. I've used several other brand name NAS devices and Synology's have been the best.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: Small compact, but powerful device. I wouldn't have chosen any other device. This system has all kinds of capabilities...with very little performace change with use of the services it offers. I heard slightly lower than advertised transfer rates which seems to be true, but could be an overall network infrastructure, not the device itself. Able to hook up external drives no problem interfacing with. Using with 2x 1TB WD RE3 drives. Remote capabilites unremarkable. Able to access from Blackberry, or Itouch. Would buy again!

Cons: Small problem with initial install...I think it was software and Win 7 conflict in beginning...had to restart process, but after that no problems.

Other Thoughts: DSM ver3.0 does seem to slow down response time, but not hard to get used to. Format of drives does take quite a while when selecting Synology Hybird RAID, but that could be the normal for their file system setup, not cofirmed that information with Synology.

5 out of 5 eggsDS210+ Perfect for Music Server

Pros: This unit is small, quiet, and fast. The Synology Assistant setup software was very straight forward to use, and I had the hard drives installed, a 1TB raid-1 volume built, and the NAS mounted on all three of my home computers in about 3 hours. Not bad. Synology provides a Squeezebox music server (downloadable from their website), that works.

Cons: No real complaints yet. I'm reaching a bit, but the max write speeds could be a bit faster. I'm getting a consistent write speed of 45 MB/sec, but the unit is spec'd at 55 MB/sec.

Other Thoughts: Just some extra info on my setup... I used 2x1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 drives, which I bought on Newegg for $75/each. I also bought an APC UPS (from Fr*'s, BN700G-CN) which worked perfectly with the built-in UPS feature.

I bought this unit so that I could mainly serve music to wifi enabled radio's in my house. I installed the Squeezebox server v7.5 from the Synology website, and my Squeezebox radio recognized it immediately. Not having to run a music/media server from a powered computer is awesome.

Just a bit of FYI to those that may want to buy this unit for serving music... If you use the Squeezebox server software from the Synology website, make sure to disable the feature that allows automatic software updates to be pushed to any connected Squeezebox radio's. It was a headache to figure out why the server software kept asking to install outdated software on my Squeezebox radio whenever I connected to the DS210+, but with this feature off everything works great!
