Designed for home- and small office use, the Synology DiskStation DS411slim comes in an ultra-compact size but delivers the ultimate solution for easy file sharing and backup. It provides low power consumption, quiet operation, reliability, and easy disk replacement. The operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager, delivers rich features for multimedia enjoyments, Internet sharing, worry-free data protection, and energy-saving options.

  • newegg Green, Quiet, and Reliable The Synology DS411slim is designed to work with 2.5-inch hard drives. The low power consumption of 2.5-inch hard drives will lower your electricity bill, as well as reduce your carbon footprint. In addition, 2.5-inch hard drives have reduced vibration, increased MTBF (mean time before failure), and shock tolerance. It not only extends the hard drive’s lifespan, but also provides better reliability. The smart fan design keeps the DS411slim’s fan off under normal operations, and spins at a very low speed only when needed, thus minimizing the noise level.
  • newegg Flexible RAID Management The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically builds an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed. It eliminates the need to have hard drives of an identical size, while still offering a manual setup option for advanced users.
  • newegg Cross-Platform File Sharing and Backup Synology DiskStation is designed for data storage and sharing among Windows, Mac, and Linux. Seamless file sharing across different operating systems is an easy process. Internet file access is simplified by the encrypted FTP server, the web-based File Browser, and File Station. HTTPS, firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level. The Synology DS411slim offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. PC Users can back up their data to the Synology DS411slim using the free Synology Data Replicator software, while Mac OS X users enjoy native Apple Time Machine integration. A web-based backup wizard is provided for backing up data in the Synology DS411slim to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted transmission, or to an external hard drive via USB or eSATA connection.
  • newegg Your Own Entertainment Center Download Station functions as a 24x7 BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule, and NZB download center without a PC. The eMule download engine allows search-n-download capability with a web-browser without installing additional desktop applications. Audio Station supports music, Internet radio stations, and iPod playback with the optional speakers. An optional direction-free Synology Remote allows you to freely enjoy your music. Streaming mode allows your music to be shared with multiple users over the Intranet or Internet. DLNA/UPnP Compliant Media Server allows you to stream multimedia files with an UPnP Digital Media Adapter (DMA) to a stereo system or a TV set. Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox360 are also supported. iTunes Server is an easy way to share music with other iTunes clients over the network. Password protection prevents unauthorized sharing.
  • newegg Eco Friendly Synology DiskStation is designed and developed perpetually with the concept of energy saving. Compared with average PC counterparts, Synology DiskStation consumes a relatively low amount of power and hibernates when not in use. This not only helps to save energy, but also extends the lifespan of the hard disk. Synology DiskStation truly earns the title of “green product” because of the unique Scheduled Power On/Off feature. Finally, all Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts, and are packed with recyclable packing materials.

4 out of 5 eggsNever looked back

Pros: I got this because i originally had a ready nas NV+ and needed a solution that had iscsi. I wanted to add a datastore to my ESXi server in my lab. This unit has far exceeded my expectations. I've had it for easily over 4 years and it has been running rock solid.

Cons: no redundant NICs. the iscsi permissions can be a bit annoying when rebooting devices. I have nested virtualization with ESXi and a dedicated LUN for my file server. I tried to lock it down allowing only the iscsi initiator of my file server (windows 2012) to connect to the LUN but everytime it boots the physical host connects to the LUN first even though I specified that I only want the file servers initiator to connect.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad

Pros: Decent transfer speed. simple setup.

Cons: Drives can get hot. Cooling fan is well place. Fan should be on top instead of bottom to exhaust hot air and pull cool air from bottom. Poor software, photostation and media add-ins cause will peg CPU to generate thumbnails.

5 out of 5 eggsWell Worth the money *update*

Pros: Getting about 25-40MB/s over the network write and 80-100MB/s read. Having no issues streaming to multiple devices and still loving all the feature that come with this amazing little box. Synology Hybrid RAID is amazing. was able to easily add two 1TB drives since original 4x500GB start up

Cons: Single core processor. Still very satisfied and worth the money

5 out of 5 eggsWell Worth the money

Pros: Wow this little box has some amazing extras and features, will diffidently take some time to go through them all. Very easy to set up and connect the different multimedia devices in my house too. Very small so i don't need to make extra room or hide the device and looks very slick. Transfer speeds good overall. Getting about 25-40MB/s over the network will continue to do some tweaking with the NAS and my router both new so still getting familiar. DSM is a beautiful and easy to use interface. Synology Hybrid Raid is amazing really glad i looked into it before i went with just regular RAID5 when setting up the NAS initially. 2 USB and ESATA nice to increase storage or move data

Cons: Not necessarly a con just something to keep in mind. I bought this unit knowing it only used 2.5in and am very happy i did, due to the very small size. only 2.5HDD so maximum capacity could be an issue and the 2.5 in drives are more expensive than same capacity 3.5 in drive

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent device

Pros: Small.
Awesome capacity per watt & cubic cm.
Excellent OS.

Cons: Some playback hiccups from iTunes, still sorting those out. May be related to HDD hibernation or to AirPlay, so no egg deductions.

Other Thoughts: No regrets!

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS411slim - Stout little guy

Pros: I absolutely love the size and features of this guy. I had four 500GB 2.5" drives laying around and this made excellent use of them! Synology DSM interface is just amazing. I connect to it from work and stream music/movies and internet radio all day long. You could almost use it as your own personal VDI (minus a web browser due to the resources that would require. You could use a text based browser :D ).

Cons: The only major con I have found is with 'Download Station', which is the installable BitTorrect client that runs on the unit. It does not support proxies preventing you from using such services as BTGuard. You can install 3rd party application (such as Transmission) but the interface for those is very lacking. You will still have to have a download machine if you want to use a proxy.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic NAS for the price

Pros: Out of this box, this device was a breeze to setup. Fast, easy, works like a champ on the first try.

Very stable, more features then most users will ever need. I've got experience with the larger Synology units at a local Dojo running their streaming media, photo library, VPN, security cams, etc. Worked so well, I bought this smaller version for home. I must say, I can't tell any performance difference between mine and theirs, other then the footprint, quietness, and power savings.

Over the past few days I've migrated all my videos off my Windows 7 box onto this using the media packages. I can connect from my 60" Sharp LCD every time with flawless playback. I just tried the free Synology iOS app for the Video streaming. Watched a movie on the iPhone from the Synology on the first try. Windows had served media when configured for a few hours, then never again and was a disaster to set-up. Synology has this licked.

Migrating the photos and iTunes over now. Data management is a breeze.

Also activated Time Machine for backups to my MacBook. Worked on the first try. How much easier can it get?

It does what I want and more, offers expansion options for the hot drives and external, and a ton of free software that works on the first pass.

What can I say other then it works every time, it's stable, it's expandable both hardware and software wise. Best device in this price range I've seen/used to date!

Cons: Every device has a con for some user. Not trying to play this up too much, but this one doesn't seem to have a con for me yet. I'll post it if I find it.

If you forced me to pick something, I'd only say that there are 2 media options without much clarity as to which to use, so it can be confusing. The Video Station, which appears newer as it supports auto-cataloging, works well, but needs a little more tuning. It works, but takes some manual experiments to understand and appreciate it.

Other Thoughts: Out of this box, this device was a breeze to setup. Insert the new drives, plug in the LAN, plug in the power, power it up, install the software on the CD to discover it, then download and install the latest firmware. Fast, easy, works like a champ on the first try.

Home network is Gigabit, switched on 24-port Netgear managed switch, Buffalo router with wifi.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS!

Pros: Small size, 4 bays, nice RAID options, very feature rich device!

Cons: Price...its a hair on the expensive side.

Other Thoughts: Have only had this unit for a short time, but its impressive so far. There is an installable software package for almost anything you can think of doing with it. Great RAID options. I am just waiting for 2 more drive so I can set it up the way I want. It was worth the money to me and I would consider even buying another one without hesitation.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Upgrade ever

Pros: Speed.
Upgrade disk size what ever i want.
My setting is
all 4 2.5" drive 750gb 72rpm HD.
but next couple month i am planning to upgrade to all 4 750GB SSD for having for best speed and less heat.

Cons: none.

But must read and have little research first if you are not a tech guy.

Setup process is little hard.

Other Thoughts: Best NAS ever.

5 out of 5 eggsJust set it, and forget it!

Pros: This device paired with a good desktop synchronization service like Allway Sync will keep your files protected and share-able across a home network. Stop worrying about your files, buy once and never cry about lost files again.

Cons: none
