5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: I have used all the major manufacture's NAS, D link, Buffalo, Seagate, Western Digital etc.

For ease of use, and the VERY simple interface for EU. Quick set up etc. A lot of available apps including AV suite for the NAS box (based on Clam AV) These will be a great fit for home use or small biz. There are other cheaper units but honestly there is a reason why these units have such a great rating you will not be disappointed.

Cons: A little more than some but WELL worth it.

Other Thoughts: For the most part I am done trying different companies and will be sticking with this company!!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsWorking Great, better manual needed

Pros: Was easy to setup with 2x 2TB hitachi Deskstar drives for a mirrored back up system. It is working very well for me as a back up system. It does that well and more.

Cons: It took a bit of reading to verify to my understanding that the default way this gets setup when you have 2 drives in it is actually a mirrored backup.

I don't know why these things have to cost as much as a PC when you want to get a good one. Maybe its because it does have some good processing power and built in software capabilities which makes setting things up easy.

Other Thoughts: I choose the 2TB Hitachi GST Deskstar 7K3000 because the expert reviews I read said they were well built. So far they are working fine. I am very satisfied with this system.

5 out of 5 eggsWell balanced NAS

Pros: I have two Samsung 2TB green drives (HD204UI) in this NAS in RAID 1 as well as a third drive (same type) external to the NAS connected occasionally over eSATA for secondary backup purposes. The feature set, performance, and relatively low power draw of this NAS for a low price is quite amazing.

Even with low power drives in RAID 1 this unit can clear 80MB/s. I suspect in RAID 0 this NAS could easily achieve 120MB/s. While the unit is being accessed it consumes around 35W (including drives). It also supports UPS integration, I have a Cyberpower UPS connect to it over USB and it works like a charm.

I'm a happy camper with this NAS and if I ever buy another NAS in the future it'll be a Synology unit!

Cons: Was waking up from low power mode at random times, see other thoughts for workaround.

Other Thoughts: One thing that I noticed with this unit was that it was starting up randomly out of low power mode. I worked with the Synology tech support and came to the conclusion the best way to stop this behavior is to go into the NAS firewall settings and block ports 137-139 (NetBIOS). Since then it only comes out of low power mode when I go to access it.

1 out of 5 eggsNo NAS

Pros: With no fan running, it shut down automatically when my brand new drives overheated.

Cons: Should not spin drives up if fan does not operate. Fan would not spin up. Opened the case and a small piece of plastic came out which was not from any hard drive connector.

Returned the entire shipment drives and all for a refund.

Other Thoughts: Manufacturer doesn't put any packing in the box with this unit. It must have taken some abuse and reseller packing materials are wadded paper.

5 out of 5 eggsEverything I expected

Pros: Easy basic setup
Active development of the NAS software and packages
Third party packages available
Active support in the Synology Forums
Ability to do advanced configuration/tweaking

Cons: None I have observed

Other Thoughts: If you just want a NAS for storage and no other features, this may be too much for you. I chose this one over all others because I specifically wanted the mail server, the photo station, the S3 backup option, etc.

Also, I would recommend that you visit the Synology website and try the online demo of the DSM software.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Product

Pros: I absolutely love this product. It is extremely fast, especially compared to other products such as the Western Digital Live Duo. While this is a tad more expensive (I paid $429 directly through Synology) it is definitely worth the money. I have a small computer store and constantly have multiple computers uploading/downloading to it and with link aggregation this thing is a champ.

Cons: Price. This thing costs as much as the Western Digital Live Duo does, but doesn't include the drives! It's not really a con though because you get to pick your own hard drives and the western digital green drives are junk anyways.

Other Thoughts: If you can afford it, but it. I also had the 212+ but the whole overall performance on this one is better. Here is a link to the performance chart between the models: http://www.synology.com/products/performance.php?lang=enu#tabs-2

5 out of 5 eggsOne Awesome NAS

Pros: Super fast
Ability to use almost any hard drive with the NAS
Great GUI
Easy to set up and configure

Cons: None, maybe the price

Other Thoughts: This is the best NAS I have ever used. I am coming from a Buffalo Terastation III. This blows it away. With Buffalo you cannot chage the drives to larger ones (not recommended by Buffalo) and the 712+ is significantly faster. A backup that used to take about 30 minutes is now taking about 6 minutes. I can't belive how much faster this NAS is. Very recommended.

5 out of 5 eggsDS712+ is doing Great!

Pros: So far 1 month & running well with Raid-1 with 2 Seagate 2TB drives. This NAS is fast even with one core.
When monitoring nine cameras with surveillance station, cpu=16% memory=20% network=1500Mbps.
Almost all of the cameras are running at 640x480 @ 4fps with 7 days of retention.
Works well with Linksys & Cisco cameras.

This unit can monitor 16 cams, and it has plenty of power to do so unlike a stand alone pc running software.
The DS712 is far faster than the dual-core 2.4ghz 2GB cpu I was using before with software.

If you run this on a gigabit network (HP Procurve), the throughput is almost hard to believe. The first backup I did stayed between 420mbps to 460mbps while the unit was monitoring 9 cameras. Wow... If doing a backups on this, stagger them so they all don't hit the unit at once. It could handle it, but actual backups would be slower.

One more: Awesome...

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: This is my 5 NAS. Previous: Synology 211, Linksys, Buffalo, WD. This is a powerful piece of hardware. Check out the Synology website if interested in all the apps available. Very powerful platform. A lot of people brag about creating servers of old desktops. Just buy one of these and be up and running quickly with a wide range of apps & RAID.

Surveillance station is much better than anything else I found in the camera monitoring arena. It is solid and has enough features and record modes that can be varied depending on camera type. Surveillance station can digest info & formats from over 1000 cams so you are not "stuck with" a piece of software from the camera manufacture and cams from different companies can be mixed.

The outside of this machine is a work of art. It looks great!

5 out of 5 eggsDS712+...EXCELLENT!!!

Pros: Fast, easy to set up, excellent product!

Cons: None other than USB 3.0 should have been added in this current year as in the DS212+

Other Thoughts: Newegg provides excellent service,

5 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely wonderful!

Pros: Fast. Easy to configure.

Cons: None that I can think of. You need to set a log-in password in Windows 7 in order to be able to access the drives. Once I discovered this, the transition was easy.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replaced a peer-to-peer file server for my wife's office. I read the reviews and based on them, I bought this unit. I have not been disappointed. It has been easy to configure. You need a unit that has built in processor for access speed. The cheaper units don't have built-in processors.
