5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS 212

Pros: This is an excellent NAS Box. I bought it primarily. For file storage, remote access via other pc's and our smart phones. It does all that and does it well. You can be up and running in a few minutes. Just don't do what I did and load up all the available apps until your familiar with it, this thing does allot but get familar with the basics of what you need before you and apps and make the learning curve, but too long. From experience all the apps seem to run well but keep it simple before you go into some of the advanced apps. I Ended up reseting, wiping it and starting over, just got over my head a bit. I'm a custom PC builder but not a network guru. So take you time with it and you'll be pleased.

Cons: Not really a con but, Pehaps to many features, don't. Load them all until
familar with the standard apps!
It takes some time to dump all your fils onto it, but I only have a 100mb router, but it seems to throttle down and runs in the background and doesn't bog you down to much

Other Thoughts: I installed. 2X 2Tb Samsung Eco Green F4 ST2000DL 004 32Mb cache SATA 3 drives since I run it 24/7 They spin down and wake on access in a resonable amount of time 3-5 seconds.

5 out of 5 eggsFreaking AWESOME!!!

Pros: The Synology is easily the coolest tech purchase I've made in years. I'm able to consolidate my data in one place versus on different systems in the house and I sleep a lot better knowing it's backed up offsite as well. It also works well serving the movies up across my network and also allows me to access everything when I'm not on my network.
It's whisper quite and very fast. The software that runs it is so simple to use. I'd suggest going to Synology and looking for the demo. That's what sold me. In short, you can add "packages" to the server as easily as you add programs to your cell phone for added functionality. This tailors the unit to what you need it to do for you.

Cons: None. ZERO buyer's remorse.

Other Thoughts: We've all been with computers for a long time. If you're like me, your data was a mess. Getting the Synology helped me put the data in one central place. It's made life easier and will make my next upgrade easier too as I won't have to worry about having everything all backed up.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Unit!

Pros: Very nice user interface! This is my first NAS and bought this model based on combination of price and positive reviews (both here and the usual web sources). The OS is very usable and I love all of the included applications. The Logitech server is cool because I have several Squeezeboxes in the house. Setting up RAID and also a backup schedule to external HD was super easy. I also love the auto email alerts to let me know that my backup completed successfully or that there is a new version of one of the applications available for download.

Cons: Deducted a single egg because unfortunately mine died with a bad motherboard just about 3 weeks into using it - right after I got all of my stuff organzied the way I like it. I worked directly with Synology support and found them to be very helpful. I wound up RMA'ing it back to them and they had an advanced exchange unit in my hands in just a few days. Instuctions on the Synology website helped me get my new unit up and running without losing any of the data on my drives.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat device if you ship it right

Pros: Guys, these synology devices are awesome. If you got it DOA, I have to ask what sort of shipping you used. UPS for example plainly states your package must be able to withstand up to a six foot drop. Anything breakable use Fed Ex. Other stuff like memory or flash drives use UPS.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsSynology NAS is great

Pros: - DSM 4.1

Cons: The whole unit is built out of plastic. The built quality is really not that great. I purchased my from a local computer store as they offer a great price-beat program. The Ethernet port at the back is flimsy.

Other Thoughts: I'm using my for Audio station, Video station, PPTP VPN, Cloud station. It's been working great for the past week.

5 out of 5 eggsBought 4 units, all work perfect + good support

Pros: For great home entertainment use AND for any small business, great product line! I have purchased 4 of these units over the years (several models). One for my own home use, and three for businesses.

Home use consists of file backup & file sharing with 4 computers. We also have three iPhones in my family and can listen to our entire music collection from anywhere using the DS Audio iPhone app, no need to take up space on our phones.

Small Business Use: Three of these units are setup as your regular old NAS backup solution for servers and workstations. Although, two of these units also run the Surveillance Station app with full control of multiple pan/tilt/zoom IP cameras. The surveillance station stores the video footage, provides a historical view, and a current live view of all cameras from any web browser with SSL and password. Synology also has a DS Cam iPhone app that works great for checking footage after I get an email alert from the DS.

Cons: My only gripe would be having to pay a license fee for adding more than one IP camera to the surveillance station. They give you 1 license free, then you have to pay $50 for each additional. I think this limit should be removed or at least increased to maybe 4 free licenses. For a small business, its yet another couple hundred $$ added on to the the DS unit, hard drives, cameras, and PoE switches already purchased.

Other Thoughts: It just hurts me to see this product having a couple bad reviews and not enough good ones to back it up!

I have called and emailed Synology many times with questions and sometimes just to brainstorm planning ideas for clients. They are always professional and prompt, not sure why others said otherwise?...

5 out of 5 eggsTo the user "blove" below

Pros: I own the 212 but just want to write back about the guy's review below.

Cons: Absolutely nothing. Does everything I could ever want and more.

Other Thoughts: All you need to do is add an index.html or php file in the root directory of the "web" shared folder that the web service creates. You can use this file to make a redirect to any other site on the web. For any other sites you want to create just add virtual hosts in the web service control panel or use the home/www setting.

If you ever decide that you want port 80 to redirect back to port 5000, just remove the index file.

Easy peasy.

4 out of 5 eggsit's ok

Pros: Very good hardware. Excellent interface. Allows terminal access.

Cons: When you hit the diskstation web URL (default port 80) it forwards you to port 5000 automatically because that's where the web UI is running... this is all fine and dandy unless you are running your own web server off of it... I want port 80 to say "forget it" when hit from the outside world, but there is NO way to disable the forwarding to port 5000... so even though my firewall prevents the outside world from seeing the Synology web UI, the automatic port forwarding still makes it very clear that I'm running a synology diskstation, which gives hackers a huge advantage. In 3 weeks Synology has not responded to my service request... I'm super disappointed in their support (which is half the reason I bought this thing).

Other Thoughts: Luckily I don't really need that much support, as I'm already very familiar with *nix systems. DO NOT get this toy if you think you might need tech support... but if you just want an awesome platform to play with, go for it.

1 out of 5 eggsArrived with a DOA fan and Constant Beeping

Pros: Awesome features and fairly easy to configure

Cons: Arrived DOA. The fan failed, and the unit constantly beeped. I'm waiting on a replacement now. NOTE: NewEgg promptly issued an RMA; however, I've yet to hear anything from Synology. I emailed them at the same time and have heard nothing.

Other Thoughts: I hope the next one works, as I really want to like this device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: Easy to set up and install.
Great GUI.
Ability to use high speed HDs of almost any manufacturer.

Cons: The price.

Other Thoughts: This is a great NAS. I am using it to replace a Buffalo unit that I have had for some time. The Buffalo is good but this one is great. I liked the fact that I could use just about any hard drive I wanted in this unit. I got it up and running in a few minutes and love the GUI. I could probably spend hours just learning and trying all the great features. I just wish it was less expensive.
