5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive, simple, effective, Great for Apple/Mac Environments

Pros: Simple, fast, effective, works well with Apple & Mac. I was in the IT sector for ten years until I got my Masters. When I switched to Mac I thought compatibility would be an issue - it isn't. Synology did a great job designing their products to work with Apple products, including AFP. Allowing Windows and Macs (OS X) to access files using their native network protocols is a great feature. The DS212J also uses CIFS (SMB/Microsoft), FTP, iSCSI, Telnet, SSH, NFS, SNMP, WebDAV, CalDAV

Cons: The user interface can be a *bit* cumbersome to navigate, but it is no worse than any Linux distort I have used.

Other Thoughts: Perfect for a small office.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware!

Pros: Ease of use/setup.

Cons: Speed. Quality. Performance.

Other Thoughts: Sorry for the long post, but here it goes...

I have two DS212J. The main DiskStation is serial #xxxxxxxxxx, which has two 3TB hard disks (Model # WD30EFRX-68EUZN0).

The second DiskStation is serial #xxxxxxxxxx, which has two 2TB hard disks (Model # ST2000DM001). This disk station serves as the backup drive to the Main DiskStation.

Both units are plugged their own Gigabit Switch, (TL-SG108) with 3ft of cat 6 each.

I have been in contact with Synology (America), and I have had a trouble ticket (#xxxxxx), open and it remains unresolved.

I have complied with all troubleshooting requests, to the best of my abilities. To name a few things completed, I have submitted numerous Debug Logs, I have completed numerous tests, I have purchased a new gigabit switch (the tl-sg108) to rule out hardware issues, and I have purchased all new CAT6 cables.

Transfer speed between DiskStations are still running 1MBps to 10MBps. This is when transfering (a test file 2.5gb, as well as a test file 3.5gb).

My experience with Synology Products is becoming a major, as well as very expensive, disappointment!

At first Synology representatives were concerned with the issue, they even verified that the speeds I am experiencing are abnormal. However, as time passed, they started coming up with excuses... Now, they are telling me that the issues that I am experiencing are normal.

The major problem that I have with this determination is that I have had my DiskStations for 1 year. Over the period of a year, I have never had any issues with speed until recently. So, for them to say that this is "normal", is a joke, to say the least.

I attempted one last contact today, January 15, 2014, in hopes of resolution. I was met with a rude/ smart alec, manager named Mathew. He stated that my speed issues are limited to the hardware that is in the DiskStations. I once again informed Synology, that I have had no issues until recently, so it must be a hardware failure or software issue (Synology has ruled out all other possible causes). Mathew followed with a smart remark about me needing to replace the product then, and how they were going to close my ticket. He stated that I would no longer receive support for the products I own.

Once again, my DiskStations were working at a much higher speed (transfers at 20-30MBps) than they currently are (1-10MBps).

Synology is now refusing to take ownership of the issue.

I am extremely disappointed with how Synology has responded thus far, as I have spent quite a lot of money for the systems, and the new equipment needed for troubleshooting.

Buyer beware! This product works for a while, and then stops. Synology does nothing to resolve the problem. I have sent complaints to BBB, as well as Synology America, and the Synology World Headquarters in Taiwan.

Pros: 2 slots, fires right up with 1 or 2 drives in it. easy to use web management interface

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: lots of plugins to get extra functionality. i haven't had much luck setting up the dlna server as i would like, but that's just a matter of me learning what different options there are and how to configure them

4 out of 5 eggsSolid NAS

Pros: Excellent simple two disk/Raid NAS. I upgrade to Synology because of the comments on it and I agree its great compared to the Buffalo Linkstation QUAD that I purchased some years ago and the UI was no longer functional. On the DS212J I installed 500G Samsung HD502j that was in Linkstation Quad formatted the disk and copied over from the Linkstation the backup sets I had. it worked. Set it up for dual disks RAID. Then plugged in new 2T Western Digital Red WD20EFRX and it transferred over mirrored the data. Then put that as the main disk and plugged in a 2nd 2T disk and expanded the disk to 2T with the dual RAID function
Figuring out which HD where likely to work was the highest risk.
Also purchased a 2nd DS212J as they have so much data that for management I use one as a store on my intranetwork, and the other as a back up unit that only turns on for a couple of hours.
The web/intranet interface works for me - though still a learning curve to figure out how to manage the DS212K

Cons: The web interface with underlying linux has a lot of possibilities, but they don't tie together very well as a feature set at the UI level
A lot of possible applications also possible, and spent far too long on trying them and then booting them. The underlying processor is very slow. Needs carfeull thought as to what is really needed.

Other Thoughts: NAS backup. Guaranteeing and managing the large data sets is a time consuming headache. Raid is a must for hardware reliability. I had a decaying Buffalo Linkstation 4 disk quad, and the issue was managing an upgrade - and two different NAS units each with two disks gives more management opportunities that a single NAS.
DS212j: It could be really nice to have a section somewhere of what works easyly - app notes - though since there is such a range of Synology equipment it would be like minded people who would post their success stories about it

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good NAS

Pros: I don't have much experience with NAS but am really impressed with this Synology unit. I popped in my drives, plugged into my router and I was off to the races.

There's also a plethora of plugins to install. Some of them are quite useful.

Cons: Set up was a little tricky. I do need to spend more time learning about all the functions, but I have had trouble getting some things to work. That basics are fine, but I'm talking about phone access, the extras.

It is sometimes a bit slow if I'm doing some heavy lifting. But I have a theory it is the computer, and specifically Windows 8.

Other Thoughts: Like I mentioned above, this is my first NAS. I use it as a way to store all my data to access from any of my computers.

There's a few little bumps here and there, but I would certainly buy this again.

5 out of 5 eggsLOVE IT!!!

Pros: Handles all my streaming at home. Have no issues streaming to my iPhone through 3G/4G/LTE. Can access NAS from DLNA devices and idevices. Great apps for idevices. OS for NAS is great. OS and software packages get new updates. NAS offers Airplay and bluetooth with bluetooth adaptor.

Cons: Not cheap but great example of you get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS that was easy

Pros: This is my first NAS for my home network. It went in easy, worked as advertised. I used two 3TB drives and have tons of space for my backups and music. Finally a single, redundant (raid 1) storage area so I don't have to shuffle stuff between different PC's on my home network.

Cons: Was there a quick start guide somewhere in all the online help/documentation? I just figured it out but that would help.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: very inexpensive for the performance its delivering.

Cons: the fans are so quiet we forget its there.

Other Thoughts: Before i used it at all i downloaded the newest OS from Synology and flashed that on during the initial setup process, i put it together with 2 Western Digital Green drives that i had but i really need to switch up to the Red Drives to push the performance up even more.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for simple NAS use

Pros: Redundancy, Ships Fast, Quiet, Great Interface

Cons: Upgrade to DSM 4.2 or 4.3 Immediately Unless You Love Hitting your Head Against a Wall, Can Get Pretty Hot

Other Thoughts: I bought this with a single 7200RPM 1TB drive to test drive it out for a office NAS. Pretty easy to setup. Joins and pulls domain users very easily and rather quickly if you need to throw it into a domain environment.

I threw an external 1TB drive on this thing back when I first got it (March 2013). The box would shut down from time to time and I would have to constantly keep an eye on the uptime. I decided to upgrade the firmware to 4.2, started performing better. I would log in every now and again to find a lovely 25+ day uptime before I power it powercycle it.

Upgraded to 4.3 7 days ago, it is still running fine. Even purchased a second 1TB drive for the second drive bay for redundancy.

In my experience, use this device for what you bought it for. Don't get all crazy with the cheese-wiz and have it run your firewall/streaming/vpm/nas..... thats just silly.

If I were using it personally, I might play around with it a bit more, but my users really depend on it. So it is a redundant NAS that is very reliable and pretty fast.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic media server

Pros: Had this up and running 24/7 for over a year mainly as a media server with 2 2TB green drives in RAID0. Family members use the iOS and Android apps, as well as Windows, to stream mostly music but also some 1080P video. Low power draw. Get about 8 MBytes/sec read and write over 5 GHz WiFi, a bit more over 1 GB wired. Case goes together nicely and installing drives is pretty simple. NAS admin interface has some quirks but is pretty easy to figure out. Has a ton more features I have not used.

Cons: Plastic case probably won't take a lot of abuse: so don't whack it.

Other Thoughts: Had a drive going out (detected before it failed thanks to SMART), swapped in a new drive and no data loss after quick rebuild. Apps for iOS and Android work well and are frequently updated. Status lights are useful.
