Synology DiskStation DS1812+ offers a high-performance, scalable, and full-featured network attached storage solution that meets the needs of small and medium-sized businesses that require an efficient way to centralize data protection, simplify data management, and rapidly scale storage capacity with minimal time spent on setup and management.

  • newegg High Performance, High Data Availability With the Link Aggregation enabled, Synology DS1812+ delivers an average 194.48 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 202.20 MB/sec reading. Coming with USB 3.0 support which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, namely 10 times faster than USB 2.0, DS1812+ takes less time for data transfer for external hard drives and consumes less power. Synology DS1812+ brings you the high performance that your data-intensive applications demand for a storage system, and offers the ability to scale the storage capacity.
  • newegg High Reliability Synology DS1812+ is now introduced with the fanless CPU heatsink to prevent the single point of failure. With the CPU passive cooling technology, Synology DS1812+ achieves the high reliability system design. When one of your system fans malfunctions, the built-in system fan redundancy mechanism can extend service uptime by keeping the remaining fan running and your DS1812+ performing basic operations until the replacement fan arrives. The 2 LAN with failover support and hot-swappable drives will ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement or the unexpected LAN failure occurs.
  • newegg Robust & Affordable Scalability Up to 72TB When the storage capacity of the Synology DS1812+ is nearing its limits, it can easily be expanded with the Synology DX5102. The Synology DX510 securely connects to the Synology DS1812+ via an eSATA cable of specially-designed connectors on both ends to ensure maximum throughput. The Synology DX510 can directly expand the existing storage on the Synology DS1812+ to a maximum 72TB capacity.
  • newegg Unified-Architecture and Virtualization Ready Synology DS1812+ runs on the novel operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which integrates file-level and block-level storage in one unified storage system. Comprehensive network protocol support (CIFS/SMB, AFP and NFS) assures seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Affordable and cost-effective iSCSI is also supported allowing large scale business to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks. With the iSCSI support, DS1812+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Citrix, and Hyper-V. Thin Provisioning is available for file-level iSCSI, enabling administrators to oversubscribe provision and then grow storage space as needed in safety.
  • newegg Full-featured Business Applications The operation system Synology DSM offers applications and features designed specifically for SMBs. Directory Server package can turn DS1812+ into an LDAP-based directory server within minutes. Windows ACL support on DS1812+ provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing IT staffs to set up privileges to files and folders on DS1812+ through their familiar Windows user interface. Internet file access is simplified with the included encrypted FTP server and the web-based file explorer, Synology File Station. HTTPS, the built-in firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level.A wealth of additional features allows the Synology DS1812+ to replace several pieces of network hardware including Synology Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL, Synology Surveillance Station, built-in mail server and USB printer sharing capability.
  • newegg Energy Efficient Design Synology DiskStation are designed and developed with energy efficiency in mind. Compared with the average PC counterparts, Synology DS1812+ consumes only 50.6 watts in operation. The support of wake on LAN, scheduled power on/off and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation cost.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS, SAN, this does it all

Pros: SAN functionality for my ESX Host and HyperV Host test lab in the home

NAS functionality for LAN shares (install software)

Decent performance - haven't been disaapointed at all.

Cons: Honestly, nothing that I've considered something that I would have expected in a $1000 device isn't built-in.

Other Thoughts: I use this for my HTPC to host up Blu-Ray ISOs and it does a great job.

I also use it as a SAN for my ESX and HyperV hosts in my in-home test lab and it does a great job. I actually run both simultaneously by using separate NICs for each function and it does the job without noticeable performance degradation. For a home device, it's perfect, utilizing inexpensive SATA drives in a hot-swap configuration, allowing me to add drives on the fly without powering it down.

In all honesty, I couldn't be happier with the device at this point. I'm very likely to buy another Synology device when I finally decide to upgrade this to something faster.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent NAS box

Pros: Very quiet running. Nice web interface with tons of options and features, very intuitive. Multi-platform support. Case feels solid.

Cons: Slow building; I added two 4TB drives to my existing 3-drive (same make/model 4TB drives) RAID-5 array. It took roughly 36 hours before all new space was available.

The hard drive caddies/sleds are plastic and feel very cheap and flimsy. They do not eject cleanly which makes me feel like they'll break if removed often.

Other Thoughts: The status LED shows if there's an error state. However, if you can't access the web interface there's no telling what the error is. In this case and external LCD would be helpful.

Seems a little pricey for what it is.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: I have 6x1.5tb drives setup in a traditional RAID6 config. Easily maxes out GigE speeds both uploading and downloading. I love the built in applications and network integrations. A++

Cons: Not for novice users looking to plug and play

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Failed out of the box. No way to get quick tech support from Synology for troubleshooting and basic install questions.

Other Thoughts: If you've got days to devote to setting this up, it might work. Who knows.

4 out of 5 eggsThe Swiss Army Knife NAS

Pros: DiskStation 1812+ - 8 x 3TB WD NAS Red SATA Drives. RAID 10 - 2 Volumes.

We use our DiskStation 24/7 for Windows shares on one volume and as a VMware Data Protection appliance on another iSCSI volume. Out of the box we upgraded the NAS from 1GB to 3GB RAM as we felt the standard RAM wasn't enough for our purposes so I can't talk about performance difference but I will say in a 3GB configuration, the NAS is fast enough for everything our users throw at it. We used DSM 4.2 initially but upgraded to 4.3 when we had a problem mounting a Seagate 4TB external USB drive and 4.3 solved the issue. So far we are very happy with the purchase.

Cons: Tech Support is slow to answer and then they give you a generic response.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome NAS Mostly Deserves Premium Price

Pros: This NAS is a great file / web / media server - it fills all roles almost perfectly.

Management is easy through its web interface. This is the only real interface to the device other than SSH, which has to be enabled.

Hot-swappable drives are a very nice feature. Management of drives is quite easy, and expanding the array is easy, especially when using their proprietary RAID system.

Cons: The only problem I have had is streaming very high-quality HD video through Plex Media Server. This is a combination of problems with Plex as well as the fact that for the price, this is quite underpowered with only an Intel Atom underneath. So, anything that Plex deems to require transcoding will max out the CPU and there's nothing you can do about it. I took off an egg for this - it's just the price / performance problem.

Other Thoughts: I have played with the Plex settings and more recent versions are more intelligent on what it simply transfers the streams for and what it transcodes.

If this had a little more powerful CPU - maybe even a laptop version of an i3 or something, this would be well worth the money. Without this extra power, I do feel like the $800 I got it for was just a little too much.

I do wish the web interface was more like remote desktop. If I accidentally close that tab, where I was at was lost, unfortunately.

IP surveillance camera interface is only free for one camera. Any more requires purchasing licenses, unfortunately.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected

Pros: - Ridiculous amounts of settings
- Clean & Simple UI
- Stable
- Responsive
- PERL!!!
- Easy to setup, and use.

Cons: Minor gripes:
- DS Video needs more options (Shuffle, and play through, audio boost, etc, ability to remove home video section)
- Terminal access from within the disk station web GUI
- Needs ability to reset factory defaults on OS without affecting Volume Data....
- Expensive
-Took me a long time to figure out why my Perl scripts weren't running... make sure you change your FTP settings to allow ASCII transfer support, I have no idea why it wasn't checked by default...

Other Thoughts: I had heard good things about this device, but you really can't grasp how awesome it is until you own it. I am currently running a web server, SFTP, and streaming video throughout my house. I haven't maxed out the CPU or ram usage... however I haven't tried to stream to more than one client at a time yet.... I'm curious if DS video could handle that load.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I've been using the DS1812+ for over a year now and have had no problems whatsoever with this product. I was nervous about performing an upgrade of the DiskStation Manager (DSM) software (to 4.3) because I've had bad luck with software upgrades with other products, i.e. iOS upgrade on my Apple devices always seem to break something, like the wireless on my iPhone & iPad. But I was extremely pleased that performing the DSM software upgrade went flawlessly and all 6TB of my data is just fine.

What I like most about the DSM software (4.3) is the Video Station Package. It indexes all of my movies and goes out and gets the movie poster, date, cast, summary, amongst other details of the film, think of it like what you see on an IMDb page. I used to do that with a separate program on my laptop but now the DiskStation does it for me.

I'm using 1TB Western Digital Green hard drives but I am in the process of upgrading to 4TB WD Enterprise drives (got 2 so far, also bought from Newegg). The DS 1812+ supports Hot Swap so I pulled out one of the old 1TB drives and replaced it with one of my new 4TB drives. The DiskStation started beeping (to alert me that the volume was degraded because of the drive I pulled out) and then after I installed the new hard drive it immediately started rebuilding my data. It sent me an email to let me know what happened and also informed me of when it had finished. The process was uncomplicated and it just plain worked, which is what you want in a NAS server.

In my experience, the Customer Service was exceptional. After I received my new drives from Newegg, I was eager to install the first one but realized I didn't know where the key to unlock the drive bays was. After many hours of tearing up my place in the search for the keys (which I never found) I emailed Synology before I went to bed to inquire about replacement keys. When I woke up, I had an email from a Synology Rep saying they will replace my keys at no cost, all they needed was a copy of the invoice which I was able to get from my Newegg account and send to them before I went to work. When I came home from work I had another email in my inbox saying they had mailed me the keys and gave me the USPS tracking number. Wow!

Previous to purchasing the DS1812+ I used to store my data on external USB hard drives. I can't tell you how many Terabytes of data I've lost due to failed drives. I finally gave up on that madness and started researching NAS Servers. I'm in the tech business and talked to a lot of my peers and the recommendation that kept coming up was Synology. Don't let the price scare you, I saved for a while to get mine and I can tell you that knowing my data is safe is worth every penny. I am truly one satisfied customer.

Cons: I can't think of any cons for this product. The only con is that the DS1812+ can do much more but that is a con on me for not getting to know the DSM better. But I can say that it does what I expect it to do and it does it well.

Other Thoughts: I use Synology's Hybrid RAID (SHR). It allows me to upgrade at my own pace rather than with traditional RAID in which you have to purchase the larger drives up front before the RAID will utilize all of the available space in the volume. With SHR, I can purchase the larger drives when I can afford them and the RAID will utilize the available capacity of the larger drive even though the drive sizes in the volume are not the same.

5 out of 5 eggsgood drives

Pros: Cheap price when on sale

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: Bought 9 of these. 8 in a ds1812+, one as a spare. These drives are listed as compatible desktop drives for the ds1812+. All drives working without issues for the past 2-3 months. the drives were also tested in a Sans digital 5bay raid tower and worked well. The DS is happy. So am I.
