The Synology DS1512+ Five-Bay Diskless System is a high-performance, cost-effective, network-attached storage solution specifically designed for small- and medium-sized businesses. A Dual Core processor, an abundant amount of memory, and two Gigabit LAN ports enable an ultra- smooth, lag-free response, while SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports and eSATA ports allow instant, lightning-fast storage expansion. Running on the renowned operation system Synology DSM, and featuring an abundance of applications and features, this system provides an efficient way to centralize data protection, simplify data management, and rapidly scale storage capacity with minimal time required for setup and management. Complete with the high reliability and stability Synology is renowned for, you can rest assured that your business will be performing at top efficiency with minimized issues and maximized up time.

  • newegg High Performance, High Data Availability With the Link Aggregation enabled, Synology DS1512+ delivers an average 194.83 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 200.31 MB/sec reading1. Coming with USB 3.0 support – which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, namely 10 times faster than USB 2.0 – DS1512+ takes less time for data transfer for external hard drives and consumes less power. Synology DS1512+ brings you the high performance that your data-intensive applications demand for a storage system, and offers the ability to scale the storage capacity.
  • newegg High Reliability Reliable functioning of commercial systems is of paramount concern to business users who depend on these servers every day. Synology DS1512+ is now introduced with a fanless CPU heatsink to prevent the single point of failure. With the CPU passive cooling technology, Synology DS1512+ achieves the high reliability system design. When one of your system fans malfunctions, the built-in system fan redundancy mechanism can extend service uptime by keeping the remaining fan running and your DS1512+ performing basic operations until the replacement fan arrives. The 2 LAN with failover support and hot-swappable drives will ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement or the unexpected LAN failure occurs.
  • newegg Robust and Affordable Scalability up to 60TB When the storage capacity of the Synology DS1512+ is nearing its limits, it can easily be expanded with the Synology DX5132. The Synology DX513 securely connects to the Synology DS1512+ via an eSATA cable of specially-designed connectors on both ends to ensure maximum throughput. The Synology DX513 can directly expand the existing storage on the Synology DS1512+ to a maximum 60TB capacity.
  • newegg iSCSI and Virtualization Ready With the iSCSI support in DSM, the Synology DS1512+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. It is the ideal alternative to SAN solution for businesses. Affordable and cost-effective, iSCSI allows SMB users to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays, while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.
  • newegg Full-featured Business Applications The Synology DS1512+ runs on the renowned operation system Synology DSM, offering applications and features designed specifically for SMBs. Comprehensive network protocol support assures seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Windows ADS and LDAP integration allows the DS1512+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment, with no need to recreate user accounts. The Directory Server package can turn the DS1512+ into an LDAP-based directory server within minutes. Windows ACL support on DS1512+ provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing IT staffs to set up privileges to files and folders on the DS1512+ through their familiar Windows user interface. Internet file access is simplified with the included encrypted FTP server and the web-based file explorer, Synology File Station.
  • newegg Energy Efficient Design Synology DiskStation is designed and developed with energy efficiency in mind. Compared with the average PC counterparts, Synology DS1512+ consumes only 50.6 watts in operation. The support of wake on LAN, scheduled power on/off, and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation costs. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packaging materials. Synology acknowledges its responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat System

Pros: The system works great!

Cons: Documentation does not get updated. You have to dig for updated information.

Other Thoughts: The DX510 is listed as the expansion unit however, it is discontinued. However, if you dig around the synology site says that the DX513 is the replacement for DX510.

5 out of 5 eggsEXCELLENT SYNOLOGY PRODUCT

Pros: Quiet, fast, easy hookup, the features on this product are long, HIGHLY RECOMMEND
200 mbs read/writes

Cons: NONE!!......for my tech experience, but like some other reviewers have said the processor ...and I believe this should be upgraded to the new Intel processors...it would produce the next generation server.....like Apple products...power sells!

Other Thoughts: I finally was able to afford one of these from a once in a lifetime Newegg sale!! Thank you very much Newegg!!
Wanted a 1512+ for a couple of years, started with a 212+ then a 712+ ....I have to recommend this product or the new 1513+ to everyone, because they just work great
Very fast shipping, double boxed, can't go wrong with Newegg

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, EXCELLENT!

Pros: Running 5x 3tb WD Red drives. Using Synology Hybrid RAID which is basically RAID 5 in my setup. Have roughly 10.8 tb for storage. I'm using this primarily as a media server to stream to my xbox so my computer doesn't have 4 external hard drives and is on 24/7.

Media Server app is awesome. Simple set up and it's ready to go. Streaming perfect. Setup was a breeze. I'm still learning everything about it but it's so easy to use.

I like how it looks. Some people were saying the lights were too bright but I don't mind them. I'm used to my computer being on though and it's brighter.

Cons: Price, but it wasn't too big of a deal. Honestly, it's worth it for how simple this was to set up. Keep in mind that I have very limited networking knowledge. I know computers but networking always gets me confused unless it's simple. And it was a breeze for me.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you're ready for the investment. With the server and the drives, I was looking at $1500 ish.

Other things to consider are your home network capabilities. I need to upgrade my router and all my cabling. Currently through my router from my comp I'm only getting 11.2 mb/s write speed. But I just left it on overnight and it finished. Luckily the majority of my stuff was on external 3.0s so I just plugged those directly into the server and they transferred much quicker at around 70 mb/s.

I haven't upgraded the RAM or the fans yet. Although it seems quite quick and the stock fans are fairly quite even when I changed my settings to speed them up.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing +++

Pros: Great backup storage server. Using 3 x 3TB WD Drives as SHR (Synology version of RAID5).

Simple, easy to use WebGUI with every feature I can think of. Its got more bells and whistles than what we needed it for but that can always be a plus.

Very easy to set up, even with 3x 3TB drives it just took a few minutes to get it up and running.

It has locking drive bays!! Why some NAS do not have this I dont know but this one does!

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent NAS for the home

Pros: -Runs quietly
-Keeps HDDs cool
-Extremely fast
-Flexible OS

Cons: None to speak of.

Other Thoughts: I've had this running 24/7 since I bought it (several months now) and have had zero problems. Running 5x 4TB Seagate drives.

5 out of 5 eggsBest-of-Breed... at a Price

Pros: Insane speeds, outstanding features, incredible management UI, tons of expandability, great design, SHR as an hot-expandable alternative to RAID protection... and did I mention the performance?

Cons: Cost: At >$100/bay, this will eat a hole in your wallet even before you stock it with drives.

Other Thoughts: I have NAS devices from Seagate, Buffalo, Iomega/Lenovo, and Drobo. This Synology outperforms all of them by nearly a factor of 10 on the same network on the same files under the same traffic and environmental conditions. For years, I was tempted by Synology but resisted because of the cost... now I can truly recognize that you really do get what you pay for. Take the plunge and buy it... you won't be sorry.

If your data needs are huge, or will/might be huge, this might actually be one of the cheaper approaches. Consider that, fully maxed out, the 1512 costs around $80 per SHR-protected TB... that's not bad at all compared to the 3-4 separate NAS devices you'd have to buy on their own.

4 out of 5 eggsUsed?

Pros: This is the second one of these I've purchased. An excellent NAS device. Highly reliable with many features.

Cons: Unit had been used. It was obvious that this was a return. A few years back I purchased a Nikon D300 that had been used. This is a concern to me. If I pay for a new item, I expect a new item.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for home user

Pros: Excellent design, very high quality. Paired with 5 4TB seagate drives (yay memorial day sale!), I maxed out the gigabit connection when transferring from my core2duo server to this nas. The CPU is quite speedy & my ram has never gone above ~10%. Coming from a DS410j this thing is a beast, and what a deal!

Cons: none that I can think of

Other Thoughts: What a steal over this past memorial day sale! The 5 bays paired with 4TB drives gives monster space with room to expand with their expansion units (although I don't think the egg sells those anymore, or at least I haven't seen them in stock for a while).

4 out of 5 eggsWarning, not supported by Synology!

Pros: Great NAS, I like Synology products, though sometimes it takes a while to get speed optimized.

Cons: This model is no longer supported by Synology. DS1513+ is the new model but it is not available on Newegg yet.

This is a warning. I did a search for DS1513+ and missed the red message at the top of the Newegg page, since the results showed the DS1512+. I didn't double check the number (the look almost identical) so ordered the wrong one.

Not a big deal since they are similar. The biggest upgrade is 4 LAN ports instead of 2 so you can get 350MB/sec speeds reading.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible, get QNAP instead

Pros: None yet, can't login to the darn thing! Stuck on downloading DSM 4.2 update for over 24 hours.

Cons: First DS1512+ shipped out the us was DOA. Had a giant gap in the front panel. Looks like someone dropped it. Newegg quickly sent out replacement. Got the second unit in couple days (thanks NewEgg!). Put in 5x WD Red 3TB, installed Synology Assistant, launch the web interface. It asked to upgrade to DSM4.2 so OK I clicked. And it has been stuck on that screen for over 24 hours now. Can't login. Can't do anything with this piece of junk.

Other Thoughts: Submit support Ticket to Synology. Took them forever to reply to my email. I get a response back once every hour or so. Now it's 4PM, they're out of office. My problem is still not solved. So I guess I'm dead in the water until Monday. Synology you suck! Our Business runs 24/7 you only work 9AM-4PM M-F!!! Should have gotten a QNAP.
