The Synology DS412+ Four-Bay Diskless System is a high performance, cost-effective, network-attached storage solution specifically designed for small- and medium-sized businesses. A Dual Core processor, an abundant amount of memory, and two Gigabit LAN ports enable an ultra- smooth, lag-free response, while the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and eSATA connection allow instant, lightning-fast storage expansion. Running on the renowned operation system Synology DSM, and featuring an abundance of applications and features, this system provides an efficient way to centralize data backups, protect critical assets, and share files across different platforms. Complete with the high reliability and stability Synology is renowned for, you can rest assured that your business will be performing at top efficiency, with minimized issues and maximized up time.

  • newegg Experience High Performance Data Throughput With the Link Aggregation enabled, the Synology DS412+ delivers an average 182.66 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 205.68 MB/sec reading1. Coming with USB 3.0 support – which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, namely 10 times faster than USB 2.0 – the DS412+ takes less time for data transfer for external hard drives and consumes less power. The Synology DS412+ brings you the high performance that your data-intensive applications demand for a storage system.
  • newegg Dependable and Reliable Businesses need a strong foundation to face mission-critical tasks. The Synology DS412+ delivers high data availability to ensure access when it’s needed. The 2 LAN with failover support and hot-swappable drives will ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement or the unexpected LAN failure. The CPU is the heart of any system, and the DS412+ incorporates a passive cooling structure to avoid the dependency of a dedicated processor cooling fan, and mitigate any critical point of failure. When the system detects fan fails, the built-in redundancy mechanism will spin up the functional fan to properly ventilate the system, and support continuous operations until the replacement fan arrives. Therefore, potential system damages are minimized and system availability is maximized.
  • newegg Flexible Storage Management The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically builds an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed, eliminating the need to have hard drives of identical size, while still offering a manual setup option for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID allows you to create more than one volume on a RAID structure, providing a flexible and efficient way to manage your storage across all available hard drives. When the need arises to expand the volumes, simply allocate more storage space on the UI, and DSM does the rest for you without any service disruption.
  • newegg Rich Business Applications Synology DS412+ runs on the award-winning operating system Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which offers comprehensive applications and features designed specifically for office and business workgroups. Web Station with PHP/MySQL support allows a single Synology DS412+ to host up to 30 websites and numerous third-party web applications. The built-in mail server turns Synology DS412+ into a dedicated mail service provider. Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to manage IP cameras deployed in your office or home. Windows ADS integration allows the Synology DS412+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment, with no need to recreate users’ accounts on the Synology DS412+. Windows ACL support on the DS412+ provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing IT staffs to set up privileges to files and folders on DS412+ through their familiar Windows user interface.
  • newegg iSCSI and Virtualization Ready With the iSCSI support in DiskStation Manager (DSM), the Synology DS412+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. It is the ideal alternative to SAN solution for businesses. Affordable and cost-effective, iSCSI allows SMB users to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays, while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.
  • newegg Energy Efficient Design With 44 watts power consumption in operation, the Synology DS412+ is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provides two 92x92 mm fans and the smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, its noise-dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of Wake on LAN/WAN, multiple scheduled power on/off, and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation costs. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges its responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reliable, quiet, customizable with a user-friendly web interface. Works as advertised.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: The option to use a second unit as a backup is cool but not sure it's worth the cost of second + more drives. NAS in combination with cloud storage seems a better failsafe option in case of physical damage/theft.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of Synology's bad customer support service

Pros: When the NAS unit works it's fantastic. That is unless you unplug it or it crashes on you forcing you to unplug or power cycle it. I'm really disappointed in Synology's support and the fact that I was sent a replacement that was bad after 3 weeks and now I"ll have to wait even longer.

Cons: Now I've had my DS412+ for little over a year and it's been great. That is until the unit experienced an issue 3 weeks ago that forced me to endure the entire weekend as Synology doesn't work on the weekend and then 3 more days of back and forth with them. They finally had me send the unit in for replacement even after I gave them provide of the issues via a video and my invoice (from Newegg), of course I had to pay. I finally got the new unit 2 days ago, so my entire environment was down until then... and guess what? The new unit doesn't freaking work! As soon as I installed the DSMupdate I've experiences issues with NFS disconnects, constant "configuration lost" issues and blinking blue lights that last for 10-20 stretches. Of course Synology hasn't gotten back to me yet and I don't expect them to either until at least Monday if I'm lucky.

And as I write this I was installing the DSM again and now it can't find the unit after a reboot. What the hell Synology!

Other Thoughts: I used to sing Synology praises but now I know better. As soon as they replace this unit, if they replace the unit, I am done with this company.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS!!!

Pros: Extremly reliable and easy to set up. Have owned and used it for 11 months now without any problems or issues. We also use the Surveillance Station which is a GREAT application, and very easy to set up as well. Currently we are using 2 - 4TB Seagate drives. Will expand with 2 more drives as needed. Synology also keeps up with their OS and Surveillance App with updates as needed which are as easy as pressing a button.

Cons: None so far...

5 out of 5 eggsWhere to begin? I love this thing!

Pros: Bought this for a combined web/mail/media/whatever server. Hardware and software-wise, it is one of the best, all-encompassing, easiest to use, most customizable products I've used.

I've rarely seen processor usage go above 30%-- and remember that I'm running various servers on this thing. It's usually at 0% and will jump up to maybe 10% with heavy internet traffic or while transferring data to clients. RAM seems to sit between 25%-30%, though if I start running other packages on it, I've hit 40% (I did upgrade the 1GB module to 2GB, though, which is also relatively easy and is very stable).

The speed of this thing astounds me. With an SSD for my web services and package installation drive and three 1 TB WD Red NAS drives in a RAID 0 array for my media and backup drive, I've been able to pump data out of its ethernet ports (both of them set up into a 2Gbps dual-link) at 209 megabytes per second. I never pump that much data at once under normal circumstances, but that was pushing it to its limit. You'll have to have an enterprise-grade switch to set up dual-link aggregation, of course, but even before I set that up, I got full gigabit speeds out of this thing. It's a beast, and you won't be sorry using it as your media server-- I don't store any of my movies or music on any local machines anymore. It's all on the NAS.

The array of available packages is amazing. There are plenty of Synology-developed packages that run great. Then there are dozens and dozens of community-developed packages to give you even more options.

I easily set up a free SSL certificate (NOT self-generated) for my website from StartSSL).

The Linux-based software is quite malleable. I've set up quite a few customizations of my own that help run things the way I need for my applications.

These are not power hungry! I think mine runs at 40 watts max. That's less electricity than my gigabit switch. Heck, that's less electricity than most of the light bulbs in my house.

I use a second one of these at work as a security camera server and an intranet site server.

Cons: Mail server package is a little convoluted still. It works, but it could be better.

You'll have to be fairly tech-savvy to set up a website and be able to have it accessible from the outside world (meaning not just on your local network). That's just the nature of it all, though.

Wish it had more USB ports. I knew what I was getting into, of course, but it'd be nice.

While the Linux-based OS is definitely able to be molded to your needs, it's been customized internally so that it's different than all other distributions, which makes researching how to do a certain task or doing a certain task that works on 90% of other Linux distros a little more difficult.

Other Thoughts: Just get one. It's completely worth it. I really want one of their 12-bay ones. Just to have it. Ahh.

5 out of 5 eggsTank

Pros: This thing runs and runs. I have had 0 issues with it since install on site. The OS has a ton of features.

Cons: Stupid power cord and interface. They use what appears to be some weird s-video type cable for power. There is no way to secure it into the unit, and it only has about 5mm of contact into the back of the machine. This means if you move the unit, you better secure that cable or it will wriggle out.

Other Thoughts: I have had this installed on a customers site for more than a year and have had 0 issues with it. It hosts a rather large peachtree file, quicken file, and huge quantities of workers data. The updates are seamless and painless, I cant say enough good things about this device.

5 out of 5 eggsGood NAS

Pros: The application interface is great.
quite an amazing amount of options/applications, i'm very happy with my purchase.
Has help / tutorials / forums to guide you through things you aren't super familiar with.
i've had no issues otherwise - it just runs.

Cons: if this is even a con - I haven't had the best success with just any wi-fi dongle i have laying around the house. you may want to consult their compatibility list (i know right) prior to a purchase of one.
http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/compatibility

Other Thoughts: have it paired with an APC RS 700G UPS which it recognizes and gives it ~1hr of runtime if I want it to shut down when the ups hits low battery - sweet.

in coolmode fan operation Disk 1 @ 27C/81F, Disk2-4 @ 29C/84F. I have it sitting in the corner of the room and in its "noisiest" mode i don't hear it.

Upgraded the memory to 2gigs, more than i need currently. consult youtube for an install guide if necessary.

5 out of 5 eggssuperb product

Pros: intuitive, easy to use web admin interface. hardware is easy to setup. feature rich and excellent performance. Can easily do wire-speed saturated transfers to this device if you wish:need.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Synology NAS gear is suitable for use in business environments, and has a price point that is far better value than many 'enterprise' products.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Operating continuously without issue since 11/2012

Cons: None that I can think of

Other Thoughts: I only realized how long this NAS had been running without a hiccup when it alerted me that a drive needed to be replaced (hot swappable).

I wish I had the room for the 8 bay version.

1 out of 5 eggsPower Brick DOA

Pros: Can't tell, it doesn't work

Cons: Item arrived and the power brick was DOA.

Other Thoughts: This would probably be a great device if I had gotten one with a functioning power brick. I had to wait a few days to set it up and when I plugged it in, nothing. very disappointed in the quality of the power brick.
