4 out of 5 eggsI LOVE Synology Products

Pros: This was a very tough decision for me to NOT give a 5/5 Egg Rating. But if by giving it a 4/5 Egg Rating makes someone look at why instead of glancing past a 5/5.

This version does not come with its own HDD but that's what you would want anyway regardless which system you purchase because you would want to use/purchase a NAS-HDD which are designed specifically for NAS. I purchased a WD 2TB and I've only filled about 1/4th of it. Consisting of TV Episodes, a dozen or so movies of whatever's current, all of my music flies and whatever misclealiouns files I have. So the average to above average file saver will be more than sufficent with a 1-Bay Synology device.

With that being said I've owned my Synology Diskstation DS112j for a year now and seriously I couldn't be more impressed with (#1 reason ) it's ease of use, plug and play ability, functionality, design and how it's never let me down. I can stream every video file I have within my HomeStation server into every output device I have that plays video and it's worked flawlessly since day 1. Just do yourself a favor and purchase a unit with some more power because even if you're an average user eventually, you're going to become much better at using it and using all of the abilities it offers as well as the limitless potental for the future.

Take a look at

Cons: Now, the reason I gave a 4 is because if you're going to use these units as I do and I think the new "goldrush" form of media storage is this. This unit has worked better than I expected nor imagined being affordable technologically available to the masses.

So if you're going to use your "HomeStation" (Trademarking that puppy!) as I do then you're going to want to invest with a Synology NAS with a little more "umph." The 128MB of RAM on board does affect performance and ability to multitask within the Synology web GUI and the packets ran through it. The 1.GHz processor as well leaves you wanting a little more power to have at your disposal.

Other Thoughts: Again, I love my 112j and it does everything I want it to. I just wish I knew what I've learned over the year of the abilities of these NAS devices and purchased a unit with a lot more RAM and a stronger CPU. I'll probably never upgrade my NAS because I love it and I'm content with HOW I obtain my personal files but if I had a more powerful NAS I think I would use what's available today instead.

2 out of 5 eggsterrible support and empty promises

Pros: cool, quiet, low-priced, surprising transfer speeds on local connections

Cons: terrible customer support, poor build quality, openVPN performance is abysmal, torrents are slow, ridiculously slow boot up times, AppleTV support added in DSM 4.3 rarely works

Other Thoughts: AppleTV support feeds content directly from the NAS to an AppleTV. It great when it works, but has proven unreliable. You can still airplay it from an iPhone or iPad, but this method kills off dolby digital and really taxes your network. Getting support from Synology requires calling up extremely grumpy staff who are NOT TRAINED on the current DSM release, submitting a support ticket and opening access to the device, and reading "I don't know what you are talking about" over the following weeks via email.

The processor is underpowered for VPN and surveillance station tasks. The Bittorrent client lacks a blacklist feature and is slow as balls anyway.

AFP support for time machine is actually quite good. Strangely, it seems more reliable on OSX than connecting via windows 7.

The low power requirement was a nice bonus, and the cooling is fantastic. I have a hitachi drive that I reused in this, and boy did it run hot. It's fine now.

Build quality is a joke. One of the screws that held it closed did not have anything to grab inside, so I had to use an oversized on to dig into the plastic. It worked fine, but I shouldn't have to do that.

I specifically bought this for the tech support and low-power consumption. I should have just built my own freeNAS box instead. I loathe this thing. If the support was worthwhile, I would forgive everything else, but they are abysmal. Poorly-trained, rude, and dismissive.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS112J- Economy NAS for the home user

Pros: Price is excellent for what you receive. Works well with the newer Seagate 4 TB NAS drives. Synology Disk Manager software is the best NAS software I have used. Pretty much idiot proof. Nice sturdy housing with adequate ventilation to keep the enclosed drive cool. Very good warranty from Synology

Cons: None that I have found so far. Have been using it for well over a month with no issues. Tech help from Synology is first rate.

Other Thoughts: I had a new Seagate NAS 4 TB hard drive to review, and wanted a new NAS housing to set it up in. I chose the Synology for the way it was built, it's low price, and the Disk Manager software. This is one very nice housing, with just enough memory and enough processor to get the job done. I run a cloud server, a media server, ftp, and full file server. The Disk Manager software installs easily and all the separate packets integrate nicely. I can schedule on and off times for the server, and the indexing of the media files I put on it (.mp4), and the iphone and android apps, make it easy to stream movies and music in the home. This is one purchase I am glad to have made and I made the right choice in Synology.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value and Great Operation - a few caveats

Pros: Tons of functionality for the price, very power efficient, reliable and predictable software and hardware operation. Very slick and easy to use GUI available from any machine using the internet. Can access the actual OS using terminal connectivity (looks like LINUX). Great User Account controls. Great add on functionality which is all free through Synology. Cloud is easy to setup and keeps multiple machines in synch effortlessly. Android and Apple apps - wrok great and free.

Cons: Documentation is a bit useless - it sort of tells you everything you can get from the interface and the messages issued by the GUI but often does not go into details about what happens when certain selections are made.

Other Thoughts: The system is great and I am happy I purchased it. Some caveats though could help new buyers. As soon as you have it up and running go to the control panel and check for a DSM (system) update (nowhere is this suggested). If you plan on uploading photos, do so using the Synology photo up-loader (this is avail on the Synology site and uses the client CPU HP to generate thumbnails – saves tons of time). AudioStation is great (a bit limited in functionality but all the necessities are there). Register for the User community blog on the Synology site - big help. The PhotoStation software allows you to control which folders (which are essentially albums) your various users can access. This ability goes down 2 folders of granularity – it would be great if it went further perhaps a minimum of 5 levels. Would be nice if the AudioStation could use Cloud music files instead of a shared folder (minor issue for me).

3 out of 5 eggsentry-level NAS

Pros: Good software
Easy to use
Easy to understand

Cons: Enclosure is very large and very empty
Processor is slow
Only 128MB RAM
Setup diagnostics mislead me into thinking I had a problem with my network switch (the HDD was bad)

Other Thoughts: I installed this device in a Structured Media Enclosure in the back of a closet and used this to serve the three computers in my house. I have one folder for media (pictures, movies, music) and one encrypted folder (personal information). Because I put this in a narrow space, I definitely noticed how large this device was relative to the size of the HDD; there's a lot of empty space--this is probably not a big deal to most users though.

The specs on this thing allow only light duty, at best. I attempted to install Java and Crashplan, and they alone maxed out the RAM. Encryption is exceedingly slow on this thing; I've used encryption on HDDs on my desktop and never had a significant performance hit. This is another story. Reads and writes are 10% of what they are with unencrypted data. Doing a large file copy and logging in as an administrator sometimes crashed the device.

I can't recommend this one, but I've since upgraded to the more robust version of their 1-bay NAS, and it's a world of difference. I've given up on the Crashplan, but the device is just so much more tolerant of heavy usage. The software to manage the device is just so much snappier and more responsive. The encrypted folder mounts considerably faster. File transfers are faster (still slower than what Synology advertises on its website, but definitely quick enough for me). This device could work for very light duty, but I have to recommend going with then next higher version for room to grow.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic!

Pros: 1.Easy Physical setup-Snap in HD and ready to go.
2.Build Quality-Very Good
3.GUI is the best I've ever seen-wow! So many things you can do with this unit.
4.Backs up my systems (work/home)-secure remote web services with nice GUI-Plays movies flawlessly to DNLA TV Setup/Streams music great. Iphones/Ipad/Computers all connect to this wonderfully.
5.Too many things to list.

Cons: 1.Better consolidation of settings and applications would be nice. example: the the privilege settings can get confusing as far as setting up, they are kind of all over the place. But by playing around with it-you get it down.

Other Thoughts: I was a Buffalo NAS user for some time-I am so glad I ventured off and found Synology, hands down the best I've seen!
