The Synology DS413 Four-Bay Diskless System is a high performance, eco-friendly network attached storage solution specifically designed for workgroups and offices. Its Dual Core processor, abundant amount of memory, and Gigabit LAN enable an ultra-smooth, lag-free response, while the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and eSATA connection allow instant, lightning-fast storage expansion. Running on the renowned Synology DSM operating system, and featuring an abundance of applications and features, this system provides an cost-effective way to centralize data backups, protect critical assets, and share files. Complete with the high reliability and stability Synology is renowned for, you can rest assured that your business will be performing at top efficiency with minimized issues and maximized up time.

  • newegg Dual Core Performance with Smart Energy Management With Dual Core processing power, the Synology DS413 delivers an average 80.86 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 111.12 MB/sec reading1. The built-in Floating-Point Unit makes for faster thumbnail processing to enhance photo viewing at different resolutions. With its USB 3.0 support – which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, namely 10 times faster than USB 2.0 – the DS413 takes less time for data transfer of external hard drives and consumes less power. It delivers high performance when needed, but during low activity levels it uses only a very small amount of power. During System Hibernation mode, it consumes only 3.3 watts of power to listen for network activities, and when needed, resumes back to operation in a very short amount of time. Compared to shutting off the whole system, System Hibernation brings a closer balance between smart energy management and system responsiveness.
  • newegg Flexible Storage Management The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically builds an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed, eliminating the need to have hard drives of identical size, while still offering a manual setup option for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID allows you to create more than one volume on a RAID structure, providing a flexible and efficient way to manage your storage across all available hard drives. When the need arises to expand the volumes, simply allocate more storage space on the UI, and the DSM does the rest for you without any service disruption.
  • newegg Complete Backup Solutions The Synology DS413 offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. PC users can back up their data to the Synology DS413 using Synology Data Replicator software, and Mac OS X users enjoy native Apple Time Machine integration. A web-based backup wizard is provided for backing up data in the Synology DS413 to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted protocol, or to an external hard drive via USB and eSATA connections. In addition, backing up to the cloud using Amazon S3 service is supported. The add-on package, Time Backup, keeps DiskStation data in multiple versions, so IT administrators can easily keep track of them and restore to previous versions when needed.
  • newegg Rich Office Applications The Synology DiskStation DS413 runs on the renowned Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) multitasking operating system. Offering a comprehensive list of business applications, the DS413 can be customized to run multiple applications of your choice to fulfill the requirements of your business environment. The DS413 replaces several pieces of traditional network hardware with rich features designed specifically for workgroups and offices, such as antivirus, video surveillance, webmail, VPN, and LDAP directory services. Applications are managed in the Package Center – an application portal that hosts applications as ready-to-use packages – to ensure high software integration as well as one-click-installation to eliminate guess work during installation. Additional approved third-party PHP web applications, such as content management, customer relationship management, and e-commerce systems, can be hosted on the DS413 by using Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL web content.
  • newegg Hassle-free System Installation and High Security Data Encryption Web Assistant is a web-based utility to make every DiskStation as easy to install as possible. Installation is done inside your existing web browser by setting up all vital system components in few simple steps. Combined with a quick-start widget, users can simultaneously tour the DSM operating system and set it up to use right away. The Synology DS413 is equipped with an encryption engine which offloads the encryption calculation task away from the main CPU, helping to improve file transfer speeds of the DiskStation. Data protection is an important matter for businesses of all sizes. High-end features previously available only on enterprise level hardware are now accessible via Synology DS413 to small- and medium-sized businesses. The DS413 provides share-level AES 256-bit encryption to aid in the prevention of unauthorized access attempts to the hard drives.
  • newegg Energy Efficient with Cool and Quiet Design With 35.62 watts power consumption during operation, the Synology DS413 is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provides two 92x92 mm fans and the smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, but also its noise-dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of multiple scheduled power on/off and System Hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation costs. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts, and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges its responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and reliable

Pros: Simple and flexible configuration. Although you can directly control LVM and RAID, the "Synology Hybrid Raid" gives all of the advantages without any of the complexity. You can add drives to expand the storage array (instead of having to make new volumes from additional drives). You can also increase the storage array size by incremental replacement with larger hard drives. For example, if originally populated with 4x2TB drives using one-drive redundancy would give 6TB of storage. Replacing those drives one at a time with 4x4TB would give 12TB of storage without having to back up and restore your data.

DSM is frequently updated and has powerful capabilities, and free mobile applications are provided to complement them. Status monitoring warns you of failing drives so you can order replacements before they crash. Integration with UPS allows having the unit automatically shutdown before the UPS runs out of juice.

Drives are loaded onto caddies that lock securely into place, but are readily removed and inserted.

Cons: expensive and doesn't do hot swap (of course, what does). First unit was defective (though replaced by NewEgg/Synology without hassle -- I don't remember the details, it was three years ago).

Other Thoughts: I used to build my own storage systems, but after dealing with ongoing support issues (e.g., notification of drive failure) I decided it would be better, even if not cheaper, to use specialty hardware and software. I selected Synology for this and time has proven it a good decision and I have two units currently in operation.

Three years after setting up this unit the original drives started dying. Replaced drive three on a Friday, then drive one died the following Monday. Fortunately I had a drive on hand for the first failure and the RAID rebuilt without issue. But when drive one failed it took out the entire volume. Then drive four started having bad sectors. Synology support worked with me to recover the data, one of their technicians putting in time remotely to directly effect the repair. It took to Friday evening, a full week from when the first failing drive was replaced, but now it has three of the four drives replaced and the data has been recovered. The only reason I still have the data after three drives failed within a week's span is the notification and reporting provided by DSM.

With that much data it is hard to tell what corruption may have occurred (there were over a hundred thousand file system errors), but being a cautious sort I use PAR2 on static data files (like ripped TV shows and movies, a major use to avoid the necessity of disk handling) and so far everything has verified.

My main point with the story is that three years after purchase Synology had a technician spend time on their dime assisting with resolving the failed drives -- something they do not even sell. IMO the premium charge for these units is worth it for the build quality, product warranty, DSM, and the support.

1 out of 5 eggsLasted 2 years and then raid controlled crashed

Pros: Easy to use.
Works well when it's working.

Cons: Short life span, seems to be unreliable. You must have a backup device to back up your backup device as it's non-standard RAID setup failed after 2 years.

Other Thoughts: I wish I knew I had to have redundancy for my redundancy.

2 out of 5 eggsNice while it lasts

Pros: Fast, highly capable NAS appliance, easy to set up and manage, quiet, compact, attractive design, nice user interface.

Cons: Doesn't seem to last. The original unit started to spontaneously shut down at random times after 13 months. The USB ports on the reconditioned replacement unit (under warranty) from Synology never did work right and within six weeks it was doing the same spontaneous shut down thing the first one did. Starting to think they all may do this - starting to seem like a design flaw. Disappointing.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The firmware is feature rich and the unit is very reliable. Some of the features are better then some small office windows servers. I got this unit for the media features. I am able to stream my videos from the unit to xbox 360, XBMC, Windows Media Player, Apple TV, and my iOS devices with no issues.

Cons: I couldn't this the DSM console to access my router to auto configure my port forwarding rules, not a big deal. This unit is running a PowerPC CPU so Plex can't be installed on it until Plex releases a version for this type of CPU. Not a big loss as the Synology has a video that ships that just as good.

Other Thoughts: I love this unit I use it everyday as a secure file server and media server. My work blocks Netflix but they don't block my nas so I just use the web interface to work Movies and TV shows.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product!

Pros: Everything works! Takes some reading to figure out which features you want/need, but that's to be expected unless you're already a SAN expert.

Cons: Interesting behavior when copying extremely large folders from Win7, can cache writes for about 7gb then speeds drop down. Perhaps this would be a bit higher in units with more RAM and/or spindles.

Other Thoughts: Love it, discovered a whole new world when I discovered my smart tv can read the Video folder without any user intervention.
Now I'm ripping all my DVD's with MakeMKV and running out of disk!
Going to have to buy bigger disks, or more likely, bigger disks AND a bigger NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to Use and Get Working

Pros: I bought this primarily to use as a high capacity network drive with redundant memory, and it has worked flawlessly since day one.

I quickly found myself exploring the server functions and successfully set it up as a VPN server to allow remote access to its files via the internet. I added 4 x 3TB hard drives configured using the Synology hybrid raid so that one disk can fail and be hot swapped for a new one without memory loss. This gives me 9TB of storage, and I can upgrade one disk at a time to 4TB drives, if needed, without issue using the hybrid raid. Synology even provides a DDNS server to facilitate remote access.

It works plug and play with a UPS so in the case of a power failure it will automatically shut down properly when battery power runs low to protect the unit.

I'll keep exploring this server's functions and find more ways to use it.

Cons: I will eventually use the security camera function, but it comes with only one license, so adding multiple cameras will get expensive.
