The DiskStation 713+ is a robust, scalable NAS server for business environments. It is equipped with a dual-core Atom CPU, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and a 1 GB DDR3 RAM. It also runs Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, which can be customized to include applications of your choice to fulfill your requirements. Conveniently compact, the Synology DS713+ has two bays, but it can easily be upgraded with the Synology DX513 expansion unit by connecting to the DS713+ via the eSATA interface for seven bays and up to 28 TB in total.

  • newegg High Performance Dual Core CPU With a dual core CPU and Link Aggregation, the DS713+ keeps up with the speed of your business, with 202.3 MB/sec reading and 135.84 MB/sec writing speed under RAID1 configuration in a Windows environment.* For backup onto external hard drives, Super-Speed USB 3.0 ports provide ten times the transfer speed of their predecessor. Dual-LAN failover support and hot-swappable drives ensure continual service uptime during drive replacement or unexpected LAN failure. (*With Link Aggregation enabled. The performance figures may vary in different environments.)
  • newegg Straightforward RAID Management Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically optimizes RAID capacity and protection based on the hard drives installed, eliminating the need for identical sizes while retaining custom setup options for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID allows for more than one volume to be created on a single RAID structure, giving you flexibility across all available drives. Volumes can be expanded as necessary by allocation on the easy-to-use UI, and Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) does the rest without any service interruption.
  • newegg Flexible Scalability up to 28 TB When the storage capacity of the DS713+ nears its limit, upgrading is easy with the Synology DX513 expansion unit.* Connected via eSATA with specially designed locking devices, the DX513 expands storage capacity up to a maximum of 28 TB, with a minimal amount of time spent in setup and configuration. (*DS713+ supports up to one Synology DX513/DX213, purchased separately.)
  • newegg Virtualization Ready Fully compliant with VMware, Citrix, and Hyper-V, with iSCSI and VAAI support, the DS713+ is the most affordable virtualization storage solution of its kind. It allows SMB users to consolidate data storage, while giving the illusion of locally attached disks.
  • newegg Cross-Platform Interoperability DS713+ runs Synology’s award-winning DiskStation Manager (DSM) – an easy-to-operate OS which can be customized to include applications of your choice to fulfill your requirements. Within your business environment, extensive network protocol support provides seamless cross-platform file sharing between Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Windows AD and LDAP integration allows DS713+ to fit into existing business network infrastructure without having to recreate user accounts, while Windows ACL allows IT personnel to set up privileges to files and folders through familiar Windows UI, delivering peace of mind with simplicity.
  • newegg Easy Backup Solutions To protect your critical business data, the DS713+ can become a centralized backup target for consolidating fragmented and unstructured information across your network through a range of options. PC users can backup to the DS713+ with Synology’s Data Replicator, while the DS713+ also fully supports Mac OS X’s native Apple Time Machine. Synology’s own backup wizard can back up information to another Synology NAS or any rsync server, with the option of using an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA. The wizard can also back up your information to the cloud, including Amazon S3 and STRATO HiDrive.

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless Service - Very Fast

Pros: Very Fast - died unexpectedly. Used in RAID 1 w/ WDD Black Caviar drives - Customer Services was Great!!! New unit arrived with credit card for guarantee. Swapping the drives was absolutely painless! I was sweating that part. No last data on drives. Returned bad unit and received notice of CC info release.
All is Good and would highly recommend. Repeat of Lesson for everyone - Glad I had backup, just in case, but did not need.

Cons: None - Things break - It is what happens when they do that matters.

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Reliable, affordable, easy to set up, runs applications

Cons: Would like to see more applications written for this device.

Other Thoughts: I purchased a DS214 and a DS713+ for two of my clients to replace servers. The DS214 has been running for 2+ years without a problem and the DS713+ has been running for 8 months without issue. I really like the fact that the device goes into standby mode when not being used. I believe this increases the longevity of the device.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this NAS

Pros: This NAS is small but very powerful. It has lots of great applications and does a great job organizing photos and streaming movies. It has an easy to use interface and account management is a breeze. You also get a free Synology web address that forwards to your device. So if you are someone like me who can't get a static IP address, you basically get a free one from Synology and every time your device boots up it will report back to Synology your current IP address allowing the URL to find you. I have owned it for over a year and it has never let me down and has met all my expectations.

Cons: While I love new features and appreciate Synology quickly addressing issues, it seems like once a week there is some kind of patch or upgrade. It is a little over kill. I also wish there was more 3rd party apps available for this device. It has a lot of capability but very few 3rd party apps.

Other Thoughts: A couple years back my main system crashed. I played around with the hard drive and was able to get about an hours worth of life back out of it to try and salvage everything I deemed important. I decided I would never face this again but I did not was to put private information out on someone cloud service regardless how much I was assured my information would be safe and private. I also did not want to spend the money on a service which is basically giving someone else money to buy the equipment and I have nothing to show for it. This NAS is an excellent choice. It just sits in the corner and does it's thing. I can load all my movies, photos and files and anyone I want to access them can get to them from any internet connection. I have several friends that want one for themselves and a few small businesses that have even asked me about it because they want something similar. If you have the money you won't regret buying it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks flawlessly for me

Pros: As some others have stated this thing just works. I can reliably assume that the NAS will be running for me to access when I am away from home, however, this does also mean you will need a reliable internet connection too. The number of features available with this NAS are many. So far I've setup: Video Station, Photo Station, Audio Station, Surveillance Station, WebDAV. All have worked great.

Synology has also been giving a steady stream of updates that made the system increasingly better

Cons: Some less savvy users may have trouble getting the NAS accessible through the internet and getting certain features working.

Other Thoughts: I bought WD Cavier Black drives for the NAS initially and they ran very loud and hot all the time. It is best to use lower power drives or Raid recommended drives for the NAS

5 out of 5 eggsSolid NAS

Pros: This is a great, expandable NAS. Well built with ability to run many packages in addition to the NAS duties.

Cons: Expensive - comes with no drives.

4 out of 5 eggsWorth it for me.

Pros: I'm using this for a UPnP server and it does this function better than my DIY solution. Have streamed media on several different players, I now use it as the standard to beat when benchmarking other media servers.

Cons: Expensive, but then again I've spent days trying to get a cheap CentOS box to do the same thing and this took only an hour.

Other Thoughts: The web interface operates more like an OS compared to the simple webforms you'd see on the cheaper NAS boxes. It also seems a lot more open (you can SSH as root and get the BusyBox prompt v1.16.1)

1 out of 5 eggsDrops off the network randomly

Pros: Fast, nice interface, responsive support

Cons: Will not stay on the windows network. Can connect to the web interface, but can't browse the folders sometimes. Have been working with tech support for 5 months and they finally gave me a firmware patch for my issue. It still didn't work. For $600 it should work flawlessly. I have a cheap LG that I have never had a problem with. Wish I would have bought one of those.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: The product is great.

Cons: Unfortunately, customer service is severely lacking. If your problem requires more that restarting the DiskStation, you are out of luck. Their idea of customer service means response by email only. For whatever reason, my DS713+ and Cloud Station has a problem syncing Quickbooks files

Other Thoughts: SATA III would be nice. I would also like to see a three bay NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Stable, reliable, dependable
Very well designed
Relatively easy setup
LOADED with features
Don't panic, it's not windows!
Expandable and quick

Cons: A tad pricey
Some of the features could use a bit of documentation, this is definitely NOT for the average clueless computer user
Requires a fair amount of basic computer and networking knowledge to use it effectively
Doesn't make my coffee for me ;)

Other Thoughts: No regrets!! This is my second Synology NAS product and I simply can not recommend Synology products highly enough! This little box just sits in the corner and WORKS! Flawlessly! For months at a time, without issues. Well worth taking the time to research and learn about, spend a few days reading their forums and ask questions, you won't be disappointed once you learn what this thing can do for you.
