Superior Performance

The Synology DS1513+ is built for speed. With dual core CPU and expandable RAM capacity, the DS1513+ is ideal for the mission critical tasks of SMBs as well as the most intensive applications from data-encryption to video-transcoding. With link aggregation, Synology DS1513+ can deliver up to an average 350.94MBps reading and 202.34MBps writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows® environment. 1

Resilient and Reliable

In addition to superior performance, the DS1513+ is built for reliability. Four LAN ports provide redundancy in the event of unexpected hardware failure while hot swappable drives also help to minimize system downtime during drive replacement. Furthermore, passive cooling technology eliminates the dependency upon a dedicated processor cooling fan. Should a fan fail, built-in redundancy mechanisms will spin up functional fan(s) to improve ventilation.

Uninterrupted availability is a critical goal for all businesses; however, many businesses worldwide still remain unprepared for disaster. Synology High Availability (SHA) can ensure seamless transition between clustered servers in the event of server failure with minimal impact to applications to decrease the risk of unexpected interruptions and costly downtime.

Unparalleled Flexibility

As your data storage needs grow, Synology's DS1513+ can grow with you. The DS1513+ can be connected to dedicated expansion units for additional storage on the fly, growing capacity with minimal effort. When paired with two DX513 expansion units 1 through specially designed eSATA connectors, raw capacity can be as high as 75TB.

Feature-Rich Business Applications

Put your data to work with Synology's DS1513+. With Windows ACL and LDAP support DS1513+ fits easily into any existing workgroup environment, providing detailed access control and efficient privilege settings. A wealth of SMB applications including printer sharing, VPN server, ERP software, mail server, web server, anti-virus, and network video surveillance, allows a single Synology DS1513+ to replace several pieces of traditional hardware and helps to maximize your productivity while keeping cost and effort to a minimum.

Easy Backup Solutions

To protect your critical business data, DS1513+ can become a centralized backup target for consolidating fragmented and unstructured information across your network through a range of options. PC users can backup to DS1513+ with Synology's Data Replicator, while DS1513+ also fully supports Mac OS X®'s native Apple® Time Machine®. Synology's own backup wizard can back up information to another Synology NAS or any rsync server, with the option of using an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA. The wizard can also back up your information to the cloud, including Amazon® S3, Glacier, and STRATO HiDrive.

iSCSI and Virtualization Ready

With the iSCSI support in DSM, the Synology DS1513+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. It is the ideal alternative to SAN solution for businesses. Affordable and costeffective,iSCSI allows SMB users to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.

Energy Efficient Design

Synology DiskStation are designed and developed with energy efficiency in mind. Compared with the average PC counterparts, Synology DS1513+ consumes only 51 watts in operation. Wake on LAN/WAN and scheduled power on/off features can further reduce power consumption and operation costs. HDD hibernation can be configured to take effect automatically when the system has been inactive for a specified period of time to save energy and extend hard disk life. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges the responsibility of a global citizen and works continually to reduce the environmental impact of every product.

1. Performance figures could vary on different environments.
2. DS1513+ supports up to two Synology DX513/DX213, sold separately.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: Very easy to set up. The software is 1st CLASS,
Setting up security is a snap,
Price is good for what you get.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I used 5 Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB drives. It does take a while for the verification. This NAS is very fast. Makes my old CIsco NAS look like a piece of junk.

1 out of 5 eggsShipping with no protection??

Pros: Advanced NAS. Looking forward to using it.

Cons: I was floored to see that newegg delivered this expensive nas in the Synology box with no outer box. Usually everything I receive from newegg is well packed but not this time. The NAS was delivered in the Synology box. The box was not sealed. Simply slapped the shipping label on the outside and sent it. POOR shipping for such an expensive NAS. Very disappointed in your shipping Newegg. Especially since I spent the extra money to expedite my shipping in 2 days.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this NAS!

Pros: This thing is FAST! It can saturate a GigE link w/o even blinking. Also, the expansion capability is is pretty hard to argue with. The software is intuitive and my experience with Synology support has been nothing short of great.

Cons: It's a bit of a pricey drive cage.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to upgrade from a DS409slim I've had for the last 5 years and I've got to say this is a substantial upgrade. The CPU is barely doing anything currently, and I'm looking forward to leveraging the drive space to collapse my 409 as well the few external drives I've had to expand things onto.

Once my move is complete, I am looking forward to connecting this to my network with multiple bonded links.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect NAS

Pros: Faster than my Windows server. This is the second one of these I've setup. We're using them primarily as file servers. They run quiet and cool. Setup time only took about 30 minutes but it took all night to format the 5 - 2TB drives I put in. For a small business needing to share files and have central storage this thing is a no-brainer. It's small, clean, and simple.

Cons: None I can think of so far.

Other Thoughts: In this box I used 5 - Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM. They seem to be running consistently at 91 degrees which is cooler than my Windows server. The hybrid RAID feature is awesome. I can have 2 disks fail at the same time and my data is still safe. Built in remote administration is nice. Remote file access with WEBDav isn't too hard to setup either as long as you can get your router to forward the ports.

5 out of 5 eggsThe DS1513+ is a SNAP

Pros: I have only very good things to say about this unit. The packing was good, installing the 5 drives was very simple. Even getting the unit up and working was actually easier than I expected base on what others have said. This box does way more than I'm using it for. There are plenty of apps available beyond what I using.

Cons: Could be less expensive is the only negative thing I can say

Other Thoughts: I now have room for backups for my PCs & Servers.
I also have over 1K movies, many thousands of songs, plus files that would be grief to lose and it's saved with fault tolerance. YES. Currently I'm using 3 WD 3TB RED drives and 2 WD 4TB drives. I've only used about 23% of capacity. I guess the 3TB drives could be swapped with 4TB drives at some point but no need for a long while.

This box comes with a great OS for managing the NAS and some cool apps. Give it your email and it will send notifications in case something happens, I tested it and it works. If you're on the fence and it's in your budget, do it.

5 out of 5 eggsWow

Pros: Amazing lil box. This thing is WAY more than a place to put your stuff.
I purchased with 2 WD 3TG reds to start, and in less than 20 min had a volume created and a share to move files to.
IT gets better!
This thing has 4 Nics, so i put 2 of em in LACP and teamed the intel pro nics on my desktop. (you need to use a managed switch for this)
The other 2 nics I placed on separate vlans and used them for ISCSI. I had 3 1TB drives left over from my desktop, so i placed them in the DS for just for kicks. Created a 2 TB disk group and carved out a LUN and boom my desktop has a "local" iscsi drive with MPIO just like the data-center at work.
All that advanced config stuff aside, the features that sold me is it ability to do server tasks so i can retire the giant desktop thats been running for 5 years straight in the spare bedroom.
Its running a PLEX server, an Ip cam DVR, and a headless crashplan backup. This thing is a lil workhorse. and so far I'm thrilled with it.

Cons: pricey, a little bit loud at times

3 out of 5 eggsDSM Software need work

Pros: decent h/w. good performance. but have several drawback.

Cons: DSM software looks nice but very buggy. I urge you to review their User Forum to see a list strange issue reported all the users. Their appears to be some major security issue as well. Not recommend if security is an issue.

4 out of 5 eggsUpgrade???

Pros: Compact design, upgrade-able RAM, multiple LAN ports, USB 3.0 & eSATA ports. Easy to use interface.

Cons: No included manual or software.

Other Thoughts: After struggling with a Seagate Black Armor NAS for over 4 years, and dealing with multiple failed drives and slow slow SLOW transfers and recovery times, I finally got fed up after having drive after drive either disappear or fail. I researched this Synology DS1513+ and decided it would best fit my needs. And I was not disappointed, initialized three new 3TB WD NAS RED drives in less than 15 minutes, Let me set up users, rules, volumes, and map the drives to my computers all in less then 1 hour.
Started copying backed up data back onto the array via the USB 3.0 port on the NAS at very respectable speeds. However transferring files over my network totally blew me away, it was phenomenal. a 1TB video file took less than 30 seconds on the Synology over my 1GB network when it took 3-4 minutes on the old Seagate!! So far I'm very happy with it, and fully expect to add the expansion units as I need to increase my storage capacity!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: I've been running a DS1511 unit for 4-ish years now. Mostly the same model since I've upgraded the firmware to latest. Has more features than I could possibly use and they all work flawlessly. Automatic backup, streaming log files from routers, remote access to services, DDNS at times, e-mail notifications, streaming security camera feeds, etc etc. Very quiet and very stable. Highly recommended.

Cons: More of a caution for older DS units: At one point I purchased the 5-bay expansion unit and went to extend my existing partition with all the space. Bit difficult and this is what caused me to upgrade the firmware. Older firmware had a 16TB (something in that range) limit and this was tied to the filesystem version. In upgrading I had to create a new volume on the expansion unit, copy all files to that, and then extend that volume across the 'old' disks. Bit of a hassle but in the end it worked and the difficulty was more in waiting for TBs of information to copy rather than actually figuring out how to do this.
