Superior Performance

The Synology DS1513+ is built for speed. With dual core CPU and expandable RAM capacity, the DS1513+ is ideal for the mission critical tasks of SMBs as well as the most intensive applications from data-encryption to video-transcoding. With link aggregation, Synology DS1513+ can deliver up to an average 350.94MBps reading and 202.34MBps writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows® environment. 1

Resilient and Reliable

In addition to superior performance, the DS1513+ is built for reliability. Four LAN ports provide redundancy in the event of unexpected hardware failure while hot swappable drives also help to minimize system downtime during drive replacement. Furthermore, passive cooling technology eliminates the dependency upon a dedicated processor cooling fan. Should a fan fail, built-in redundancy mechanisms will spin up functional fan(s) to improve ventilation.

Uninterrupted availability is a critical goal for all businesses; however, many businesses worldwide still remain unprepared for disaster. Synology High Availability (SHA) can ensure seamless transition between clustered servers in the event of server failure with minimal impact to applications to decrease the risk of unexpected interruptions and costly downtime.

Unparalleled Flexibility

As your data storage needs grow, Synology's DS1513+ can grow with you. The DS1513+ can be connected to dedicated expansion units for additional storage on the fly, growing capacity with minimal effort. When paired with two DX513 expansion units 1 through specially designed eSATA connectors, raw capacity can be as high as 75TB.

Feature-Rich Business Applications

Put your data to work with Synology's DS1513+. With Windows ACL and LDAP support DS1513+ fits easily into any existing workgroup environment, providing detailed access control and efficient privilege settings. A wealth of SMB applications including printer sharing, VPN server, ERP software, mail server, web server, anti-virus, and network video surveillance, allows a single Synology DS1513+ to replace several pieces of traditional hardware and helps to maximize your productivity while keeping cost and effort to a minimum.

Easy Backup Solutions

To protect your critical business data, DS1513+ can become a centralized backup target for consolidating fragmented and unstructured information across your network through a range of options. PC users can backup to DS1513+ with Synology's Data Replicator, while DS1513+ also fully supports Mac OS X®'s native Apple® Time Machine®. Synology's own backup wizard can back up information to another Synology NAS or any rsync server, with the option of using an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA. The wizard can also back up your information to the cloud, including Amazon® S3, Glacier, and STRATO HiDrive.

iSCSI and Virtualization Ready

With the iSCSI support in DSM, the Synology DS1513+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. It is the ideal alternative to SAN solution for businesses. Affordable and costeffective,iSCSI allows SMB users to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.

Energy Efficient Design

Synology DiskStation are designed and developed with energy efficiency in mind. Compared with the average PC counterparts, Synology DS1513+ consumes only 51 watts in operation. Wake on LAN/WAN and scheduled power on/off features can further reduce power consumption and operation costs. HDD hibernation can be configured to take effect automatically when the system has been inactive for a specified period of time to save energy and extend hard disk life. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges the responsibility of a global citizen and works continually to reduce the environmental impact of every product.

1. Performance figures could vary on different environments.
2. DS1513+ supports up to two Synology DX513/DX213, sold separately.

5 out of 5 eggsquality

Pros: straight solid quality. this is a real nice nas box. i do not need four 1G network ports at my home network but it has them. i really like the fans blowing cool air over my new set of five seagate 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s hard drives i got at 'black friday' sale with this. i was pretty happy when i got five of the 3G seagate drives during 'black friday' as i was going to pay for 2G seagate drives. device looks good too.

Cons: well i did have to mess around with this thing a bunch to get it installed. hint: go get the synology assistant and learn how to do a reset and a hard reset if you get the 'can't login' error. yes it was a hassle but not to bad. is worth it once it is installed for sure.

Other Thoughts: this upgraded my old seagate 1T two hard drive mirrored nas box which was slow old and could only lose one drive before data loss. i ran raid 6 with this which can lose two drives before data is lost.. very happy i got this.

3 out of 5 eggsGood but noisy

Pros: It's a solid unit. I loaded this NAS with 5 HGST 4 TB drives on a RAID 5. Setup was easy. DSM is great and updates regularly. This unit is easily accessible from my PC, Macbook pro and Samsung phone. I love it.

Cons: The tray doors vibrate and can get very noisy. I have to run my fingers along the front panel to stop the noisy. It's a temporary fix. For a NAS of this cost you'd expect it to run silently - which it would if the trays weren't loose.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat NAS

Pros: easy to setup, has a hard drive check to make sure that the drive you are using are not bad. I used the 5 Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2tb drives. not one bad drive. Stay away from western digital drives 1tb or bigger. i am running in raid 6, my total space is 10tb, my usable space is 6tb. i loose 4 tb for the raid 6. but i can lose two drive and still keep my data. great apps, i was able to download and install the anti-virus with very little trouble. i have it set to run every sunday. it automatic updates itself and then runs the scan. has a ton of other features that i do not use. all i needed was a place to store software, photos, video etc. They update the software/firmware about once a month. you can set it up to automatic update or send you an email letting you know that an update is ready.

Cons: i put this unit on its own UPS. i bought a Tripp Lite SMART1500LCDT 1500VA 900W UPS Back Up Smart Tower LCD AVR 120V USB Coax RJ45 and the unit does not see the UPS. I am hoping that it will at some point. i sent about 1600.00 on this unit, the drives, RAM, and the UPS. i wanted to make sure i protected it.

Other Thoughts: over all and am very happy with this unit. i wanted a fileserver without the overhead of running a server. this fits my needs to the letter. i would recommend this to anyone needing any type of network storage. be sure to read Synology website for a list of apps. it does alot more than i use it for. i set the cooling fans to the high setting and i can not heard it from accross the room. i can hear it if it is asleep and i wake it up. but is for only a couple of seconds. its not loud. Also you can access the nas from anywhere.
i also updated the RAM. the RAM's newegg item number is 9SIA0ZX1926852. this is the RAM i used for the DS1513+. its booted and saw the RAM.

4 out of 5 eggsFast Product with Some Issues

Pros: I have been using this product since December 2011.

This product allows very fast file access. Better than my go-to Netgear ReadyNAS products, so I rate it as a good performer.

Synology claims that this unit is compatible with Windows DeltaCopy (Rsync for Windows OS). This would be a huge bonus. I have never tried this so can't confirm that it works. The usability of DeltaCopy can be dependent on NAS firmware ... for example: I had it working with my Netgear boxes until a NAS firmware upgrade broke it. So try it during your return period if interested in this ability and be aware there may be issues down the road.

Built-in ability to upload to the You-Know-Who S3 Cloud is great.

Cons: The interface, though it looks intuitive, is awkward. It's difficult to find what you need without endless browsing through the menus.

In 2011, this unit advertised the inclusion of a form of Rsync called Synology Sync which claimed to be faster. I notice this is now missing from their current product description, and they just mention Rsync. I have found that Synology's Rsync implementation can generate unnecessary errors. I use it to sync an onsite NAS with an identical offsite unit. There are daily connection error warnings (note: I do NOT get errors using Rsync and Netgear ReadyNAS products.) Since the client for whom I installed this is alerted on errors, the alerts lead to endless emails of concern. Additionally, Synology Sync does not support a PULL form of synchronization like native Rsync. This means that the offsite NAS needs either a static IP address, or a dynamic DNS subscription (an added annual expense.) Though the unit supposedly supports Rsync, I have never been able to set it up in PULL mode, and instruction on how to configure rsync are actually for Synology Sync. I suspect that this confusion led to references for Synology Sync being dropped from their marketing material.

Plastic construction feels cheap compared to my metal Netgear products.

Other Thoughts: This unit makes a fast file serving NAS box. It has enough features to keep it interesting. I can recommend it highly as an in-house NAS storage device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: Very easy to set up. The software is 1st CLASS,
Setting up security is a snap,
Price is good for what you get.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I used 5 Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB drives. It does take a while for the verification. This NAS is very fast. Makes my old CIsco NAS look like a piece of junk.

1 out of 5 eggsShipping with no protection??

Pros: Advanced NAS. Looking forward to using it.

Cons: I was floored to see that newegg delivered this expensive nas in the Synology box with no outer box. Usually everything I receive from newegg is well packed but not this time. The NAS was delivered in the Synology box. The box was not sealed. Simply slapped the shipping label on the outside and sent it. POOR shipping for such an expensive NAS. Very disappointed in your shipping Newegg. Especially since I spent the extra money to expedite my shipping in 2 days.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this NAS!

Pros: This thing is FAST! It can saturate a GigE link w/o even blinking. Also, the expansion capability is is pretty hard to argue with. The software is intuitive and my experience with Synology support has been nothing short of great.

Cons: It's a bit of a pricey drive cage.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to upgrade from a DS409slim I've had for the last 5 years and I've got to say this is a substantial upgrade. The CPU is barely doing anything currently, and I'm looking forward to leveraging the drive space to collapse my 409 as well the few external drives I've had to expand things onto.

Once my move is complete, I am looking forward to connecting this to my network with multiple bonded links.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect NAS

Pros: Faster than my Windows server. This is the second one of these I've setup. We're using them primarily as file servers. They run quiet and cool. Setup time only took about 30 minutes but it took all night to format the 5 - 2TB drives I put in. For a small business needing to share files and have central storage this thing is a no-brainer. It's small, clean, and simple.

Cons: None I can think of so far.

Other Thoughts: In this box I used 5 - Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM. They seem to be running consistently at 91 degrees which is cooler than my Windows server. The hybrid RAID feature is awesome. I can have 2 disks fail at the same time and my data is still safe. Built in remote administration is nice. Remote file access with WEBDav isn't too hard to setup either as long as you can get your router to forward the ports.

5 out of 5 eggsThe DS1513+ is a SNAP

Pros: I have only very good things to say about this unit. The packing was good, installing the 5 drives was very simple. Even getting the unit up and working was actually easier than I expected base on what others have said. This box does way more than I'm using it for. There are plenty of apps available beyond what I using.

Cons: Could be less expensive is the only negative thing I can say

Other Thoughts: I now have room for backups for my PCs & Servers.
I also have over 1K movies, many thousands of songs, plus files that would be grief to lose and it's saved with fault tolerance. YES. Currently I'm using 3 WD 3TB RED drives and 2 WD 4TB drives. I've only used about 23% of capacity. I guess the 3TB drives could be swapped with 4TB drives at some point but no need for a long while.

This box comes with a great OS for managing the NAS and some cool apps. Give it your email and it will send notifications in case something happens, I tested it and it works. If you're on the fence and it's in your budget, do it.
