1 out of 5 eggsShipping with no protection??

Pros: Advanced NAS. Looking forward to using it.

Cons: I was floored to see that newegg delivered this expensive nas in the Synology box with no outer box. Usually everything I receive from newegg is well packed but not this time. The NAS was delivered in the Synology box. The box was not sealed. Simply slapped the shipping label on the outside and sent it. POOR shipping for such an expensive NAS. Very disappointed in your shipping Newegg. Especially since I spent the extra money to expedite my shipping in 2 days.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this NAS!

Pros: This thing is FAST! It can saturate a GigE link w/o even blinking. Also, the expansion capability is is pretty hard to argue with. The software is intuitive and my experience with Synology support has been nothing short of great.

Cons: It's a bit of a pricey drive cage.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to upgrade from a DS409slim I've had for the last 5 years and I've got to say this is a substantial upgrade. The CPU is barely doing anything currently, and I'm looking forward to leveraging the drive space to collapse my 409 as well the few external drives I've had to expand things onto.

Once my move is complete, I am looking forward to connecting this to my network with multiple bonded links.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect NAS

Pros: Faster than my Windows server. This is the second one of these I've setup. We're using them primarily as file servers. They run quiet and cool. Setup time only took about 30 minutes but it took all night to format the 5 - 2TB drives I put in. For a small business needing to share files and have central storage this thing is a no-brainer. It's small, clean, and simple.

Cons: None I can think of so far.

Other Thoughts: In this box I used 5 - Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM. They seem to be running consistently at 91 degrees which is cooler than my Windows server. The hybrid RAID feature is awesome. I can have 2 disks fail at the same time and my data is still safe. Built in remote administration is nice. Remote file access with WEBDav isn't too hard to setup either as long as you can get your router to forward the ports.

5 out of 5 eggsThe DS1513+ is a SNAP

Pros: I have only very good things to say about this unit. The packing was good, installing the 5 drives was very simple. Even getting the unit up and working was actually easier than I expected base on what others have said. This box does way more than I'm using it for. There are plenty of apps available beyond what I using.

Cons: Could be less expensive is the only negative thing I can say

Other Thoughts: I now have room for backups for my PCs & Servers.
I also have over 1K movies, many thousands of songs, plus files that would be grief to lose and it's saved with fault tolerance. YES. Currently I'm using 3 WD 3TB RED drives and 2 WD 4TB drives. I've only used about 23% of capacity. I guess the 3TB drives could be swapped with 4TB drives at some point but no need for a long while.

This box comes with a great OS for managing the NAS and some cool apps. Give it your email and it will send notifications in case something happens, I tested it and it works. If you're on the fence and it's in your budget, do it.

5 out of 5 eggsWow

Pros: Amazing lil box. This thing is WAY more than a place to put your stuff.
I purchased with 2 WD 3TG reds to start, and in less than 20 min had a volume created and a share to move files to.
IT gets better!
This thing has 4 Nics, so i put 2 of em in LACP and teamed the intel pro nics on my desktop. (you need to use a managed switch for this)
The other 2 nics I placed on separate vlans and used them for ISCSI. I had 3 1TB drives left over from my desktop, so i placed them in the DS for just for kicks. Created a 2 TB disk group and carved out a LUN and boom my desktop has a "local" iscsi drive with MPIO just like the data-center at work.
All that advanced config stuff aside, the features that sold me is it ability to do server tasks so i can retire the giant desktop thats been running for 5 years straight in the spare bedroom.
Its running a PLEX server, an Ip cam DVR, and a headless crashplan backup. This thing is a lil workhorse. and so far I'm thrilled with it.

Cons: pricey, a little bit loud at times

3 out of 5 eggsDSM Software need work

Pros: decent h/w. good performance. but have several drawback.

Cons: DSM software looks nice but very buggy. I urge you to review their User Forum to see a list strange issue reported all the users. Their appears to be some major security issue as well. Not recommend if security is an issue.

4 out of 5 eggsUpgrade???

Pros: Compact design, upgrade-able RAM, multiple LAN ports, USB 3.0 & eSATA ports. Easy to use interface.

Cons: No included manual or software.

Other Thoughts: After struggling with a Seagate Black Armor NAS for over 4 years, and dealing with multiple failed drives and slow slow SLOW transfers and recovery times, I finally got fed up after having drive after drive either disappear or fail. I researched this Synology DS1513+ and decided it would best fit my needs. And I was not disappointed, initialized three new 3TB WD NAS RED drives in less than 15 minutes, Let me set up users, rules, volumes, and map the drives to my computers all in less then 1 hour.
Started copying backed up data back onto the array via the USB 3.0 port on the NAS at very respectable speeds. However transferring files over my network totally blew me away, it was phenomenal. a 1TB video file took less than 30 seconds on the Synology over my 1GB network when it took 3-4 minutes on the old Seagate!! So far I'm very happy with it, and fully expect to add the expansion units as I need to increase my storage capacity!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: I've been running a DS1511 unit for 4-ish years now. Mostly the same model since I've upgraded the firmware to latest. Has more features than I could possibly use and they all work flawlessly. Automatic backup, streaming log files from routers, remote access to services, DDNS at times, e-mail notifications, streaming security camera feeds, etc etc. Very quiet and very stable. Highly recommended.

Cons: More of a caution for older DS units: At one point I purchased the 5-bay expansion unit and went to extend my existing partition with all the space. Bit difficult and this is what caused me to upgrade the firmware. Older firmware had a 16TB (something in that range) limit and this was tied to the filesystem version. In upgrading I had to create a new volume on the expansion unit, copy all files to that, and then extend that volume across the 'old' disks. Bit of a hassle but in the end it worked and the difficulty was more in waiting for TBs of information to copy rather than actually figuring out how to do this.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS1513+

Pros: Performs as advertised. Literally does everything a consumer and small business could imagine a need from a NAS. I got it for the iSCSI and virtualization support. Loads of other apps that work great and can be updated. 4 NICs allow for LACP and multiple VLANs. Everything just worked straight out of the box. The GUI is easy to use and get it up and running. If you have advanced technical knowledge it enables the higher end features and customizations easily. Love this product.

Cons: Can be tricky to find a switch that works with LACP, link aggregation. Follow their compatibility chart. I found a cheap one elsewhere that supposedly supported it. It did, but only after a firmware flash. Not Synology's problem though that is a switch issue. No real cons with the device itself. Love it so far.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you get a battery backup on their supported list and configure the autoshutdown on powerloss. If you leave write caching on (which you should for performance) you can lose data if the power goes out, which could potentially lose all your data. No biggie if you have the UPS on and it shut the system down when the battery get's low. Also good idea to get NAS aware hard drives like Western Digital Reds. I used 5 - 4 TB drives for usable space of about 14 TB when RAID 5. I use this for my file server, and also for iSCSI storage for my Hyper-V cluster. Love the MPIO it supports. Great for my home lab and testing stuff. This thing just works and easily at that.
