5 out of 5 eggsGreat powerful NAS

Pros: This is an extremely fast and capable NAS. I have had zero glitches or issues of any kind. Synology creates patches to correct any security holes or issues very fast so I know that this will be up to date and secure for a long time. I am using this for a NAS, Web server, Photo Sharing site and a VPN into my home network. This NAS handles all of those services very well and is very speedy at all of them. In fact I can fully saturate my Gigabit connection to the NAS meaning that the NAS is not the bottleneck in performance which is what I was hoping to get. The Synology Hybrid Raid is also awesome since it allows me to start out with a couple of HDD's and I can seamlessly upgrade to more HDD's in the future with no data loss on the array..

Cons: The price is a little high but I guess you do get what you pay for here. Also you cannot add an expansion unit if you run out of space on this NAS.

Other Thoughts: I got this to replace a different brand's NAS that had very terrible firmware and I can tell you that this was the best decision I made and I am very glad I got this Synology NAS. I would highly recommend this brand to anyone and in fact I have a co-worker that got one on my recommendation and is extremely pleased with his as well.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't do it

Pros: None that I could see. Cheap is only a plus if it works

Cons: Most devices I've ever bought have a default IP and you access the GUI via browser. This unit comes with no IP, no OS and no firmware. It's just a box into which you put your own hard drives. According to their support (for whom I was on hold 48 minutes), you have to download the OS, install their software on your PC, connect the box directly to your PCs network port, use the software to determine the box's auto-config address an, I guess, use the same software to pump the OS into the box. I pretty much gave up on him after he told me there was no OS and I had to download it before going offline and connecting the box to my PCs network jack. I'm returning this puppy and buying a real NAS.

Other Thoughts: I can't imagine it would have cost much more to put a firmware GUI in there with a default address, my $50 router had that.

5 out of 5 eggsEGGGSELLANT!!!!!

Pros: Very simple setup. Lots of features. Always works. Just what I needed. Best of all, other than updates it needs virtually no maintenance. Love the feature of having it plugged into a UPS and allows you to adjust it to your needs.

Cons: Would be nice if Synology added a little more Help info in the DSM software. BUT, the DSM software even 5.0+ is excellant and easy to use.

Other Thoughts: I loaded (3) ST4000VN000 drives in and fired it up. Quickly went through the setup and then let it run parity checks. Parity checks took nearly 2 full days. Two weeks later I added a fourth drive of the same model and enlarged my Volume. I used SHR I. Excellant little machine.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Solid Intermediate NAS

Pros: Extremely easy to get online and setup the basic file sharing. The DSM 5.0 software is phenomenal and easy to use. UPS setup was very easy and only requires your to enable the service. APC BE550G Back-UPS ES is not on the confirmed list but works perfect with this NAS.

Cons: Does require extensive custom configuration in order to properly setup the all of the advanced features you will want. It took about a week to do a full S.M.A.R.T test and build the virtual array from 1 drive to 3 drives to 4 drives when the replacement arrived. The dual NIC/Link aggregation features requires you to have some expensive infrastructure in place to properly implement so the standard home/small business user will likely not have the benefit.

I made a rookie mistake when I had to move this NAS for some home improvements and it allowed me to put the power cable into the NAS with the wrong configuration even with the key on the end. All I knew was that the power supply beeped at me and I could not find an answer online. I double checked the connection and thought it was the UPS functions but that ended up being the issue so make sure you confirm the pins match the key as the receptacle is sideways rather than up and down like you may be used to with most devices.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, my biggest concern was with DOA hard drives when I bought this and Seagate did not disappoint. 1:5 DOA drives with ST4000VN000 which is about average from what I read.

5 out of 5 eggsAt last!

Pros: Everything worked out of the box! I inserted the 4 WD Red 3 TB hard disks, turned on the NAS and here we go! Also connected the NAS to my APC UPS, with the USB cable, and the NAS now understand the messages from the UPS when there are electricity outages. Bottom line: this is a great product!!!

Cons: The casing is all made of plastic. I'm used to metal... Still, so far, nothing broken!

Other Thoughts: The user interface is really easy to use. Once turned on, I was able to see my NAS from any Windows PC. Also streaming to my WDTV Live directly from the NAS. It does all what I need!

4 out of 5 eggsVery good, picky with disks

Pros: This is a terrific NAS. I had earlier maligned it on another review because it failed to install and I had to get the unit RMA'd. Turns out that two of the Seagate hard drives I purchased were faulty and there was nothing wrong with the device at all. This did reveal one oddity / frustration with Synology - see below in the cons section.
The unit installs very easliy, and I have the unit on the DSM 5 beta and was previously running 4.3. I had not issues with it once the hard drive issues were resolved. A big hint with these Synology systems is if the install fails to put 1 disk (and 1 disk only) in slot 4 (not 1, which seems more logical in my mind) to get it to install. This is the only reason I give it a 4 instead of a 5.

Cons: Synology support has a noticable lag time to respond to emails. It took on average 2-3 days to respond to emails during working days. They did not seem to respond during the weekend, but that could have just been average delay - I'm not sure.
No plex support yet on any of the Marvell chipset units, but I am told it's coming.

Other Thoughts: Works well and has a bazillion ulitities built into it. Natively speaks AFP so you can time machine to it. As well, you can plug in a USB to back up your important NAS data.
