3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very easy to set up, Easy to navigate, great as a file server. This thing is a very very good Nas box for storing files.

Cons: Where it lacks is in its media streaming. Has issues steaming over wifi, often stops to buffer. Some 1080p videos even take time to buffer over wired connection. Very picky with what files it does recognize.

Other Thoughts: Overall this product is great for a file server. It's easy to set up, easy to access (lan and over web) the apps are very well thought out. Where it lacks is in processing power, if you have a lot of 180p videos and it needs to teams code them then I would suggest using and actual PC as the transcoder and using this as storage space. If I had to do it over I would not go with the "play" version as that is the only part that doesn't work very well.

Pros: Easy to setup. Installing the hard drives was simple and direct. Took a few seconds to set up the raid, 3 TBytes of Raid 1. Tons of apps on the website

Cons: Still setting this up and I can only comment on lack of understanding on my part for now.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the Job

Pros: Quiet, fast streaming of music and video, streams to my samsung tv, initial setup and joining to the network is quick and easy. Lots of packages available to add functionality (but you're on your own to figure out how to set them up properly).

Cons: Not intuitive, manual/help file is somewhat limited; This is a fault with iTunes but it would be nice to stream iTunes movies from the iTunes server function (you can convert/export the iTunes movie to a standard file and stream that way, but it's extra space and time spent).

Other Thoughts: Integration with PC seems better then integration with MAC. Being able to map a consistent drive in PC allowed me to move my iTunes files over and then update my iTunes library to my new mapped drive so functions are native. My Fiance has a Mac Air and it's cumbersome for her to manage her files (seems more like an OSX limitation) as the diskstation doesn't appear as a native drive it limits functionality.

5 out of 5 eggsNice unit so far.

Pros: 1. DSM 5 is fantastic and solid.
2. Ability to stream movies from home.
3. Work with Chromecast and Samsung TV.
4. Google Drive cloud sync works great.
5. Solid storage device.
6. Photo and Audio Station. Who needs those other cloud providers. Create your own cloud.

Cons: None that I have seen so far.

Other Thoughts: I switched from an Asustor AS-302T because it didn't work at all with Cloud Sync and I didn't want to create another Asustor just to do off site backup. The Synology worked great. Most people say that Synology needs an HDMI port and that might be something that they have in the future, but also putting an HDMI port makes the Synology both a Client and a Server. Having the XBMC client on the Asustor made it slower than the Synology. The Asustor apps were not as polished at the Synology. I switched to Asustor, but then after months of use I am back with Synology.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology - Initial review

Pros: Ease of setup - Installing two bare drives was easy. I had some misgivings about the EZ setup guide that was no more than a few pictures but ... they are right! It is that easy. After a misstep of not double checking that a second hard drive was fully seated (my haste), i was ready to get up and running with the device.

I went to the website (as advertised) and went through the step-by-step setup. The device detected my network (as well as other devices) and automatically set all of the settings for remote access once i made my choices.

Flexibility/Use. I am extremely impressed by the number of FREE applications. The interface took a few seconds to get used to; with that, it was extremely easy installing each of the extensions, creating folders for my non-media data, and transferring data.

Cross-platform use. So far, I have loaded about 30k files (pictures, music, documents). PC mapping to the drives was simple and fast. Mac also had no problem connecting. Similarly, I had no problems getting the ipad/phone apps to connect to the devices. Excellent instructions.

Connectivity. Within the lan, connectivity is no problem at all. I have not tested printers or external drives (connected to the Synology array) but will get to that in a few days.

Off site, i had absolutely no problem connecting to the volume and accessing various types of files - FAST (see comments below).

I'm still working on the Apple TV and other media players but those were secondary. I'll update.

Cons: When you total up the cost of the bare-bones storage and disks, it isn't the cheapest. Then again... the cheapest don't work and aren't reliable. So I cannot really call that an issue.
The Photo Station uploader seems to go a bit slowly but maybe that has something to do with having nearly 37k photos! The results are great so, again, cannot really call that an issue...

Other Thoughts: Rarely do i give a review of a product. This is a stand-out product that really deserves praise, not just on the hardware but software/firmware side.

I run a business from home and data integrity is critical. I have a SBS for exchange and (formerly) file serving. This was backed up to an attached drive. I also had a raid drive (originally Stora ... retired) that was recently replaced with WD MyClouds. After one of the latest firmware "upgrades," external access was killed and transfer speeds went to "when it decides to connect." App connectivity was virtually non-existent. Needless to say, after a couple of weeks of trying everything, I decided that the best course of action was to rip out the drives and use the cases as book-ends. That's when I found a Synology review...

Criticisms about the Synology being complicated are only half right. If you want an "out of the box" solution, it works. It has the flexibility to be as complex as you want it to be. I wanted both a media server and reliable storage/back-up solution. It does all of that without even seeming to breath hard.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Home NAS

Pros: I have two of these, a DS213 and a DS214 Play; but since this review is on the 214 I will focus on that. This device is loaded with features, plenty for any home user like myself. I am using 2 – 3TB Western Digital Red hard drives configured in a Hybrid Raid. I bought this for one specific purpose and that is to store my Blu Ray and DVD collection and stream across all of my devices from my TV’s to my iPad and phone. To start out, yes it will transcode full 1080p, but it will not stream full 1080p across the web. I am running Plex media server on my 214 and by the way it not pre-installed as it is on the 213. DVD’s of course are no problem, but if you want to stream your Blu Ray’s you will have to lower the resolution after you rip them. If you lower the resolution to 720p 1152x656, you will not have any problems streaming to any of your devices Dolby Digital or DTS audio and a MKV video format there is no problem. You can try low resolution 1080p which is 1366x768 62 fps, even with my broadband service some movies would not stream without a lot of buffering and I have a lot of bandwidth. I use Handbrake to edit my movies which is a great piece of software and it’s free. Watching full 1080p across your local network is not a problem. I have read articles where some people have had problems streaming across their local networks and usually this is a router problem. Surveillance Station and Cloud Station are the two other features that I love about this device and they work flawlessly. All in all, I am very pleased with this device and would recommend it to anyone looking for a NAS for your home.

Cons: Will not stream full 1080p over the web.

5 out of 5 eggsawesome NAS

Pros: Easy setup and a ton of features. This thing can do SO much. Trans-coding of media: audio and video

Cons: I wanted to initially say that the configuration and features were a little difficult, but than I thought about the target market that Synology is shooting for. This is not for noobs. The overwhelming set of features and settings should not be a CON. This is what you get with a NAS of this caliber.
The only con that I could legitimately think of was the RAID setup. The setup just assumed that you'll use SHR (Synology's hybrid RAID), but there are other options. I don't know much (really nothing) about RAID and I wish they had explained better the pros/cons of the different RAID setups during the initial setup.

Other Thoughts: It's been about two days since I had this thing running. I"m so excited to try some of the additional features/packages. I haven't tried the media server portion, but it's one of those features/functions that I definitely want to get working

4 out of 5 eggsGood quality NAS

Pros: Very good home NAS for the money. CPU and memory is sufficient for everyday tasks. Transfers rates are acceptable for 1 Gigabit. I am using 2 - 3TB WD Red drives in Raid1 configuration. ~2.73 TB usable after formatting. So far, so good.

Cons: Full 1080p with DTS audio is not supported. Playback on IOS devices choppy.

Other Thoughts: Wish this DS214play would actually steam and encode all 1080p files as advertised. Plex is not officially supported, but needed!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: This thing is great. I used it to backup all my photos and home videos as well as storing my dvd collection. Setup was easy. Your part in the setup takes no time at all but it does take a very long time to run the consistency check. I used 2 4TB hard drives and to complete the consistency check actually took about two days. However, it runs in the background and I was able to still do whatever I wanted on it in the meantime. It just slows things down a bit until it finishes, but it wasn't really a big deal. The amount of space I have created now is really unbelievable. I have about 30k photos and about 300GB of home video stored on it. Plus I've started on my DVD collection- 100 DVDs so far (converting to mp4 to be able to stream with my Hopper) and I have only used about 12.5% of the storage space available using a RAID 1 setup. At this rate, I will never fill this thing up. If I do, I can always expand with an add on unit or just attach an external hard drive. There are tons of useful apps that allow me to access all content anywhere, anytime. I couldn't be more happy.

Cons: none
