1 out of 5 eggsDevice stopped working, bad support

Pros: It worked for 9 months

Cons: Horrible tech support! Wasted a lot of time and money (brought a new hard drive because they said hdd crashed)

Other Thoughts: Regret spending the extra money for a device that I though was quality.

3 out of 5 eggsGood in the Right Cicumstances

Pros: Simple to set up, No licensing fees, Enterprise grade reliability, Tons of Features

Cons: Under Powered, May not work reliably with all 'supported' software packages.

Other Thoughts: I have deployed a number of Synology NAS devices from the high end to the low end of the catalog, which the DS214se firmly fits in. For the most part I have been happy with them. On the bright side the high end and low end devices both run the same OS. In short you have the ability to do just about anything with the cheap NASs that you can with the rack mount ones we use in the data center.

BUT...and as I found out recently its a big BUT:

In these low-end devices start to show their lack of power when you attempt to use some of the more advanced features of the Synology OS. We discovered this as we attempted to set up file syncronization between two DS214se NASs only to find the under-powered hardware could not keep up. Our client had a 400GB file store that needed to be syned between their offices. That is not massive by today's standards but still its a large chunk of data. Both the 'Cloud Station' and 'BitTorrent Sync' packages ate up all available system resources and the process would grind to a halt.

The last chance we had was the Cloud Sync package which allows syncing between the NAS and a cloud provider like Dropbox. Thankfully, this seems to be working for us, however it was very disappointing that the two packages that were free did not. Now we are forced to pay a monthly fee.

Anyway, Synology should know about stuff like this and tell users of their low end devices that they may not work with these packages if their shares are over 'x' gigabytes.

5 out of 5 eggsIt just works

Pros: I paired this with two 2TB WD Black disks after my PC-based NAS went down. After getting all of the data onto it I was able to easily put the second disk in to get redundancy.

The read/write speeds listed are accurate and while not phenomenal, it's still more than adequate for most.

It's dead silent and uses practically no electricity. It will pay for itself in electricity in less than a year versus my old PC-based NAS.

Cons: Setup takes a bit long with the initialization.

I'm not thrilled with the entire cloud (someone else's computer) integration so I declined joining all of that rubbish. If I need remote access, I'll just VPN into my SonicWALL.

The DS File app for iOS is bloated and takes up a ton of space but that's not the fault of this device.

Other Thoughts: People griping about the speed..........

If you wanted fiber channel speed, you should've bought a better device.

3 out of 5 eggsLow end entry level performer

Pros: Excellent cost savings. Excellent Features. Excellent Add-on software packages.

Cons: Below Low-end Processing power ... far, far, far too little memory ... no way to upgrade memory or processor.

Other Thoughts: This unit barely qualifies as a low-end File Server. My CPU Utilization hangs out at 99% and Memory consumption never falls below 85%. Has good functionality but extremely poor speed.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Home Storage

Pros: Easy set up that will have you up and running in about 15 minutes. I bought two 1 TB Western Digital Red hard drives to put in mine and I'm getting transfer speeds of up to 60 MB/s.

Mobile apps are also available so you can view pictures, music, and video on your mobile device at any time.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I wish I would have bout larger hard drives to put in from the start.

4 out of 5 eggsMy second DiskStation

Pros: Basic setup is very quick and easy. Reliable and quiet. Excellent support for TimeMachine. Mobile apps (DSAudio, DSPhoto) work well.

Cons: Technical support info on the web is scattered and, as a result, the learning curve can be steep. Getting everything (which is a lot!) out of the unit takes a lot of work.

Other Thoughts: This is my second Synology DiskStation. I've owned a DS-212J for over a year. I have two locations, and this DS214SE is for my home use. The primary use is for backup of our MacBooks. Secondary uses include media storage (audio) and personal cloud usage. Future usage includes web server and web services and possible home automation and monitoring.

The latest version of DiskStation (V5) is a big improvement. The EZ-Internet works very well, providing your router and ISP don't present roadblocks. For this installation, I have an AirPort Extreme and a cable modem and the automated setup worked flawlessly. At my other location, I have a flaky ISP (their DNS is so bad I have to use the Google DNS) and use a Belkin router and I have yet to troubleshoot the connection issues.

One word of advice: it take a while to configure a second disk, it's much faster to do an initial installation of two disks.

In general, setting up connectivity can be tricky. I've yet to be able to make the web server accessible from the outside world. Ideally, I want my own web server, mail server and DNS. Getting all these to work takes a lot of detective work. This product would benefit greatly from a comprehensive guide to setting this up. As it is, there are bits and pieces of instruction in various KB articles and forum postings and it can feel a bit like chasing one's tail.

Having said all that, the automated backup and media storage alone make this a worthwhile investment. My wife's MacBook crashed during an OSX update and it was very easy to restore from TimeMachine.

5 out of 5 eggsBest NAS I’ve ever owned

Pros: Was very easy to take apart and add my drives
The setup was essentially automatic and effortless and it even updated its software and formatted the drives for me.

Has the best NAS software I’ve ever used. Resembles more of a computer than a NAS as it has:
• Icons that can be moved around and replaced as you see fit
• Widgets showing current utilization of stuff like the ram and CPU
• Has a program called resource monitor which is essentially like task manger in Windows
• Can customizable login screen and wallpaper
• It supports encryption on your files
• It can do FTP and even make your own cloud storage
• It supports user control management, permissions and even active directory
• It also has traffic limits and disk quotas
• It can be remotely accessed
• Has a built in firewall and auto block functionality
• Can setup notifications via text/email to notify you if the NAS has any problems
• Has task scheduling abilities
• Has fan controls, temperature monitoring, power controls and even UPS support
• To no surprise it supports external drives but it also supports printers
• It can even host websites and supports PHP

One of the coolest things about this NAS is that it has an app store which provides ways of adding even more functionality such as an antivirus, Plex media server, DNS server, VPN server, etc. To add to this, if an app isn’t in their store it can be manually installed for example that is necessary to get Plex on this device.

Here’s some benchmarks of its performance:
Network File Transfer (100MB):
• Read = 107.71 MB/s
• Write = 50.68 MB/s

Power Consumption
Long Idle: 4.9 Watts
Idle: 14 Watts
Load - Read: 17.2 Watts
Load – Write: 16.9 Watts

Temperature of the hard drives: 97 °F

Cons: It would be better if it was black and not white
The plastic is a little cheap and weak whenever you grab it to pick it up

Other Thoughts: If you want to have your own server but maybe don’t know how to set one up yourself or may want to learn that kind of stuff this is a great choice. As it’s very easy to get going and has a ton of features built in along with additional applications that can be installed later to add even more functionality.

Here’s the hard drives actually total throughput:
• Read = 172.3 MB/s
• Write = 164.0 MB/s

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Affordable NAS

Pros: Fast (for avg home use), easy setup, small, fan is quite.

Cons: Not really a con of the unit, but what drives you choose to put in. If speed is an issue, put in 7200RPM drives. The drives spinning up is a bit loud (catches my attention when it happens). I set the control settings to not power down, personally I'd just as soon the drives stay running 24x7, but they still spin down... not sure if this is WD Black issue or the NAS software, but it really doesn't seem to impact performance much. Other drives may be quieter.

Other Thoughts: I've very happy with the performance and usage (as a straight file sharing and as a slave backup for another Synology system i have). The GUI interface is a pleasure to work with when I compare it to other NAS systems I've used in the past. It's cool that they have all the one-click install options for various apps, but I don't use them. Don't buy this for a small dept. or if you are going to try to use several apps at once (the one-click ones) and people will be hitting it.. the CPU is not made for that and you are going to be disappointed.

For media streaming to 2-3 systems via SMB it is great. The backup feature with another Synology isn't as 'easy' to setup as I would prefer (basically you have to hit 3 different control panel areas to get setup rather than going to just one), but easy enough if you follow online docs.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Nas

Pros: This nas does so much, VPN, Mail Server, host your own websites and do much more

Cons: Takes a bit of reading and patience. To get it the settings right. This is not a turn on and you done nas.
