4 out of 5 eggsHave mine for a year and love it

Pros: It does take some tech knowledge to setup the Ds415play correctly. The transcoding works fine for me when using the DS video apps via chromecast, or on my tablet. I have 5 family members connecting to my DS415play remotely to view my media files. They use the DS video app with chromecast, roku, and web browser,

Cons: CPU processing power is just middle of the road.

Other Thoughts: If you want to use this for a file server. I recommend you try a different model like the DS415+ which has more CPU power and two Ethernet ports for load balancing. But for a multimedia server the DS415play is perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome-NAS

Pros: Easy to set up. Easy to use NAS operating system. (installed with 4 X WD Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB)

Works great with our PS3, XBox360, Apple iOS devices using the Sinology Apps.

Cons: Still trying to figure out how to make the iTunes Media Server to work properly...

Other Thoughts: Will write additional follow up review after a few months of ownership.

4 out of 5 eggsSynology not too bad

Pros: The interface is good, very responsive and the linux places interaction on good priority against normal operation so the WebGUI is fluid even if it costs a few Kbps on your transfers (Which is how I believe it should be). Syno hardly ever needed troubleshooting or maintenance since the box runs solidly and remote Administration for Syno's are pretty much additions and fun rather than maintenance or troubleshooting. RAID 5 in the SHR operates so quickly that the drive almost acts as a slow Sata drive (24 MBps - 80 MBps) even though RAID 5 is usually intended for cold storage rather than an actively used drive.

Cons: DNS issues caused trouble for a while with remote connectivity so remote admin wasn't a guaranteed option. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Cost is high for a 4 bay with a meager atom processor, Syno's always seem to have slower CPU's in comparable price ranges. Media Playback is pretty bad, playability issues frequently. Needed plex on my server to do transcoding because Syno transcoder just couldn't cut it and CPU pegged a lot when it did work which slowed other things down. RAID rebuild test took nearly a week on rebuilding 1 4TB NAS drive from a diskgroup of 3. Photo Station was more of a disappointment than anything, I couldn't give people access to dynamic folders/profiles so I'd have to keep copies of the same folder if I only wanted to share images of a certtain person with somebody.

Other Thoughts: It's a bargain for a device to store your data on but don't expect it to manage or transcode it. The Play was supposed to be for Media but I definitely think the transcoding needs to be investigated more aswell as the Photo/Video station management options. For instance it would be nice to limit my kids to certain PG ratings on the Video station to keep them from staying up late watching Die Hard or something. Also a curfew would be a neat option. As for the Photo station they need to compare it to Picasa/PicasaWeb and see what they can do to catch up to that before I let it manage my photos in the future.

2 out of 5 eggsTranscoding is terrible.

Pros: The base management software is good, and the overall design as a NAS is great.

Cons: Totally feel ripped off by the bad transcoding performance and lack of support. The transcoding quality is not up to snuff.

Other Thoughts: Buy the DS414 or DS415+ instead. Both perform better as a file server, and the processor speed is more important if the transcoding does not work.

1 out of 5 eggsBAD BATCH! DON'T BUY

Pros: I HAVE A 1813 THAT WORKS GREAT.
IF IT WORKS THEY ARE GREAT.

Cons: BAD CUSTOMER SUPPORT!
JUST HOPE IT WORKS SO YOU DON'T NEED TO CALL THEM. THEY SPEAK LIKE THEY ARE ASLEEP.
CONFIGURATION IS LOST EVERY TIME YOU REBOOT.
STAY AWAY!

5 out of 5 eggsHappy with my choice so far

Pros: This was extremely easy to set up. Love the software. Installed 2 WD RED 4tb drives and 2 WD RED 3tb drives. Absolutely no problems getting up and running. Love the DS Video and DS Photo apps. Still learning how best to use everything. The unit sits on a shelf under my desk and I barely hear it running.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Was thinking about using Plex, but have decided I can do what I need with the DS apps. I looked at this and and the QNAP equivalent which is more expensive. Very happy with my decision after 3 weeks of operation.
