Synology
Synology

Quad-core CPU for blazing-fast performance

DS1815+ is powered by a quad-core CPU running at 2.4 GHz. Combined with 2GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 6GB), it delivers blazing-fast performance over 450 MB/s reading and 412 MB/s writing.1 That much power makes it easy for DS1815+ to multitask and provide consistently high throughput to all connected clients.

Synology

Fast encrypted data transmission with AES-NI

Encrypting data is essential to a healthy security policy. Equipped with a dedicated hardware encryption engine, DS1815+ is the ideal digital locker for sensitive data; files and folders are encrypted on the fly without any perceived performance loss. DS1815+ delivers encrypted data transmission speeds over 450 MB/s reading and 190 MB/s writing.

Quad LAN ports for failover and Link Aggregation support

Equipped with four Ethernet ports featuring failover and Link Aggregation support, DS1815+ ensures continual network uptime even if LAN connection malfunction occurs on one port, reducing the chance of service disruption and costly downtime. Link Aggregation improves connection speeds beyond the limits of a single network cable or port.

Synology

Robust scalability up to 108TB

RS2416+/RS2416RP+ supports a combination of hard drives and read/write-optimized SSD cache, boosting throughput efficiently while minimizing cost per gigabyte. With full SSD cache reading and writing support, RS2416+/RS2416RP+ offers a significant reduction in I/O latency without crippling your budget. Synology
Synology

Seamless storage solution for virtualization environments

DS1815+ provides seamless storage solutions for virtualization environments, including VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V. With VMware vSphere® 5 & VAAI integration, DS1815+ helps offload specific storage operations and optimizes computation power in VMware environments. Windows ODX support speeds up data manipulation as the data transfer is offloaded. iSCSI also lets SMB users consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.

Fit into business environments easily

With the support of Windows AD, LDAP, and Domain Trust, DS1815+ enables seamless account integration. The User Home feature can automatically create a "home" folder for every user account to minimize the administrator's effort in repeatedly creating "home" folders for all accounts. Windows ACL support on DS1815+ allows IT administrators to fine tune access controls and set up privileges to files and folders on DS1815+ through the familiar Windows user interface. With compatibility for major protocols, DS1815+ can eliminate server configuration overhead and enhance IT administrators’ efficiency.

Synology

Optimize storage management

With Synology's Storage Manager, DS1815+ allows for flexible storage deployment and utilization. You can optimize RAID configuration with Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) while providing redundant data protection. Other features such as multiple volumes on single RAID and Global Hot Spare also greatly enhance management efficiency and fit deployment of any kind.

Synology

Synology CMS (Central Management System)

For enterprises with more than one Synology NAS server, CMS offers the flexibility and convenience for IT administrators to manage all of them from a single point of entry. Through a simple interface, you can obtain a clear overview on resource consumption and logs, helping you identify any issue right away. With group policies, CMS can do much more for your daily tasks. Once a NAS joins a group, it will automatically adopt its rules and behave as intended, without extra configuration.

Synology

All-in-one server

With just one DS1815+, it's possible to handle a vast amount of tasks. DS1815+ helps your company gain a competitive edge by acting as your multi-function server. Directory Server provides LDAP service, while DNS and DHCP packages allow you to host a domain name server and automate network IP assignment at no extra cost. With Synology's Proxy Server, you can regulate content access and monitor who can access which website while saving bandwidth. You can host up to 30 websites with Web Station, safeguard the office environments with Surveillance Station, send and receive mails using your own email domain with Mail Station, share printing capability with Printer Server, make DS1815+ act as a VPN server to access company’s resources remotely, and more.

Synology

Ensuring business continuity

Uninterrupted availability is a critical goal for all businesses. DS1815+ supports Synology High Availability (SHA) technology which combines an active and passive server into one cluster, the former always mirrored to the latter. The Heartbeat mechanism detects regular "heartbeats" between the two servers. If the main server encounters unexpected downtime, the passive server immediately takes over. With multiple LAN ports, DS1815+ also ensures redundancy in the event of unexpected network failure.

Synology

Effective backup solution

Synology DS1815+ can serve as a centralized backup target. Whether you are a Windows or Mac user, you can back up everything on your computer directly to Synology NAS using Cloud Station. Whenever you modify a file, the changes are backed up to DS1815+ automatically. Mac users also enjoy native Apple® Time Machine support. You can also back up data from your DS1815+ to another DiskStation, rsync servers, external drives, or even Amazon® S3, Glacier cloud service, Microsoft Azure, SFR, and hicloud. "Backup & Replication" allows you to schedule backup tasks and restore the server to any particular point in time, while minimizing storage consumption and processing time by saving only the specific data block that has been changed between versions.

Synology

Increase business productivity with cloud solutions

With comprehensive cloud solutions, DS1815+ lets you create your own private cloud easily. Cloud Station is the perfect package to sync files across multiple devices. Files can be edited in offline mode and later synced to Cloud Station, which keeps up to 32 historical versions, allowing you to restore a file back to previous version or recover deleted files. With the mobile app DS cloud, any change made to a file is automatically synced to your smartphones and tablets. For distributed enterprises, Synology's 2-way sync between different DiskStations ensures employees at different locations share the same information in real-time. IT administrators can handpick individual folders that they want to sync to different devices, manually or automatically based on file format and size. Folders synced by Cloud Station can be encrypted on DSM — no one will be able to access its content without your private key.

Synology

Secure your data

DS1815+ offers advanced security measures to protect you from potential security holes. Security Advisor analyzes system settings, password strength, network preferences and removes any possible malware. AppArmor blocks malicious programs from accessing unauthorized system resources. You can also customize the trust level in Package Center to avoid installing packages from untrusted sources, safeguarding your NAS from unknown or tampered files. In addition, DS1815+ provides other security add-ons, such as AES encryption, 2-Step verification, IP block & allow list, Antivirus packages, firewall, and DoS attack prevention.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: It's quite, no fan noise. With Link Aggregation I am getting just over 100MBps on a a 1GB LAN.
You can set up many volumes on the hard drives to use for different projects. Many apps, like video, music and photo folders. I also use it as a email server. Daily backup works great to USB drives. Can start with a couple hard drives and add more as your needs grow.

Cons: Not many, it wasn't free.

Other Thoughts: I have two other Synology NAS devices, DS413j and a DS1813+. I set this one up for my son to edit/create video shows using AVID. They say AVID won't work with this type of server but with careful project management it does work. Just setup projects, media folder and other data in their own folders and MAP them with a drive letter. Avid has no trouble going to the mapped drive and using it. So far two different users are using the server and getting 100MBps connection using a smart switch and Link Aggregation.
For the price a outstanding buy for video rendering and creation.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst NAS and very pleased

Pros: - Stable
- Wealth of 1st and 3rd party software
- Reliable and fast

Cons: - Price
- Upcoming filesystem change
- No easy way to rollback to earlier versions

Other Thoughts: For a very long time I had battled with storage and makeshift solutions before I just decided to take the plunge and invest in a dedicated component.

So far everything has been great and I even recovered from a bad expansion (all my fault btw) with the help of a Synology representative. You are basically paying premium for DSM which is the OS to the unit and it makes administering a breeze.

Now a newer one is being rolled out which is a transition from ext4 to btrfs but for the time being I'm holding out until it proves reliable.

Would definitely recommend and buy another one for a backup to a backup since you can never be too careful even with shr2/raid6.

1 out of 5 eggsNever Again!

Pros: Good device when it works.

Cons: I just lost 18TB of data due to a power outage while an SHR-2 volume was expanding. The worst part is that Synology support has taken .2 weeks to respond, and have been very unhelpful throughout the experience.

Other Thoughts: I am moving all my data to cloud based storage, not worth the investment in a multi-bay device like this.

3 out of 5 eggsTotal Loss?

Pros: This is my second synology device; and I have been a firm believer in running a NAS server. This has been a solid device.

Cons: I have had a Volume Crash during a disk expansion using SHR-2 which should enable a 2 drive failure scenario. I am awaiting to see if Synology can support this, if they do I will regard them favorably.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent. Leader in NAS appliances.

Pros: -Refined, well integrated OS.
-Well tuned performance characteristics
-Thorough UI. Readily accessible, verbose help system
-Feature rich OS
-Expandability options
-Efficient power use
-Excellent 3rd party package integration

Cons: -ext4 file system. This is a nitpick, I previously used a ZFS based NAS, and became quite familiar with its robust, modern design. Imho, ZFS is the ideal file system for a NAS, but the memory/system requirements and sordid licensing (previously open under Solaris) arrangement make it difficult for a commerical product to adopt.
-Expensive box, but I think it is ultimately worth the price of admission
-Had some trouble installing 3rd party packages. Being 3rd party, I was on my own to get them working. Which I did.

Other Thoughts: Previously I had been using an old i5 PC running Nas4Free, and I strongly considered building a home brew ZFS Freeness box with a proper Xeon CPU, ECC ram, etc, but the Synology just made more sense in the end. The cost between the two was a push, but the Synology OS and the refined chassis ultimately made me go with this product.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS1815+

Pros: Took 10-20 min to setup 8 drives 3tb each in a raid 10 array. If you do have questions you can call and I personally got someone right away, although like all support centers there are more knowledgeable individuals than others.

Cons: Wish it had a scheduler for backing up via FTP. You can make a script but its hard to find support with the right coding to make the DiskStation do what you want.

Other Thoughts: Have a DS412+ also and liked it alot. Got this DiskStation for faster speeds and redundancy, so far so good!

5 out of 5 eggsAnother great product from Synology

Pros: This is a great little NAS with upgradability via SATA ports on the back of the unit that allows you to hook 2 additional DX513 with each one adding 5 more HD bays each.

4 Gigabit ports with link aggregation if you have a switch that supports it.

Quod core processor and RAM upgradability.

Runs LINUX.

It took less than an hour to set up, and I put in 8 4TB Dekstar NAS drives in RAID 6.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Not my first Synology device, I also have a DS413J so it was an easy choice to stick with Synology.

In the 2 years I've had the DS413J I've only had to call support once and that was because of my own bone headed careless mistake.

They had it resolved within 24 hours.
