DiskStation DS1515+

Ultra-performance NAS optimized for intensive tasks and encryption

Featuring a quad-core processor, hardware encryption engine, and flawless software integration, DS1515+ is a powerful, expandable 5-bay NAS server that delivers outstanding speed and accelerated data encryption. Easily scalable, the DS1515+ can be equipped with up to 6GB of DDR3 RAM and host up to 90TB of raw capacity with two Synology DX513 units.

Synology
Synology

Quad-core CPU for blazing-fast performance

DS1515+ is powered by a quad-core CPU running at 2.4 GHz. Combined with 2GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable to 6GB), it delivers blazing-fast performance over 450.77 MB/s reading and 396.5 MB/s writing.1 That much power makes it easy for DS1515+ to multitask and provide consistently high throughput to all connected clients.

Synology

Fast encrypted data transmission with AES-NI

Encrypting data is essential to a healthy security policy. Equipped with a dedicated hardware encryption engine, DS1515+ is the ideal digital locker for sensitive data; files and folders are encrypted on the fly without any perceived performance loss. DS1515+ delivers encrypted data transmission speeds over 448.71 MB/s reading and 191.12 MB/s writing.

Quad LAN ports for failover and Link Aggregation support

Equipped with four Ethernet ports featuring failover and Link Aggregation support, DS1515+ ensures continual network uptime even if LAN connection malfunction occurs on one port, reducing the chance of service disruption and costly downtime. Link Aggregation improves connection speeds beyond the limits of a single network cable or port.

Synology

Robust scalability up to 90TB

As your data storage needs grow, DS1515+ can be connected to dedicated DX513 expansion units for additional storage on the fly, growing capacity with minimal effort. With two DX513 expansion units connected through specially designed eSATA connectors, raw capacity can be as high as 90TB.

Synology

Easy installation, hassle-free maintenance

Easy installation and hot-swappable hard drive support ensures easy maintenance and continuous service uptime should a hard drive need replacement. In addition, DS1515+ incorporates a passive cooling design to reduce dependency on the dedicated processor cooling fan, thus mitigating any critical point of failure. When the system detects a fan failure, the built-in redundancy mechanism ensures continuous operation until the replacement fan arrives.

Synology

USB 3.0 and eSATA ensure speedy transfers to external storage

DS1515+ boasts USB 3.0 and eSATA ports to connect to various kinds of external storage devices, while ensuring fast and efficient file transfer speeds. Support for USB 3.0 offers transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps (about 10 times faster than USB 2.0), meaning it takes less time to transfer data to external hard drives, while also consuming less power.

Synology

Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) is a sleek, browser-based operating system running on every DiskStation and RackStation, which makes managing your Synology NAS a breeze. Featuring an intuitive user interface, DSM makes accessing and sharing your data smarter and simpler. Synology's Package Center lets you download and install useful add-on packages designed specifically for individual or business needs, meaning you can enjoy more entertainment in your life or better productivity at work.

Synology
Synology

Seamless storage solution for virtualization environments

DS1515+ provides seamless storage solutions for virtualization environments, including VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V. With VMware vSphere® 5 & VAAI integration, DS1515+ helps offload specific storage operations and optimizes computation power in VMware environments. Windows ODX support speeds up data manipulation as the data transfer is offloaded. iSCSI also lets SMB users consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.

Fit into business environments easily

With the support of Windows AD, LDAP, and Domain Trust, DS1515+ enables seamless account integration. The User Home feature can automatically create a "home" folder for every user account to minimize the administrator's effort in repeatedly creating "home" folders for all accounts. Windows ACL support on DS1515+ allows IT administrators to fine tune access controls and set up privileges to files and folders on DS1515+ through the familiar Windows user interface. With compatibility for major protocols, DS1515+ can eliminate server configuration overhead and enhance IT administrators’ efficiency.

Synology

Optimize storage management

With Synology's Storage Manager, DS1515+ allows for flexible storage deployment and utilization. You can optimize RAID configuration with Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) while providing redundant data protection. Other features such as multiple volumes on single RAID and Global Hot Spare also greatly enhance management efficiency and fit deployment of any kind.

Synology

Synology CMS (Central Management System)

For enterprises with more than one Synology NAS server, CMS offers the flexibility and convenience for IT administrators to manage all of them from a single point of entry. Through a simple interface, you can obtain a clear overview on resource consumption and logs, helping you identify any issue right away. With group policies, CMS can do much more for your daily tasks. Once a NAS joins a group, it will automatically adopt its rules and behave as intended, without extra configuration.

Synology

Ensuring business continuity

Uninterrupted availability is a critical goal for all businesses. DS1515+ supports Synology High Availability (SHA) technology which combines an active and passive server into one cluster, the former always mirrored to the latter. The Heartbeat mechanism detects regular "heartbeats" between the two servers. If the main server encounters unexpected downtime, the passive server immediately takes over. With multiple LAN ports, DS1515+ also ensures redundancy in the event of unexpected network failure.

Synology

All-in-one server

With just one DS1515+, it's possible to handle a vast amount of tasks. DS1515+ helps your company gain a competitive edge by acting as your multi-function server. Directory Server provides LDAP service, while DNS and DHCP packages allow you to host a domain name server and automate network IP assignment at no extra cost. With Synology's Proxy Server, you can regulate content access and monitor who can access which website while saving bandwidth. You can host up to 30 websites with Web Station, safeguard the office environments with Surveillance Station, send and receive mails using your own email domain with Mail Station, share printing capability with Printer Server, make DS1515+ act as a VPN server to access company’s resources remotely, and more.

Synology

Effective backup solution

Synology DS1515+ can serve as a centralized backup target. Whether you are a Windows or Mac user, you can back up everything on your computer directly to Synology NAS using Cloud Station. Whenever you modify a file, the changes are backed up to DS1515+ automatically. Mac users also enjoy native Apple® Time Machine support. You can also back up data from your DS1515+ to another DiskStation, rsync servers, external drives, or even Amazon® S3, Glacier cloud service, Microsoft Azure, SFR, and hicloud. "Backup & Replication" allows you to schedule backup tasks and restore the server to any particular point in time, while minimizing storage consumption and processing time by saving only the specific data block that has been changed between versions.

Synology

Increase business productivity with cloud solutions

With comprehensive cloud solutions, DS1515+ lets you create your own private cloud easily. Cloud Station is the perfect package to sync files across multiple devices. Files can be edited in offline mode and later synced to Cloud Station, which keeps up to 32 historical versions, allowing you to restore a file back to previous version or recover deleted files. With the mobile app DS cloud, any change made to a file is automatically synced to your smartphones and tablets. For distributed enterprises, Synology's 2-way sync between different DiskStations ensures employees at different locations share the same information in real-time. IT administrators can handpick individual folders that they want to sync to different devices, manually or automatically based on file format and size. Folders synced by Cloud Station can be encrypted on DSM — no one will be able to access its content without your private key.

Synology

Secure your data

DS1515+ offers advanced security measures to protect you from potential security holes. Security Advisor analyzes system settings, password strength, network preferences and removes any possible malware. AppArmor blocks malicious programs from accessing unauthorized system resources. You can also customize the trust level in Package Center to avoid installing packages from untrusted sources, safeguarding your NAS from unknown or tampered files. In addition, DS1515+ provides other security add-ons, such as AES encryption, 2-Step verification, IP block & allow list, Antivirus packages, firewall, and DoS attack prevention.

4 out of 5 eggsA little too locked down for the linux users, but generally solid

Pros: It works. Pop the discs in, use the interface to configure the storage and watch 'er go! The web browser interface is fairly intuitive after only a short time playing around with it. There is also a good user support base on their forums. You may not find all the answers you want, but they will point you in the right direction. And this was all from reading previous posts. I didn't have to post anything to find what I was looking for.

Cons: If you search for "synolock" you will see that Synology had a major problem with their NAS's getting hacked. IMO this was largely due to people not protecting something exposed to the Internet. Nonetheless, Synology put a LOT of security into the new implementation of their management software. For those of us who are tech savvy with linux, this stuff really just gets in the way. It took me a long time to figure out how to map the shares on the NAS to my Debian and Mac computers. And even now, the permissions are not quite right. I'm sure this is fixable, I just need to spend a lot of time learning even more about linux to do this...kind of annoying.

Other Thoughts: It appears Synology really has fixed the synolock issue. But, word to the wise, do NOT put any computer system onto the Internet unless you have it very well protected. In linux land, this means setting up SSH to only use public-private keys and disabling password login...passwords are guessable, private keys are not.

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME!

Pros: The DSM interface!
Product quality
Noise level
Low heat

5 out of 5 eggsBest purchase I made this year! Period!

Pros: Small, powerful, full-featured, expandable, quiet, easy to use, fast. The software alone that powers it makes it worth every peny. Want to run a web server, mail server, your own media library (with Plex, DLNA, Media Server), Dev/Ops tools (Gitlab, Jenkins, mysql, docker), standard file shares. its all included out of the box. Built-in Antivirus, offsite cloud backup capability built in, link aggregation and fail-over for up to 4 ports; what more can you ask for?

Cons: None that I could find and I've had mine since March 2015.

Other Thoughts: For anyone who has a small business, or anyone who wants to have business like features without the big price tag or headache, this is a must buy. The fact that Synology is constantly upgrading the software and adding new features is very impressive. I was shocked when I logged in the first time and found one-button installs of Drupal, WordPress, Joomla, Java, SVN, Git, RADIUS, VPN, LDAP and ERP software to name a few. My configuration is:
- DS1515+ (2 Nics bonded)
- 4 x 4TB WD Red
- Netgear R7000 Nighthawk
- APC Back-UPS 550W
- WD 1 TB External drive connected via USB and shared.
Running Gitlab, Docker, MariaDb, Media Server, Antivirus, etc.

Notes: You want to remember to purchase the drives as it comes without them. I also recommend getting a network switch that supports Link Aggregation (Nic Teaming or the LACP feature in the Newegg search) to take advantage of the powerful network features that are included. An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) is a must as its saved my device plenty of times since I live in an area where they have frequent power fluctuations and outages due to weather and construction. I use a basic APC UPS connected to the SAN via USB and it manages itself and even emails me when outages occur. One feature I'm eager to try is the Solid State cache option and when I add a new server, using it for VMware and Hyper-V. its my own private cloud. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but definitely not perfect

Pros: Okay, it is simple. I love the bonding of ports for better throughput. Nice UI, which even my wife who isn't a Network / Storage person could use. She found an app for her iDevice that lets her upload pictures / video to the Photostation add-on. User level controls. Best of all: I haven't had to touch it since setup really.

Cons: Initial setup is slow. I mean excruciating, painfully slow, when you're setting up 5 - 4TB drives in SHR. The bonding is a bit goofy to setup. I left 1 of the 4 NICs with a separate hard set IP for device management, just to be safe, after an initial annoyance.

Other Thoughts: Definitely get the memory upgrade. You'll thank yourself, especially if you have multiple people using it.

5 out of 5 eggsTerrific NAS

Pros: This is a well thought out and solid NAS. This is an upgrade to my older Synology DS410 4 bay model, and it much faster and far more capable. Sync files and photos with your phone. Backup computers around your home/office. Share files with friends and family. Add optional software/apps from the package center. This thing can do prett much anything you want a NAS to do.

Cons: Expensive.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's Synology. It's easy to install, it's easy to setup

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I also own a previous version, the DS1511+. I started to run short of drive space, and decided to purchase another unit instead of just upgrading drives. The improvements over the previous version are noticeable. The better CPU and more RAM lets me get more performance than I was getting (which was already pretty good). 4 Gig NIC's over two is advantageous, as I needed at least 3 (one for iSCSI, one for DLNA service to the user VLAN since it can't be routed, and one for other services). The biggest sign of the upgrade to me was when I did the disk check after creating the RAID array. I have 5 4TB drives setup in a RAID6, and it took about 12 hours to do the checks. The same check on 5 2TB drives in the 1511 took 36 hours. I have been very happy with my 1511, and have no doubt that I'll be exceedingly happy with the 1515. The 1511 isn't going anywhere either, it's being repurposed to an iSCSI only unit so I can separate my VMware storage from the rest of my stuff.

5 out of 5 eggsWow

Pros: Everything and more that I could ask for! If you have the money, don't cut yourself short. Buy a Synology NAS, and you'll never turn back. It has the simplest setup, UI, and is the best NAS on the market!

Cons: Nothing.

4 out of 5 eggsSynology DS 1515+

Pros: Fast setup and simple setup. Update was fast and the 1515+ will beep after completion. About 15 minutes to get it up and running.

Installation of the applications are straight forward, video station does gathers metadata, rating, summary and poster art for movies added. You can play videos from the browser or access the files directly as a network share.

Plex Media Server seems a bit processor intensive on the device but it does work.

It can do link aggregation, bonding of 3 Ethernet ports at this time, so backups, file transfers, streaming/encoding on the fly is no problem with this unit.
Adding an external 2.5 usb 2.0 hard drive formatted NTFS automatically shared the device to the shared network.
The included tools/features/free apps, you can scrub the drives for any data inconsistencies, schedule quick or full S.M.A.R.T scans, security checks such as weak passwords, and virus scanning. You can also do folder level encryption which still maintains fast transfer speeds.

I was able to add a 4GBs ram stick easily, take off 5 screws and cover, just be sure to check you are using the correct specifications, total 6GBs of ram.

The user interface is easily accessible, very smooth and easy to use resembles a Linux desktop.

The build quality of the enclosure is a solid metal with some plastic. The drive caddies are made of plastic and metal latch that is lockable with a plastic key. Plastic retainers on the side snap off and on the hard drives for retention. The caddies also have rubber grommets to reduce vibration or to improve the fit of the hard drives.

Currently using 5x HSTG 4TB NAS which are on the DS1515+ compatibility list. No problems at this time. Configured with Hybrid RAID 1 disk failure for fault tolerance.

Accessing the web or share via Windows or OSX without any issues.

You can expand the unit with 2 or 5 bay expansion bay units from Synology.
2x eSATA ports for that feature or add external hard drives with the 4 USB 3.0 ports. Seamlessly works with NTFS formatted drives.

Cons: Expensive. If you want the most out of the unit, you will need to pay the extra cash for a more capable switch, cat 5 cables only 2 included. The drive caddies could be made of metal, the retaining clips feel solid but I don't know how long they will last due to being plastic. The biggest fear is breaking off a plastic notch off the clip.

The packaging was horrible, the box arrived completely open with the top smashed off and taped back together with clear shipping tape. It shipped in the original box from Synology with no additional protection.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this unit to consolidate all my external hard drives, encrypt personal files, stream music, videos, pictures. I intend to use the USB 3.0 ports for additional backups or removable drives for on the go always synced and up to date files.

I drop it 1 star because the retail shipping box fell apart. When you purchase a product you also pay for the package it comes in, and it falling apart prior to arrival is not acceptable especially for a $800+ unit.
