5 out of 5 eggsNice Unit!

Pros: Solidly built unit. Software is excellent (with one exception). Will take two external drives. I actually prefer the blog/picture storage software over that of MS Homeserver. Very low power consumption. Continuously updated software.

Cons: Download redirector software tends to drive my network nuts. I just deactivate that part of the package if I don't have to use it.

Other Thoughts: I really like these little servers. I own a 106 as well. For what a home user needs, these are excellent solutions. I don't know what to think about the redirector software. Perhaps it is a misconfiguration, but there are not a great number of items that could conflicting for the Redirector problem. Synology updates their software package so often that it may resolve the problem. Everything else works wonderfully on the unit.

Nice blue lights!! Mmmmmmmmmmm.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: Setup was very easy. Hard drive popped right in, loaded the setup software and I was up and running. Use it for a TimeMachine backup (with some finagling to get TM to see it) and I use it as an iTunes server.
Web UI is very easy to use and there are lots of features on this NAS that are easy to set up. Use it with Macs and PCs

Cons: Only holds a terabyte, I will probably fill that up in a little while.

Other Thoughts: Used a new Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM from NewEgg and it works great. Haven't done good speed tests on it. I set everything to jumbo frames and I get about 6MB/sec copying

4 out of 5 eggsEasy Set-up & install

Pros: Easy setup--the shell opens easily for drive installation. The software CD is needed to find the unit on the network and then you are able to login and set the IP address. What's good about the software is that after you do the initial setup-- the software disappears-- no bloatware/crapware installed on the PC. I appreciate that.
The rest administrative of the setup is standard for network storage unit-- Setup Groups and Users and Folders and you're off. The DS107+ has more memory-- but for a small home network-- this is sufficient.
The size also makes it amenable to placement in an unobtrusive place in your system.
Last-- the plethora of Functions-- Download, Broadcast, USB printer, iTunes, etc far outstrips the first generation Home NAS's (ie: my old Buffalo LinkStation)

Cons: I did not give it 5 stars because there is no Drive Maintenance function such as Repair or some kind of DriveScan.
And I would have liked the ability to create partitions if I were to put in a terabyte drive.

Other Thoughts: The Administrative interface is best viewed in Internet Explorer-- so Firefox users need to use IE Tab for full functionality and less frustration.

5 out of 5 eggsJust the machine!

Pros: If you own the 106e series, you will appreciate this nas. It is quiet, cool and fast. If all you need is a single bay just buy this. I have the dual bay, single bay and the 106e series. To be honest, I haven't notice any lag in any area with this 107 series. To be precise, it is a good NAS Server. Best of all it plays well with third party

Cons: So far so good.

3 out of 5 eggsNot as good as the DS 207

Pros: It works and works well. Loaded with features.

Cons: You can only put in 1 hard drive.
Why buy this for $220 when you can have the 2 hard drive DS207 model for $230?? You get the same features and redundancy!

Other Thoughts: I have used several of these at a client location. Synology makes an excellent product, support is great and the community forums are strong.

4 out of 5 eggsNot good 4 BitTorrent

Pros: This is a great affordable NAS for a home/office network. It does all it says it does but see cons.

Cons: I bought this unit so I could turn off my computer and let it download large torrents 24/7. Unfortunately the download rate compared to a client such as uTorrent is terrible. Typically 1:10 or more. I can start a torrent download on the NAS then start the same on my laptop and get 7k down on the NAS and 50+k down on uTorrent.
Other than that it works great.
