1 out of 5 eggsthe hammer is not worth the cost

Pros: Simple to setup and use as a backup drive.
Large capacity.
Flexible configurations.

Cons: Initially, I received a defective unit that would not allow for large data transfers to the drive in the preferred RAID 1 mode This was replaced by the manufacturer.

I've owned the drive for two years, an a month ago I turne it on after 5 months of disuse. The configuration page (web browser-based configuration) faile with an uninformative "XML error" message. When I asked the manufacturer how I could fix the out-of-warranty device, I was told that it was out of warranty and the problem could not be fixed. I figure two years is an unacceptably short lifespan for an external drive that was powered down while not being used.

Other Thoughts: The configuration pages are web based, so when they fail, you can't change the RAID settngs even if the drive is still accessible.

I will not buy another.

5 out of 5 eggsGood choice

Pros: Quick setup, small size, low noise and reasonably fast. I wanted a reliable data storage option at home that was readily accessible to both my computers. RAID 1 setup took less than 3 hours. Gives 458 GB space after that.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have tried this only in a Workgroup network - don't know how well it supports Active Directory. If you want mirroring, set it up first before you do anything else.

1 out of 5 eggsWorthless

Pros: Easy Setup, quiet, doesn't take up very much desk space.

Cons: No customer service or support, I tried to call the phone techs three time during the sated business hours and got an answering machine and still haven't gotten a reply on the e-mail i have sent, the downloads page for firmware is out of date the online documentation is out of date too.

Other Thoughts: If you don't think you will ever need tech support then this product is pretty good but remember that the help docs it comes with are out of date too.

3 out of 5 eggsFair at best

Pros: Easy if using in Windows environment.

Cons: Bought to use with Oracle databases. Don't expect most of NFS mount options (Linux) to work. Still trying to figure out how to chown to oracle:dba but nothing but errors and Oracle is very picky about ownership and file privs. Don't recommend for Oracle databases. Performance only fair even with gig card.

Other Thoughts: If for simple Windows use would recommend. For Linux or any other Unix would look at other products.

2 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

Pros: Easy to get running (configuration non-aside), inexpensive

Cons: Simply not made for a windows network

Other Thoughts: I purchased this for my work to get our 500GB of corporate shared data off of a Windows 2k3 server box and onto something "simpler" to maintain.

I made the purchase based on the great reviews this thing got. Unfortunately, I didn't read the reviews that said Active Directory support was NOT working.

I've tried contacting Hammer regarding the issue. After hours of ridiculous email back and forth trying to get them to understand my issue with the unit (serious language barrier), they still won't acknowledge or offer a fix for the problem. In fact, they will no longer return my emails, despite the fact that I've remained cool, calm and collective (and very respectful) during this entire adventure.

Basically, you can create a share that will show up on your Windows network, but you CANNOT assign any permissions to a folder through Windows. You have to use their rinky-dink web interface to create an account. Even though creating duplicate accounts and requiring users to have

1 out of 5 eggsTrouble if you can't risk losing your data

Pros: Easy to use; moderately quick speeds over gigabit; quiet

Cons: NFS Sharing doesn't work; HAMMER cannot save your data if you need to send it in for repair (e.g. kiss your data goodbye);

Other Thoughts: I purchased a 1 TB Hammer MyShare NAS from NewEgg *almost* a year ago and for some reason, the unit refuses to power on as of last night. After talking with Hammer's techsupport, if I send it in for warranty service.. all they will do is replace the unit and I lose my data. There is no way around this.

Tech support also said that I could "take the drives to someone who knows how to retrieve RAID1 data" but that would void my warranty (and kiss $450+ goodbye). They also wouldn't say how to extract the mirrored data.

So you tell me. Do you want to buy a NAS unit from a company that can't rescue your data? Do you want to risk your data?

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Easy setup, low power consumption and network storage for the hole house.

Cons: Incredibly unreliable long term. NFS doesn't work.

Other Thoughts: I gave this unit a good review shortly after I purchased it, however it has been well over a year now and both of the internal drives have failed, both of them within the last month. I would suspect the problem to be unit itself, most likely because the drives never seem to spin down (as far as I have been able to tell). When the first drive failed I lost roughly a quarter terabyte of applications and recorded tv shows, when the second drive failed, I had just over 100 gigabites on the unit. I'm going to switch to a more reliable storage/backup solution (hint, it starts with a 'D', ends with a an 'o').

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Network Drive

Pros: Sometimes NO COMPUTER is a better idea. I set this up in Mirror RAID mode, so I won't ever lose my network data. It was very easy to set up, and is very easy to maintain. Data is easy to access throughout my network, but safe with password protection.

Cons: none
