2 out of 5 eggsduds

Pros: Fast

Cons: Ordered 2 initially. 1 was DOA. I mean DEAD. Got it replaced and ordered a 3rd one. One of those has now failed, less than 8 mos later. All of them noisy.

Other Thoughts: Get a Seagate, or a WD if you can find em.

5 out of 5 eggsGreased Lightning

Pros: Fast, quiet, relatively cool, and a tinkerers' delight.

Cons: For what it is, in its class, none.

Other Thoughts: I've used Raptors exclusively for boot drives for about 6 years. I like to play, so I paired this drive with a 3Ware host adapter (with breakout cables for 4 drives). Other than the possibility of a longer time before failure, I can not justify SAS even for the most demanding workstations. For enterprise server applications, OK. These drives are truly excellent but--and again, I like to play--not worth the total (real) cost of implementation for most of us.

5 out of 5 eggsReasonable priced SAS drive

Pros: We needed a basic SAS drive for a 1U server - this seemed like a good choice. We've been happy with the reliability and performance of the drive.

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: Good mix of price and space.

4 out of 5 eggsBelow: Check your power cables

Pros: Second one (rma) is excellent. Fast, relatively quiet--very crisp.

Cons: Limited motherboard support.

Other Thoughts: 3 drives in a row can not be dead. Troubleshoot your 12vdc+- and 5vdc +-. It's either your cables or the PSU, not the drives.

3 out of 5 eggsJust don't know

Pros: High speed equals fast access etc. I assume it really is 15k RPM.

Cons: I do not like the combo cables. Power and signal cables should be separate for many good reasons. The drive sounded like a sewing machine and and a dying moose on first boot. After 2 months it caused instability and later died. I RMAed through Jujitsu and they handled it promptly and very efficiently. I am very satisfied with that part.

Other Thoughts: I don't know, but I suspect the Raptors are as good or better.

5 out of 5 eggsIdeal RAID 5 Setup

Pros: Fast and reliable. Designed to be powered on and left on. Not a minutes trouble with eight of these dirves in operation in the past year! This is serious high-end stuff - both the hardware and the knowledge to use it.

Cons: Cost. Also, technical difficulty in implementing SAS drives with a SATA mindset.

Other Thoughts: I have eight of these drives in a RAID 5 configuration on a LSI MegaRaid 8408E hardware RAID controller. The LSI controller occupies a PCIe x8 slot on my Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS4P MB. Using ATTO to get some benchies I have sustained reads of 700MB/sec. Sustained writes are 550MB/sec. Writes suffer because of the RAID 5 parity bit being written. Booting takes a while because the RAID controller needs to be read. I've not had a bit of trouble with POST or any BIOS or driver issues. Windows Vista x64 literally jumps onto the screen. Nothing seems to give this system trouble. As the saying goes, "if you can afford it, I highly recommend it".

5 out of 5 eggsThese are AWESOME

Pros: Got them in RAID0 running on the SAS controller on board my x58 ASUS deluxe motherboard. MAN ARE THESE THINGS FAST!!! Load times remind me of the cartridge days. These things are FAST!!! I can't stress how fast they are, really!

Cons: They are kind of noisy.
