The RND4250 from Netgear is a 4-bay network storage enclosure that will grow as your needs do. The 4 hot swappable bays support SATA and SATA II hard drives. Two 500GB drives are already installed and configured so you're ready to go right out of the box. Add capacity beyond the hard drives with the 3 USB 2.0 ports, or attach a printer and let the print server handle your network's print jobs. There is a 256MB memory module to speed up operations. There are indicator LEDs and a 2 line LCD display to let you monitor status.
There is built in support for RAID levels 0, 1 and 5. Or you can take advantage of the patent pending X-RAID technology to future-proof your system. It lets you add drives as necessary and swap out smaller drives for larger as your needs increase. X-RAID will handle it all automatically; no more buying a second enclosure full of drives and transferring all of the data manually.
The ReadyNAS NV+ is also a fully featured media server with UPnP AV and SlimServer support. It's also Windows MCE compatible so all of your PCs on the network can access the media files from a central location. HTTP/S and FTP/S support lets you access the device from anywhere you have internet access.

Infrant?? rocks
- Pros: So I guess that Infrant got bought out by Netgear but it's the same product so I will go ahead and review it. I just bought this without the hard drives. I chose a single Hitachi 1TB drive for the initial storage option. **note** This HD is not on the compatability list and I knew this before I purchased it. I just wanted to see if it worked or not. That being said, it does work but the container is limited to 666MB with this drive for some reason. Mayber Hitachi would like to explain. I can't knock Infrant/Netgear down for that because I knew it wasn't on the HCL before purchase. Other than that this NAS works extremely well for a home/SOHO NAS. I purchased the model w/ 256 MB memory. If you have basic understanding of RAID/media streaming/network tech you will have this drive configured in very little time. I had my NAS configured within 30 min and it took an additional 30 or so to format the 666MB container using XRaid. Using standard RAID options will take longer.
- Cons: None on my Infrant NAS. That big Fugly NETGEAR symbol on the new model seems to really ruing the simplicicty of the design. Glad I got mine before the buyout.
- Other Thoughts: Performance on this NAS rocks compared to my precious NAS, Buffalo Terastation. That thing didn't support jumbo frames nor was it SATA. It also couldn't keep a connection long enough to transfer a single 700MB file. I transfered my entire 500GB collection of movies over to my ReadyNAS in just under 5 hours using Jumbo Frames. The connection never dropped even when XP paused to verify the file write. I also am very fond of the built in media streaming support. I can watch all of my electronic media from my networked dvd player on a wireless connection to my readyNAS without having to turn on my computer and with the skip free performance as my core2 e6600 machine.
Very slow NAS, irksome security, missing features
- Pros: Small footprint, easy to set up, good user interface, hot swap
- Cons: <b>Performance:</b> The reviewers raved about this NAS. So I took it as an article of faith that it would perform superbly. After all, it's a dedicated NAS with 4 fast drives and a GigE connection. It should easily be able to deliver 50-60 MB/s reads and 40-50 MB/s writes. I should have checked the forums before buying. This NAS only does 20MB/s writes and 32MB/s reads in a fully loaded, performance tweaked configuration (4 drives configured with X-RAID, 1024MB memory, cached writes, no journaling). If you have a little know-how, you can build your own for the same money with double the performance.
<b>Security:</b> Even with security set as open as possible, mixing CIFS (aka SMB) and NFS services on the same share resulted in permission and ownership conflicts
<b>Missing Features</b> ssh download redirection bitTorrent
- Other Thoughts: A poor value for the money. I sent mine back for a refund.
-
Manufacturer Response:The read/write preformance described for an embedded system is accpetable and expected. Regarding security, it is very difficult to mix CIFS and NFS without conflicts. Regarding embedded Bit Torrent and Secure Shell, these features were added with our firmware release in Jan 2008. Thanks, NETGEAR ReadyNAS Team Support Forum at www.readynas.com/forum/

Upgrading the 4250
- Pros: Reasonably priced for initial entry. $525 with 2-500GB drives. Replaced 2-500GB drives with 4-Black Caviar 1TB drives at initial setup in May '09. Upgraded to 4-Hitachi 2TB drives. Process took 48 hours. 9 hours per drive, two reboots and included an upgrade of the firmware. No data lost, system usable during update. NTI shadow software performs continuous backups of all computers in the office plus a Buffalo 1TB NAS system.
- Cons: Long process to update system. Documentation to expand system is hard to find. System does not send email alerts as software indicates. Raid-x configures to smallest drive in the box. Excess space can be utilized in a non-Raidx configuration.
- Other Thoughts: Drobo's solution is cleaner and faster, utilizes all space regardless of drive size. Drawback is that it only connects to one computer (USB or Firewire), unless you also invest in the separately purchased DroboShare box.
Didn't work with our network
- Pros: Easy setup, small form factor
- Cons: Slow processor, didn't work with our network setup in the office. works more like an external hard drive with built-in RAID.
- Other Thoughts: We were looking for a low cost solution for our data storage, and backup. However, accessing the files to use proved limited. We ended up getting a new computer to act as our file server. Watch that restocking fee. Do your research first and decide before you buy.
Great Music Server
- Pros: Compatible with Sonos music. Can easily hold 4 disks of 1 Tb each in RAID5 (raid x is their proprietary name). After sending a D-Link RAID package back to Newegg and buying this; I never had second thoughts. Firmware upgrades are easy and Windows XP always recognizes the NAS drives.
- Cons: None so far. Netgear buying Infrant made me a little anxious but this product seems as good as the Infrant that came before.
- Other Thoughts: Drive bays in the netgear actually open easier than in the Infrant but otherwise both are nearly identical. When you can afford four enterprise model WD 1TB 7200 rpm drives in here in X-RAID (raid 5); the product really shines.
