The RND4425 from Netgear is a 4-bay network storage enclosure that will grow as your needs do. The 4 hot swappable bays support SATA and SATA II hard drives. Four 250GB drives are already installed and configured so you're ready to go right out of the box. Add capacity with the 3 USB 2.0 ports, or attach a printer and let the print server handle your network's print jobs. A 256MB memory module speeds up operations. Indicator LEDs and a 2 line LCD display let you monitor status.

There is built in support for RAID levels 0, 1 and 5. Take advantage of the X-RAID technology to future-proof your system. Add drives as needed and swap out smaller drives for larger as your needs increase. X-RAID will handle it all automatically; no more buying a second enclosure full of drives and transferring all of the data manually.

The ReadyNAS NV+ is also a fully featured media server with UPnP AV and SlimServer support. It's also Windows MCE compatible so all of your PCs on the network can access the media files from a central location. HTTP/S and FTP/S support lets you access the device from anywhere you have internet access.

2 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed

Pros: Easy set up
Browser-based administration
Multiple RAID levels
Newegg's service

Cons: Performance was abysmal. I purchased the NAS to replace a home-grown file server. However, after trying the various options -- firmware upgrades/downgrades, different protocols, reinstalling the system twice, verifying the performance with IOMeter, and so on -- I couldn't get it past 8 MB/s reads and 1.5 MB/s writes. My existing stock file server runs stock Samba with five shares, all told less than 100 GB. But via IOMeter it gets 40 MB/s reads and 25 MB/s writes.

Unfortunately I'm by no means alone. Just look up the problems in Netgear's forum :(

Other Thoughts: I really, really wanted this to work. And I'm somewhat confident that it's possible to get similar speeds (though those who've quoted read/write speeds are still lower than what I get on my file server). I don't, however, want to mess with it. That's the point of getting an out-of-the-box solution - plug and play. If I'm going to be diagnosing hardware/firmware issues, I can do that with a cheaper solution :(

Also: note that the default administrator password changed from "infrant1" to "netgear1" with the 4.00c1-p2 firmware, though this wasn't mentioned anywhere.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't be fooled

Pros: Extremely fast. If someone says it's slow they are doing something wrong. 33mb/s write speed and 39mb/s read over the network. Extremely easy to setup and admin. It has a ton of extra feature most won't use but will be glad are available. The best thing of all? Hardware Raid. Unlike most NAS units this is hardware vs. software RAID, which is what makes it so fast.

Cons: The backup software is difficult to setup unless, you know someone from EMC.

Other Thoughts: While the EMC software isn't that great, I was using Acronis and it works flawlessly with this product.

3 out of 5 eggsNOT fast

Pros: Very impressive to just yank out a drive and see it all continue to work. Timed backups are terrific. Forum support actually gets you to tier three engineers. Emails you when there are problems. Best for backup of primary drives, not AS primary drives.

Cons: Simple first test: Copy from PC to external USB drive. Then copy from PC to NAS. The winner is: USB! By a lot. Yes, this is WITH gigabit NICs and jumbo frames. Read their forums and you'll see lots about performance; not as advertised. Click on a share with thousands of files and get ready for Window's famous "scanning flashlight." Very disappointing after a recommendation by Leo Laporte.

Other Thoughts: Setup by countless GUI screens does not allow a backup of the config for restoration on a replacement unit. I'd budget in a 5th drive; just pull one when you get it and order (from NewEgg of course) an identical drive. Does not work with WD 320GB external USB. Next time will build my own RAID 5 box. NetGear MAY give you 3 year warranty depending on where you by this. They're not clear on this during Infrant->NetGear transition.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Hardware - Blah Support

Pros: It fast and the web interface is easy to use. The display on the front is handier than I thought it would be.

Cons: System claimed a drive failed after a week of use. It now looks like it was some kind of system hiccup and not a drive failure. Has worked fine since then.

Netgear's tech support were nice guys, but they have very little technical knowledge of the product, since they have only recently bought the company.

Even worse, Netgear has NO replacement drives in stock, so if one fails you are on your own to replace it.

Other Thoughts: I'd give the hardware a 5 and the support a 2.

I may end up buying another one for work despite how annoyed I am at Netgear.
