2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Affordable, reasonable response time from service during warranty period.

Cons: A little slow but I didn't buy the "current model" at the time.

2 disks failed within warranty and were replaced with refurbished drives. One of those failed and was replaced with yet another that was 5400 rather than 7200RPM (eg not to original spec) which also failed.

Other Thoughts: Comment I left on NetGear's site:
Well, as I feared the second replacement drive has failed after only 5 months, just about a month after warranty expired. The first had failed within a month or replacement.

I will never be able to recommend NetGear products because the warranty service is so poor.

Sending out equipment as replacement that was previously defective just seems like a bad decision to me and, IIRC, has been used as an example as a "cost saving measure" in an article that went on to explain that it was a sign that a company was on the way out.

I have no idea in NetGear's case whether that will be true, but you will get no more money (or time) from me.

I will be posting this on the NewEgg review site as well.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage, but reliable

Pros: Reliable storage of data. Easy to setup.

Cons: Transfer speeds are complete garbage. GbE connection, 4x 2TB Western Digital drives in Netgear's X-RAID setup. Transfers from the only computer accessing the device average 6 MB/s writes and 8 MB/s reads. Speeds can go much slower at that.

Each 2 TB HDD in this unit benchmarks around 90 MB/s write and 100+ MB/s read. Write speeds typically on any server software RAID would run (90 * 4)*(.7) = 250 MB/s. GbE should be the chief bottleneck, getting speeds down to 100 MB/s including networking overhead. I get 80-100 MB/s transferring files from one PC to the next.

ReadyNAS NV+ shows that it is connected at 1000 mbit. Per NetGear this is supposed to remedy any transfer problems, as they claim slow speeds are caused by 100 BaseT connections. Funny I swapped in a 100 MbE switch and got the exact same speeds when testing.

Other Thoughts: Only use this device if you are using it for overnight or similar backups. Do not use this device for media or filesharing whether in a home or small office.

2 out of 5 eggsProblems after a year

Pros: Nice unit for the first year.

Cons: #1. After a year Drive 1 needed to be replaced, 4 months later Drive 2 says it needs to be replaced. Hard to beleave Seagates drive are failing.
Tech help is in India.

#2. Firmware update caused problems, Tech Support had me reload the original Firmware. Everything went back to normal.

#3. Now a year and a half after purchase the unit is locking up and can not access folders. Will not power down when the button is pressed and held, have to pysically pull the power cord to reboot the NAS.

#4. Now Netgear support wants $250 to extend the warranty on the NAS. The unit had a 1 year warranty and of course the problems start after that.

I am not going to spend $250 to extend the warranty on a unit that has problems. Would rather put the money towards a new NON NetGear unit!

Other Thoughts: My first and last NetGear NAS purchase.
NetGear needs better customer service!

I like the unit I only wish there were not so many problems with it.

4 out of 5 eggsExactly what I was looking for

Pros: It does exactly what i was looking for; secure safe storage for my family's data. I get warnings via e-mail when a drive is about to fail (and/or any other important event), it streams media fantastically, and has been a solid partner for 2 years now.

Cons: Doesn't have all the wiz-bang features of a Windows Home Server. Only purpose-built apps work with it, but that is kind of the point.

4 out of 5 eggsDevice is Great

Pros: The device works great. I originally bought it with the 4x 1Tb drives and 2 weeks later installed 4x 2Tb drives and the expansion went off without a hitch.

Cons: I've had nothing but trouble trying to obtain the rebate after submitting the requested material.

Other Thoughts: Based on the lack of help from Newegg with trying to help me get the rebate I would recommend buying from a different vendor.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid, love it

Pros: As stable as all-git-out. Had this since '07, and couldn't be happier. Using default X-RAID config, works great. Gigabit wired ethernet just screams. Seamless integration with an APC RS800 UPS keeps it safe during power failures. Auto backup & USB print server a big plus.

Cons: Occasionally had a problem with shares locking up when a wirelessly-connected workstation would drop signal in the middle of a write operation... NV+ had to be rebooted to access anything. Once I pinpointed the bad wireless adapter, nary a hitch to be seen. Only other thing is that transferring large amounts of data between shares on the NAS is slower than I'd like, but not that big a deal.

Other Thoughts: Replaced 2 different NAS's (Buffalo & Maxtor) which utterly failed within a year. No data recovery possible on either. So, years of work files down the tubes (one was backing up the other, so our failsafe FAILED.) After weeks of painstaking data recreation from old systems, CDs and floppies (some 5.25"!!) everything was dumped on the NV+ and we haven't had a problem since. Our NV+ is still using the original disks (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10's I think), and no issues at all.

Not using internet services or iTunes server functions so I can't speak to the functionality of those, but for an easy to manage, solid file storage solution, this has been perfect.

1 out of 5 eggsBad disks

Pros: It's small in size.

Cons: 2 disks have died so far. Recently plugged into a GigE switch. The device doesn't do GigE. Can't do more than one file operation at one time otherwise it slows way down.

Other Thoughts: Purchased for $2,369.99 back in 10/2008.

5 out of 5 eggsLove ReadyNAS NV+ in Mac/PC Environment

Pros: Reliable NAS. Additional services such as iTunes Streaming Server and ReadyNAS Remote. Setting up ReadyNAS remote was a breeze while I have never been able to do the same on my predominantly Apple network with the Apple Timeshare. Easy daily backup to an attached USB drive.

Despite some comments on this site about problems on a Mac network, I have updated to the latest software and have no problems in a mixed PC/Apple environment.

Cons: It takes some reading to be able to set up and use the more advance functions, however there are tons of user guides provided by Netgear and third parties on the ReadyNas site.

Other Thoughts: I love this system and do not understand why Drobo or other systems are getting better press. Their functionality pales compared the ReadyNAS.

I have been running the ReadyNAS for a couple of years with no problems. It sent me an email alerting me of some potential drive errors suggesting I consider replacing one of the drives. This brought me back to NewEgg where I saw a few negative comments.

4 out of 5 eggsFinally more space

Pros: Very simple to set up. Use with both Mac and PC. I finally have a file server that can handle the "backup" needs of several computers. I definitely like being able to schedule on/off to save power at nights. I definitely recommend this product.

Cons: As mentioned in the ReadyNAS forums, I did have some issues with the Macs too, but was able to work around them.

5 out of 5 eggsOK by me

Pros: I got this set up and slinging files around my office in about 15 minutes. We run Windows XP thru 7 as well as a couple macs and one dying linux box. Everything connects right up.

Cons: I didn't buy it from newegg.

Other Thoughts: I'm not sure how well the Xraid will work in the event of a drive failure, buy I'm a backup junkie and keep multiple on and off site backups of everything anyway.
