A 500GB drive is already installed and configured so you're ready to go right out of the box. Add capacity beyond the hard drives with the 3 USB 2.0 ports, or you attach a printer and let the print server handle your network's print jobs. There is a 256MB memory module to speed up operations.

This enclosure uses the patent pending X-RAID technology to future-proof your system. Add drives as necessary and swap out smaller drives for larger as your needs increase. Great for personal or small office

white Reviewed By: EspressoMiata on 6/3/2008

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Great capabilities in a small package. Netgear has pretty much thought of everything in this little NAS. Media storage & streaming, file sharing, privacy, etc., this can do anything a small office would need and also a home computing enthusiast would want. Setup is basic enough for the average user yet has more sophisticated options for the more advanced user.
Cons: Does not integrate with Active Directory. Suggest using only for small number of users (less than 10). Having to setup users locally on the NAS is time consuming and would be very inconvenient for a large number. Sync'ing data when adding second disk for mirroring takes a long time even if there's no data on the original disk.
Other Thoughts: I purchased and implemented this for a small business client and now considering one for myself at home!

Great Nas But Confusing Permissions

white Reviewed By: Th3MadScientist on 6/29/2008

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Hot-swappable raid configuration, easy to manage interface. Supports Bittorrent as well as a few other protocols. Raidar utility is very informative. Had it up an running in about 10 minutes. Rebuilds/Syncs Raid 1 automatically but takes along time, about 1 1/2 hours for 2 500GB drives.
Cons: Does not support differential backups. Setting permissions on this thing is a nightmare, it's very confusing and all you'll end up doing is locking yourself out.
Other Thoughts: To the guy below me, you make other IT people look bad with your impulsive buying decisions and then giving bad reviews of the product because it won't do what you want it to do. Any respected IT official would of done the research first and found these issues and would've not wasted time. Please don't give products bad reviews just because you buy it first and then ask questions later. You should give yourself one egg for not being that smart.

Outstanding!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Extensive feature set, yet easy to set up and use. Web configuration interface is extremely well designed and thought out. I have this little beast streaming iTunes to three computer as well as a SONOS music system, as a video, picture, and torrent server. Easy to plug in a USB drive and either copy the files over for back up bi-directionally. I am consistently impressed with what a well designed and well built product this is. Upgrading to twin Samsung F3 1 TB spinpoints was easy as pie, and I took the drive it came with and stuck that in my desktop.
Cons: Noisey and bright. This was sitting on a desk in my bedroom for a while when I was configuring it and even when idle it is audible. It might be possible to swap out the fan for a quieter model but it is smaller than an 80mm. Also, the blue led in the power switch is galactically bright, particularly directly in front of it. I have moved the NAS down onto my rack of network gear in the basement so neither of these are issues for me any more, but both issues mean you should think twice before planting this in the open next to your HTPC setup.

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Extremely easy to use, supports everything I needed in a mixed Linux/Windows office. Easy to setup, easy to keep running, almost no need to touch it from month to month.
Cons: Rear USB ports not labeled, but in the software are called left and right, but is that front the front or back?
Other Thoughts: Could use a couple more USB ports, Printer, UPS, and back-up drive all connected at once, leaves no USB open.

Watch out for bad power supply

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Nice interface, easy to setup and lots of options.
Cons: There's a bad batch of power supplies. NewEgg won't replace just the power supply and NetGear won't ship you one either without charging you. NetGear support will make you ship entire unit back to NewEgg only to get a new unit with bad power supply or charge you to get working power supply.
