The RND2150 from from Netgear is a 2-bay network storage enclosure that will grow as your needs do. The 2 hot swappable bays support SATA and SATA II hard drives. A 500GB drive is already installed and configured so you're ready to go right out of the box. Add capacity beyond the hard drives with the 3 USB 2.0 ports, or you attach a printer and let the print server handle your network's print jobs. There is a 256MB memory module to speed up operations.
This enclosure uses the patent pending X-RAID technology to future-proof your system. Add drives as necessary and swap out smaller drives for larger as your needs increase. X-RAID will handle it all automatically; no more buying a second enclosure full of drives and transferring all of the data manually.
The ReadyNAS is also a fully featured media server with UPnP AV support.

Great for personal or small office
- Pros: Great capabilities in a small package. Netgear has pretty much thought of everything in this little NAS. Media storage & streaming, file sharing, privacy, etc., this can do anything a small office would need and also a home computing enthusiast would want. Setup is basic enough for the average user yet has more sophisticated options for the more advanced user.
- Cons: Does not integrate with Active Directory. Suggest using only for small number of users (less than 10). Having to setup users locally on the NAS is time consuming and would be very inconvenient for a large number. Sync'ing data when adding second disk for mirroring takes a long time even if there's no data on the original disk.
- Other Thoughts: I purchased and implemented this for a small business client and now considering one for myself at home!
Excellent NAS for Macs
- Pros: Fast, X-Raid technology built in, solid build quality, very good software (including mac os x widget), infrant/netgear clearly made macs more than an afterthought
- Cons: Sickeningly bright power led (had to cover it up...), no option for JBOD or Raid 0 (though not really a problem for me)
- Other Thoughts: Excellent little unit - I've got it in the bedroom and it's quiet enough when I'm trying to sleep (once you block out the power led). Handles AFP very well - instantly found over bonjour, good software, very good performance, reasonable price.

Outstanding!
- Pros: Extensive feature set, yet easy to set up and use. Web configuration interface is extremely well designed and thought out. I have this little beast streaming iTunes to three computer as well as a SONOS music system, as a video, picture, and torrent server. Easy to plug in a USB drive and either copy the files over for back up bi-directionally. I am consistently impressed with what a well designed and well built product this is. Upgrading to twin Samsung F3 1 TB spinpoints was easy as pie, and I took the drive it came with and stuck that in my desktop.
- Cons: Noisey and bright. This was sitting on a desk in my bedroom for a while when I was configuring it and even when idle it is audible. It might be possible to swap out the fan for a quieter model but it is smaller than an 80mm. Also, the blue led in the power switch is galactically bright, particularly directly in front of it. I have moved the NAS down onto my rack of network gear in the basement so neither of these are issues for me any more, but both issues mean you should think twice before planting this in the open next to your HTPC setup.
Works great.
- Pros: Extremely easy to use, supports everything I needed in a mixed Linux/Windows office. Easy to setup, easy to keep running, almost no need to touch it from month to month.
- Cons: Rear USB ports not labeled, but in the software are called left and right, but is that front the front or back?
- Other Thoughts: Could use a couple more USB ports, Printer, UPS, and back-up drive all connected at once, leaves no USB open.
Watch out for bad power supply
- Pros: Nice interface, easy to setup and lots of options.
- Cons: There's a bad batch of power supplies. NewEgg won't replace just the power supply and NetGear won't ship you one either without charging you. NetGear support will make you ship entire unit back to NewEgg only to get a new unit with bad power supply or charge you to get working power supply.
