3 out of 5 eggsWorks for me

Pros: Works. I hope if I have a drive failure I have data, and not two unreadable drives. I worry casue the support sucks.

Cons: Support sucks bad. Solve any problems in the first 90 days or pay for the support.

Other Thoughts: They don't seem to support the NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsMuch better now

Pros: - Inexpensive (current price for 1TB unit is no more than most 1TB drives today)
- Cost effective RAID capability for home users
- Seamless remote access to your personal home/cloud storage
- Can configure disks as RAID or JBOD
- New MySync capability to synchronize files from your computer/laptop from anywhere you have an internet connection

Cons: - Support - do not call Netgear for support, use under the Stora forum. Unfortunately the standard Netgear support is not sufficiently knowledgable about this product and will routinely give bad/incorrect information, attempt to charge you money, and are not very competent. Axentra, who develops the firmware provides support on the forum site and goes out of their way to support the users.

Other Thoughts: I purchased my Stora about a year and a half ago. For the first 6 months there were monthly firmware patches/upgrades and the units did have problems. Also, there was the "undocumented" $20 annual fee for Premium Subscription to provide all of the capabilities advertised.

Since then, the firmware has become significantly more stable. The capability is now there to use the disks in either RAID or JBOD mode, torrent support has been added. Lastly, just this week the $20 annual fee for the Premium Subscription has been eliminated and it is just a one-time $9.99 for life (current subscribers were extended for free).

With all of the features in the "Premium Pack" (new name for the subscription), along with the fixes over the past year, the Stora is now an extremely competitive product in this category.

With the current runup in disk prices due to world events, you can now purchase the 1TB Stora for only a few dollars more than the price of the disk alone.

4 out of 5 eggsPerformed above expectations!

Pros: Since completing setup, it's been 100% reliable
JBOD configuration possible after firmware updates
Reliable DLNA streaming

Cons: Setup was clunky. Software update funtion needed to be run repeatedly before all updates were applied.
Some files display in the wrong directory over DLNA.
I wouldn't recommend this device to someone of a low technical level.

Other Thoughts: I bought this with the sole intention of streaming video and music to my PS3 and have ended up doing a great deal more with it - namely, streaming music to my android phone and through my browser at work.

I'm sure there are higher-end solutions that are capable of more, but for this unit's price tag it's pretty amazing. For new users I can't stress enough that you should make sure your unit's firmware is completely up to date before proceeding, and that the update process will need to run several times before it is complete.

4 out of 5 eggsinteresting nas

Pros: -It accepts 2TB disks!!!
-The USB can be used to attach other drives
-It runs a small linux (stable)
-Gigabit runs fast
-Silent and power efficient
-Nice web interface

Cons: - UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE (many times untill there are no more updates), not a con just something to do.
- copying file inside windows network doesnt work after t
oo many files, FTP is flawless and super reliable (use that!)

Other Thoughts: Got it at a usually overpriced shop for 150$ (how is it possible?! cheaper than newegg? maybe they wrote the tag wrong).
I really love it. 2 disks 2tb in automatic raid1, many features like torrent client or sharing online (I'd never do that but they are there)

1 out of 5 eggsterrible

Pros: network attached storage is a good concept. Netgear failed miserably with this.

Cons: I have called netgear, subscribed to their premium service, have been denied the premium subscription provided by gearhead subscription. within one year the disk drive has now failed and netgear states that it is not their responsibility.

Other Thoughts: I trust that this will be posted. The time invested in this is not worth the hassle. netgear lost a customer, permanently. I will be posting my case file log documenting this review. new egg is welcome to contact me regarding this review

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: Simple NAS used for backup of three computers (including a mac). Time machine can be a bit tricky, but once working its fine. The box states that this box can use ANY hard drive and it seems that might be true. Used a seagate 1 tb drive as second for mirror and works great. Can hot swap drives, write speeds on gigabit lan are about 22Mb's per second. This is almost twice the speed of the MyBook Essential World II. At this time the product can be found cheaper elsewhere, but we all know newegg is great. If files are converted properly, can stream hd content to xbox or ps3 just fine.

Cons: Im not finding the whole web browser system to be that great, but windows does recognize it as a network item and can be accessed that way.

Other Thoughts: dont think twice if your looking for a cheap solution to mirrored backups and a cheap streaming solution.

1 out of 5 eggsSupport only good for 3 MONTHS!

Pros: Worked great

Cons: UNTIL I pressed the reset button....normally you would think pressing the reset button would be fine, erase the settings, start over. Not in this case. IF you press the reset button, Netgear REQUIRES you to "renew your product key" before you can set it up again. The message claims you can call support to do this, but not if you had it more than 90 days. They actually tried to make me PAY ($40) to have my own product key "renewed"! I already bought it, why do I have to pay to "renew" it. Unbelievable!

Other Thoughts: Now I have an expensive 6-month old brick box sitting on my floor next to my router with my unaccessible backups. I plan on writing a letter to consumer reports after this. There was no disclaimer saying I would have to pay to be able to reset my device.

1 out of 5 eggsStops working after one week

Pros: Nice design -- easy access to drives

Cons: Doesn't allow all features to work with XP, unpredictable (mine would periodically shut off... and sometimes not back on again!) Hassle to set up

Other Thoughts: This drive was not straight forward to set up. Furthurmore, it kept shutting off and I would not be able to turn it back on. I tried a different outlet several times. I wanted to buy it even though I saw the ratings were not so great because the Best Buy that I was at only had this for NAS's and I didn't want to wait. I learned my lesson. I am returning it this weekend.

5 out of 5 eggs2+ Years Flawless performance

Pros: High availability, reliability and stability for a COTS (Commercial off the shelf) home or small business data-backup solution. The price vs performance is well beyond exceptional compared to other NAS solutions. I replaced BOTH HDs w/ WD10EADS-00L5B1 1TB drives and have had a flawless experience running this NAS in RAID 1 (for high fault tolerance). Both HDs are running the latest firmware versions from WD. While I have supported countless 'Enterprise level' NAS solutions (costing $3K+) this Netgear Nas has never failed to provide rock-solid performance.

Cons: None come to mind after 2+ years utilizing this NAS platform

Other Thoughts: As a 16-year IT professional (w/ a background in engineering and architecture) I would highly recommend this NAS for a home networking and back-up solution. I personally would highly recommend this NAS solution (with the correct HDs installed) for ANY home-user or small business seeking high data availability and performance.

3 out of 5 eggsGood low end DLNA server

Pros: This is a barebones server to expect anymore would be fooling yourself. Great for the home. If your looking for a low cost device to put your photos, video and movie collections on this works through DLNA. You can pay extra for remote access service through Netgears Stora webserver, if you have the extra bucks. It's 1TB that will hold over 200 DVDs with a second optional drive for RAID1 backup. Easy to setup. This has an USB(2.0) to attach portable storage of choice. Small quiet box well ventilated by a large fan, easily placed out of sight. Of course, in a quiet room you can hear the popcorn popping. Disks are easy to swap in and out. Formats the 1st drive as NTFS.

Cons: Don't expect this device to be more than a good DLNA server anything more is reaching beyond it's limits. Onlt one disk available for data. The second optioal disk must be used in a RAID1 configuration. The 2nd disk cannot be swapped with the 1st disk because it is formatted in Netgears own format( go figure!) structure. You have to reformat the disk if you wish to use it in other PCs. The front access panel would fall off in my hand when handled. Its held on by four corner friction clips that slip easily if holding it at the bottom. When playing a video, if a moderate demand is made for it's data from other sources this server will begin to have data delays and choppy video output. It's slow under a lot of demand. I wouldn't recommend this device for a large family with many rooms of TVs and PCs. This is why I give it three(3) stars as a server. BUT FIVE(5) STARS FOR A LITTLE DNLA SERVER.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you configure your router for Qos (Quality of service) settings for it's net address. A little research into your router config will sometimes help performance.

I bought two(2) of these because I only wanted the DNLA protocal function. Plus, we're a small family. If you want mobile access to your files, I'd spend the $20 for the yearly web-service subscription.
