2 out of 5 eggsDon't delay testing it.

Pros: Compact

Cons: Bought unit during a sale, didn't get around to touching it until 2+ months later. Unit failed to boot, try resetting, tried new drives, tried old drives without partitions, but it just wouldn't go to boot menu. It just gave me a blank cursor on the LCD screen. Spoke with tech support, wasted my time, have you try reset - check, have you try single drive - check, have you try no drive - check, have you try flashing firmware - check. After about an hour tech finally agreed it needed to be RMA'd. If you buy it try it ASAP, otherwise you get a old refurbish unit from Netgear instead of new unit you paid for. I had 2 other NV+ before this, and it'll probably be my last netgear NAS.

Other Thoughts: Netgear is very slow in approving new drives, 4tb drives are no where to be found on the compatibility list.

5 out of 5 eggsLike it a lot

Pros: I've had my Ultra4 for a couple of years and it has given me next to no trouble. iSCSI is very useful. I knewing nothing about NASes and was able to set this up quickly and easily. I'm able to stream HD videos from the Ultra4 to three computers at once without a problem.

Highly recommended for home use.

Cons: It isn't extremely fast when you back it up, but nothing is when you're dealing with 9 TB of data.

Other Thoughts: I first populated it with 2 TB WD green drives (WD20EARS) - but had to patch the drives' firmware with WDidle3.exe. I then populated it with 3 TB Seagate ST3000DM001 drives. Both gave me no problems.

Getting several Windows accounts to work with SMB Shares is a bit of a bother until you establish a Guest account.

I also use a QNAP NAS and it is noticeably faster, but costs more. The QNAP has more options and is therefore substantially more confusing.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent set

Pros: Has a lot of different bits for whatever screws you might need to use. Even has an extension.

Cons: Doesn't grip the bits very tightly. Apply a small amount of pressure, and they sink into the handle. I've been using the extension just so I can use it without the bits being lost in the screwdriver.

Other Thoughts: Due to the hold, I would recommend getting a better one if possible, but the extension does a good job of keeping the bits from falling out, but that also means you don't have the extended reach.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent card

Pros: Seems to be pretty good. Connected to many different signals already without an issue. Haven't had any issues with a flicker like I did the one I originally had in my Toshiba.

Cons: Haven't found any yet. Didn't come with instructions for installation, but considering that the process is different computer to computer, it makes sense. Would have been nice if it came with a driver for it, even just one to get it working until you get a chance to update.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS, stay on recommended HD list

Pros: This NAS seems to work pretty well, but you have to be sure to have Hard drives on their recommended list. I tried to use 4 x 1.5Tb WD Green drives and it took more that a week to resync, pretty poor performance. Actually, I stopped it after 3 days and a half, it was at 47%.

Now, I tested with 2 x Seagate Constellation ES 500Gb drives, those are not on their compatibility list, but they are server graded drives, and it took only one hour to be redundant, so drives matters a lot, avoid Green drives, stay on their list. I bought 2 x 3Tb drives, that are on their list.

Cons: The price, it's high priced compared to others, but then again, maybe it's a better product, we'll see, so far, runs good. At 350$ that would have been a good price, but 550$ is the price of an ok laptop!

The admin interface could have been better designed, but that's more a personnal choice, I can't remove an egg for that.

Other Thoughts: I'm satisfied, I would have preferred a better performance for my WD Green drives (now I have 4 x 1,5Tb Green drives on the shelf...) and the price was high, something around 300$ or 400$ would have been ok, 550$ was high a bit, but if it delivers from what they say, it will be okay since I wanted those features.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT

Pros: None, this device will not allow any shares.

Cons: This devices will install and be able to be accessed from my desltop, but I can not create any shares. Tech support is very poor, at least 24 delay between the interchanges between myself and tech support.

Other Thoughts: Look elsewhere, this is not the Desktop NAS you are seeking.

1 out of 5 eggsReadyNas 4-bay

Pros: Worked well for about 18 months.

Cons: Power supply failed. Netgear acknowledged unit was in defective series and sent replacement unit. Replacement was defective! A second replacement was sent and, amazingly, it was defective too (wouldn't even power on). Clearly zero quality control. I gave up. No more Netgear for me.

Other Thoughts: Going to buy Synology 5-bay.

4 out of 5 eggsgood NAS unit

Pros: the software makes it really easy to share pictures. The unit is pretty easy to configure. The unit has been rock solid for me for the last 2 years. Displaying the Ip address on the LCD is a nice touch.

Cons: Pretty expensive for what your getting.(So aren't they all)
I utilized the XRaid. I started with 2 1tb Seagates. I upgraded untill I had four Seagates. So far so good (2.8 Tb from 4 1Tb drives). I then systematically added 2Tb drives to the unit replacing them 1 at a time. When I was done I had 7.4 Tb but could only utilize 2.8 Tb of space. It did recognize them. It didn't adapt to the new capacities. In the end, I loaded 3 1 Tb hard drives into my computer backplane, copied the data from the ReadyNas to the backplane using ethernet. Then reinstalled the 2Tb drives(4 of them) reset the readyNas to factory then resynced the drives. Then copied all the data back. All is well that ends well. Took about three days to complete the data transfer

Other Thoughts: It was recommended to me to buy a DIY kit that has a good built-in Sata Raid. Download the freeware IOS to run it and stuff it full of HDDs. much cheaper better processor.

5 out of 5 eggsReplacment NAS

Pros: Have had a NAS for around 6 years and that one was starting to have problems. Since it was starting to have problems, and was small, I figured I better replace it. I looked at going with FreeNAS and figured I just did not want to deal with the configuration and admin hassle .
Overall this NNAS has been good, fast, and silent.

Cons: It is advertised with having free backup software, the software you get is Memeo 30 day trail. Don't waste your time installing it. If after reading reviews you decide you want it, uninstall and you will get a coupon for a discount.

Other Thoughts: Put 3 2-Gig drives in it, figuring to replacing with 3 gigs in the future. It a while to ready all of them, so don't plan to immediately use it.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor

Pros: Capable of a lot of storage

Cons: Mine just stops responding to the network every day. I have to power cycle it 4 times because I can get it to show up again. It is just not reliable at all.
