5 out of 5 eggsEngineering Question

Pros: Investigating

Cons: Investigating

Other Thoughts: Question: Can the device be set to use RAID1 and serve up a single ISCSI target to a Windows box at the same time or is this an either/or proposition?

1 out of 5 eggsReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus - Avoid Until Bad Firmware Update is Resolved.

Pros: Avoid this unit until issure with Netgear V2.4.20 firmware is resolved. Unit came UPS in original merchandizing box un-sealed. All parts where still in the box. Setup was easy until it automaticially updated the firmware from V2.4.17 to V2.4.20. This disabled the enthernet ports, unit no long boots properly, will not reset to factory defalut, or read USB flash bact to V2.4.17

Cons: Too good to be true, expensive and does not work. It does not earn one egg, but I have to give it that to send our this review.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent NAS

Pros: I bought this to upgrade form a ReadyNAS Duo for my Squeezebox music system and was pleasantly surprised. The extra processing horsepower was immediately noticed and appreciated form that of the base Duo model.

Cons: Cost

4 out of 5 eggsGood start to network storage

Pros: Fairly simple setup.
Had NAS attached to network and backing up files within an hour.

Cons: Intermediate knowledge is needed for complete setup of all the Ready NAS capabilities, or a good deal of time will need to be set aside.

Other Thoughts: Will edit later after longer period of use.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent setup, great specs, low price

Pros: - Easy to setup (once you're connected--see other thoughts)
- Quiet
- Great features for price
- Looks to have decent support (as well as community support)

Cons: - No status LCD so unless you're connected via the admin web tool, you have no idea what the status of the NAS is
- Somewhat less features than competitors (eg: no eSata connectivity)

Other Thoughts: Newegg shipped this without double boxing. This happened to me years ago when I bought a Thecus N5200 Pro, but I assumed they changed this practice by now as I see lot's of complaints about this. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. Unit came in decent shape though. Box isn't sealed so someone could have tampered with it although tie wraps and plastic wrap look untouched. Drive needed a factory reset however before I could use it, which is suspicious, but it works fine.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: I received this the day after I ordered it via standard shipping

Cons: 1. The unit was not packed with an outer box and so the unit's box which was left on my doorstep could have been opened (since there wasn't an outer seal) and the top flap looked like it'd been open before.
2. One of the twist ties seemed like it was taken off and put back on, but since the unit itself was in a bag which seemed to be sealed, I decided to take a chance with it.
3. Per the instructions, I installed a SATA drive, which I had currently hooked up to my Asus RT-N56U router (also from Newegg), then plugged the ethernet cables, the power cord and installed the software on my PC.
4. Ran the Raidar, and the software could not detect the ReadyNas. Raidar outlined steps to remedying, power on, connect to the network, and firewall off.
5. I checked the DHCP leases on the Asus router and could not find the ReadyNas.
6. Rebooted the device, plugged into alternate ethernet port, switched a different HD, nothing.
7. Newegg now charges for return shipping for defective produc

Other Thoughts: I think if a product is defective, then Newegg should cover the return shipping. It is out of the customer's control that an item is defective, but the risk it being placed with the customer. If Newegg sees that certain products are returned often, they can work with the manufacturer. The customer does not have this information or the resources at this macro level. There's no point in purchasing products from a store that does not protect the customer, especially a $380 device with a now additional $19 shipping fee to return.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid NAS

Pros: Nice well engineered device. Works as advertised in my mixed platform environment. Install and config was a breeze. I was concerned about noise however this device is quiet.

Cons: none yet

4 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: This is a really nice NAS. Nice build quality.

Cons: The only downside I've seen is with the dlna server. One of the main reasons I purchased this NAS was to store my music on the NAS and use dlna to play it on a Yamaha internet ready receiver.

When playing your ripped CDs the NAS DLNA delivers the songs in alphabetical order rather than by track number.

My work around was to setup iSCSI access to the NAS and let my Windows 7 PC handle the media sharing. Works great.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent NAS

Pros: This NAS drive is easy to setup and fast. I get between 40mb/sec to 70mb/sec access speed. This is the 1st RAID driver I've had and I love it!! I use it for backup using TimeMachine and also to store backups of VMWare images which can get fairly large.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I'm ready to buy another one to connect them together. I bought 4 2T drives and tested the hot swap to make sure all my drives worked properly. The hot swap works great!!

5 out of 5 eggsgreat NAS

Pros: Very fast. got 100m read, 4-50m write for Seagate green 2t * 2 (raid 0)

add-ons. software is easy to use. Supports everything I need for HD streaming and remote access.

One needs gigabit router, decent lan cable (cat5e or more - I attached cat7) , gigabit lan card.

add-ons are good but not plenty. airvideo server plugin was extremely useful for me. It can convert 450p immediately but takes little while for 720p. (other NAS at similar price range can't even transcode 720p or takes forever)

Cons: Poor iPhone apps compared to Synology. I purchased 'file connect' from app store as a substitute (and it's much better than Netgear's one)
