5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: Good price. Good performance. Reliable. Great construction.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Bought this unit in 2011 and ordered 4 WD 3TB drives only to find they were incompatible. Ordered 4 Seagate 2TB Barracuda drives and installed. Unit has performed flawlessly since install - no drive errors and no failures. I would definitely buy it again.

5 out of 5 eggsI've had this unit for several months

Pros: Using in a business environment and so far no issues. Unit is quiet, easy to install and update, works like advertised and expected.

Cons: No cons yet that I can find in the last couple of months of ownership.

2 out of 5 eggsShort Tech Support Window & Spontaneous Shutdowns are a small concern

Pros: Decent price, excellent features. I love the speed. Built in DLNA took some effort to figure out but seems to be working now.

Cons: First Off - If you are selling a "Pro" item you should support your product. During the first few months I had some issues and was able to get through to tech support. It is no longer supported directly by Netgear unless you pay a fee. Shame! I think the manufacturer should use the knowledge they gain from the folks in the trenches to figure out how to engineer around those problems.

I'm also having spontaneous shutdowns. Not sure why. It works most of the time and when it stops working there are no errors or other that would signify the problem. ie) it does not send an email, or blink anything on the front of the device. It just stops responding to explorer or RAIDar. A restart gets it running again.

Other Thoughts: See "cons" listed above.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Machine

Pros: Rock Solid. No problems with X-Raid array with disks that are not on the recommended list. I have 4x 2Tb drives in xraid. WD Caviar Green WD20EARX-00PASB0. Basically a RAID 5 I believe. On a Win2008 Small Business Server network. Using the iSCSI function and it is really smooth (after a bit of a learning curve).

Cons: It took a little bit to figure out how to use iSCSI, and that I really needed to have each LUN only accessible from one server (corruption was happening before I figured this out). I have 3 LUNs now, and two servers connecting, but the LUNs are set so that only one server can connect to it and no other machine.

Other Thoughts: Have not had any disk fail yet, so I cannot say how it would handle recovery.
Speed seems good, but I am not running programs or databases off the machine, just using it for a backup solution.

5 out of 5 eggshappy owner, great NAS!

Pros: nice build quality, rock solid stability, quiet operation, setup software is fairly straight-forward

Cons: does not support additional drive enclosures

Other Thoughts: Bought this in 02/2012 and it's been running 24/7 for over 2 months, zero downtime. Using it mainly as a file server and backup target, future plans will include using it as iSCSI target for my VMware test lab. It's very quiet (paired with 4 Seagate 5900RPM drives) and the build quality is better than the Synology 411+ which I looked at before buying the ReadyNAS.

This lacks the ability to add an enclosure for more disk capacity which the Synology offers, but I like the dual GigE ports and the beefier power supply on the ReadyNAS compared to the 411+ which has an anemic power supply. Already thinking about either getting an identical 4-bay unit or upgrading to a 6 day unit (if only the latter wasn't nearly twice the price of the 4-bay).

One last word, make sure your buy the Pro version, not the Ultra which is cheaper but which lacks certain features.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat server for small office

Pros: This has been a great server for our office. It's a stable, low-maintenance device. The backup features work well, both over LAN and WAN connections, particularly the RSYNC support. The dual-WAN ports have several teaming and failover options, to support both managed and unmanaged switches.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have owned and deployed several ReadyNAS devices and I have found them to be reliable. If you're considering this device, check out Western Digital RE series drives. They're more expensive but they have features to mitigate vibrations that occur in multiple disk setups. As file servers these ReadyNAS devices are much less time consuming to administer than Micro$oft servers.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This product is solid. I been using it for almost one year, for home movies, and also a development environment for Oracle VM running Oracle e-Business Suites. Netgear's support has been very good.

Cons: I'm cheap, always like things to cost less.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Device

Pros: I had to write this review in response to the ONE bad review. I am an IT consultant in my area and we have deployed over 30 of the ReadyNAS series (starting with the NVX up through the rack mount series) over the past 3 years and they have been nothing but stellar. We run VMs off of them, run apps off them, do off-site backups, etc. and they have no disaapointed. On top of this, thier support has beren great, and the support staff has been very knowledgeable. I run one of these in my house and we try to get our SMB customers to delpoy these during any upgrade, espicailly if the customer is virtualized. They typically perform in the 90-100 megabytes per second range (thats NOT megabits) when used on a GB switch and aggregated using LACP. They fully integrate with Active Directory as well. The app store for these units is very useful, and most of the apps are free. I have compared this unit against other entery level units, such as QNAP, and the Netgear wins hands-down.

Cons: The latest firmware revs have had some minor SMB problems with Windows 7. At the moment, users running Windows 7 cannot reliably synchronize offline files to the NAS, but Win XP is just fine. This is more a Linux Windows 7 issue than a netgear issue. CIFS permissions can sometimes give problems since Linux and Windows use different permission structures, but if you read carefully the How-Tos on the ReadyNAS website you should be fine.

Other Thoughts: We have extensively reviewed these units, and for small companies not wanting to invest thousands in SANs, they are the way to go. I have customers running over 10 VMs off these and they can handle the load. I am running Citrix and VMWARE off these units without problem. They are also great as media streamers for a home network, and the Orb plugin works great if you own an Apple device and have a relatively fast internet connection for upstream. This is the BEST and fastest NAS that Newegg carries without going to a 10 GBe, fiber, or SAN product.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid NetGear and this product!

Pros: Initial installation was perfect. Then somewhere down the road I could not run the NetGear utilities and am still unable to resolve this issue.

Cons: NetGear's support is the worst I have ever encountered.
I was willing to pay for support to resolve my issue. However, since I purchased this particular product and did not fully populate it with drives, the support team refused to assist me after spending almost 1 hour on the phone answering ridiculous questions and being pitched to purchase longer support contracts.

The money is not the issue here. The refusal to help me is. I'm sure whatever my issue is can be resolved by a competent support person. And I was happy to pay for it. But after being passed around to multiple techs whose English was poor, phone connection faint, and I was put on hold for at least 50% of my conversation.

I thought I bought a premium product. So now NetGear has my money and I have a dead end product. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU STEER CLEAR OF THIS PRODUCT AND NETGEAR IN GENERAL.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry that you have run into some issues with our ReadyNas product. Would you happen to have a case ID number, so I can get this further escalated? Please email me at

Thank you,
Netgear Team
